3. Introduction
\===================/

Welcome to my FAQ on Ford MUSTANG: The Legend Lives. This is my first FAQ for
a driving/racing game, my third for the Playstation 2, and my fifth FAQ in
general. I've been out of the FAQ writing game for quite some time AGAIN since
I go to both school and work full time. So I figured I'd get my feet wet again
by writing an FAQ for this game. So let's get started.

/===============\

5. Getting Started
\======================/

To get started in Ford MUSTANG, press the Start Button and create a New Profile
or pick up where you left off with Load Profile. If you create a New Profile,
use the X button to confirm letters and select done to move on. If you wish to
Load Profile, select a name that comes up from the list and press the X button.
Also note that this game comes with an AutoSave feature.

The Main Menu is then displayed and you can choose from three options:
Single Player (which holds the Career, Arcade, and Challenge Modes),
Multiplayer (which holds the Quick Race and Catch UP Race Modes), and Options.
Each Game Mode is broken down into more detail under it's respected section.
To jump ahead, use CTRL-F and search for Career, Arcade, Challenge, and
Multiplayer.

/=========================\
6. Driving With Style
\=========================/

In Ford MUSTANG, performing different techniques gets you "Style Points".
These Style Points are awarded for every successful technique you execute over
the course of the game. It is also an important factor in you obtaining locked
Mustangs. The more Style Points you earn through racing, the more Mustangs
you obtain.

"But how do I earn Style Points?" you might ask. Braking, sliding your car,
and the way you enter and exit turns all count towards how you obtain Style
Points. Below is a list of the types of techniques that help you get Style
Points. Be aware that if you are racking up points and hit something (a wall,
a car, etc.), any points you were racking up will be lost.

- Power Slide: Swing the back of the car out by tapping the gas while entering
 or in a turn.

- E-Brake Drift: Swing the back of the car out using the emergency brake while
 entering a turn.

- Braking Drift: Swing the back of the car out using the regular brake while
 entering a turn.

- Jump Drift: Swing the back of the car out by using a curb to throw traction
 off some of the wheels.

- Kansei Drift: Enter a corner at full speed and ease off the gas.

- Feint: Turn the car one way and suddenly turn the other. Breaks traction off
 some of the wheels.

- Swaying: Long drifting motions that goes from one side and then the other.

- Big Air: Get airborne by gaining speed and hitting a hill.

- Two Wheels: Have the car on two wheels.

- Drafting: Use the slipstream of another car to gain speed and pass them.

- Near Miss: Zoom pass a car without hitting it.

- Lap Leader: Be in first place at the end of a lap.

- Place Gain: Pass one of your opponents and take his position.

- Clean Lap: Complete a lap with no major crashes.

The best way to rack up points is to combine multiple techniques and execute
them for long periods of time. The longer you execute certain techniques, the
more Style Points you can earn (mainly seen with Power Slide and Braking Drift)
. Some techniques are "locked in", meaning that the points you earn are
constant. Drafting, Near Miss, Lap Leader, Place Gain, and Clean Lap are
locked in Style Point Techniques and will never change.

/=====================\
7. The Game Modes
\=====================/

As stated earlier, the Game Modes are found both Single Player (which consists
of Career Mode, Arcade Mode, and Challenge Mode) and Multiplayer (which
consists of Quick Race and Catch Up Race). Each mode is broken down below.

*-----------------*
7A. Career Mode
*-----------------*

Career Mode. Ever racing game has one. It is in this mode where you
accumulate points to move on to bigger races. It is one of two areas where you
will be spending most of your time since some of the Mustangs can only be
unlocked in Career Mode. Race in seven different cities on different routes
to become Number 1 on each track.

*------------*
7B. Arcade
*------------*

Arcade Mode is where you go for immediate action. Choose from Quick Race,
Time Attack, or Eliminator. Quick Race is where you go to race on tracks you
unlocked in Career Mode. Time Attack is where you are in a race against time
to reach checkpoints and move on to other races. Eliminator is where you are
racing against 3 computer controlled cars and for each car that comes in last,
it is eliminated from the race.

*--------------------*
7C. Challenge Mode
*--------------------*

Challenge Mode is where you will spend most of your time. It is one of the two
areas where you will be spending your time since some of the Mustangs can only
be unlocked in Challenge Mode. It consists of 2 Events: Time Trial and Slalom.
In Time Trial, you are placed in a pre-selected car and must complete three
laps in a certain timeframe. In Slalom, you are placed in a pre-selected car
and must navigate a series of gates. You must achieve a Gate Goal in order
to move on to the next Slalom. Pass through the gates to achieve the Gate Goal
. If you fail to collect the required number of gates in the allotted
timeframe, you must start all over.

*-----------------*
7D. Multiplayer
*-----------------*

Multiplayer is the mode where you can race against a friend. The two modes
here are Quick Race and Catch Up Race. The Quick Race in Multiplayer is the
same as the Quick Race in Single Player. Catch Up Race is a race where you
must try and outdistance your opponent by 100 meters for 10 seconds. One
player is given a head start and for each time one player cannot close the
gap on their opponent and 10 seconds expires, the driver in the lead gets a
point and switches positions with the opponent who lost. The losing player
then gets a head start and the challenge continues. The first to 10 points
wins.

/=================================\
8. Challenge Mode Walkthrough
\=================================/

Here is the area in which I will break down what you have to do to successfully
complete Challenge Mode. This guide assumes you have just started a new
profile and are following this guide in order. If you are not, please use
CTRL-F to move on to a section listed below.

*------------*
8A. Slalom
*------------*

There are 6 Slalom sections each consisting of 3 parts: Easy, Medium, and Hard.
The higher the difficulty, the higher the Gate Goal needed to continue.
Remember that time is against you in the Slalom Challenges and you will see
that time can quickly disappear as you attempt to pass through more and more
gates so pay attention. Also, if you miss too many gates or fail to cross the
finish line after reaching the Gate Goal, the game will automatically end the
Slalom and you will have to start over. Note: your HUD should be on at all
times from here on out...you'll need it.

++++++++++++++++++++++++
Slalom 1. Long Beach
++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mustang => '70 Boss 302
Track Route => Standard
Length => 1.50 Miles
Easy Difficulty => 50/66 Gates
Medium Difficulty => 55/66 Gates
Hard Difficulty => 60/66 Gates
Record => 00:37:37
Overall Slalom Difficulty => 2/5

Track Overiew:
"Welcome to Long Beach California. This custom built circuit was designed to
push the Mustang to it's limits...and beyond. Get ready for the race of your
life."

Long Beach is a pretty simple track consisting of few turns. You can literally
push the Mustang to high speeds and clear the gates with little or no
difficulty. As the difficulty increases, you might want to slow up a little
bit coming out of turns, since some of the gates that are crucial for you to
pass the Gate Goals appear at the entrance and exit of the turns. Furthermore,
your room for error drops dramatically once you reach the Hard difficulty.

+++++++++++++++++++++
Slalom 2. Chicago
+++++++++++++++++++++

Mustang => '02 SVT 10th Anniv. Cobra
Track Route => Standard
Length => 1.50 Miles
Easy Difficulty => 66/87 Gates
Medium Difficulty => 73/87 Gates
Hard Difficulty => 80/87 Gates
Record => 00:55:39
Overall Slalom Difficulty => 3/5

Track Overview:
"Welcome to Chicago, racing in the heart of the Windy City. With it's long
straights and tight corners, this is a big challenge in a big city."

Chicago is your first real challenge in the Slalom challenges. With the
Mustang getting up to very high speeds, it is hard to navigate the corners and
clear the gates. However, the higher the difficulty gets, the more on point
with your driving you are going to have to be. Your best bet in Chicago is to
pratcically go through every gate on the first 2 laps of each difficulty and
take it easy on the last one. Room for error drops big time on Hard, so pay
attention.

+++++++++++++++++++
Slalom 3. Miami
+++++++++++++++++++

Mustang => '87 LX Coupe 5.0L
Track Route => Standard
Length => 1.50 Miles
Easy Difficulty => 85/114 Gates
Medium Difficulty => 95/114 Gates
Hard Difficulty => 100/114 Gates
Record => 01:08:01
Overall Slalom Difficulty => 4/5

Track Overview:
"So welcome to Miami Beach and high speed racing in the Florida sun.
You'll be racing around short hairpins and long, sweeping straights.
THIS is life in the fastlane."

Miami presents a great challenge for you. You are racing to clear gates in a
pretty bad Mustang. The speed isn't the greatest nor is the handling. The
circuit itself is a beast because you can get the Mustang up quickly and miss
gates in bunches. Although the room for error is a little more lenient than
your previous 2 tracks (14 gates, more than the room for error of Chicago and
Long Beach COMBINED on the Hard Difficulty which is 13), your key concern in
Miami will be the time. My advice to you on the Hard Difficulty is to reach
the Gate Goal as quickly as possible and ignore the remaining gates. Doing
this will put more emphasis on you cutting corners and beating the clock than
it is solidifying the gates.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++
Slalom 4. New Orleans
+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mustang => '05 GT Coupe
Track Route => Standard
Length => 1.50 Miles
Easy Difficulty => 110/144 Gates
Medium Difficulty => 120/144 Gates
Hard Difficulty => 130/144 Gates
Record => 00:56:09
Overall Slalom Difficulty => 3/5

Track Overview:
"Time to visit New Orleans for some serious racing. And you can expect high
speed action all the way in the Mardi Gras city. It's a warm, humid night, so
get ready for some hot racing action."

While New Orleans does not present a huge challenge as Miami, the problem is
the location of most of the gates. New Orleans is bright and flashy and turns
come suddenly. Luckily, the room for error is a bit lenient (14 gates on the
hardest difficulty). Watch the turns and use ease off of the gas, and you
should be fine.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Slalom 5. New York City
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mustang => '68 428 Cobra Jet
Track Route => Standard
Length => 1.50 Miles
Easy Difficulty => 80/105
Medium Difficulty => 85/105
Hard Difficulty => 98/105
Record => 00:55:17
Overall Slalom Difficulty => 2/5

Track Overview:
"Welcome to New York, racing past Central Park and along Broadway. The circuit
is fast with tight 90 degree turns and fast straights. This is one fast paced
city."

New York isn't really a challenge in Slalom Mode. However, the only area of
concern comes around the middle to end of the circuit, where the gates narrow
and are in odd locations. The turns come quickly and the gates are out there
if you exit a turn wrong. You'll be sure to rack up some Style Points in NYC
due to the turns and don't really worry about the gates. Your room for error
has gotten a bit bigger on the Hard Difficulty (17 gates).

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Slalom 6. San Francisco
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mustang => GT-R Concept
Track Route => Standard
Length => 1.50 Miles
Easy Difficulty => 120/158
Medium Difficulty => 135/158
Hard Difficulty => 150/158
Record => 00:57:39
Overall Slalom Difficulty => 5/5

Track Overview:
"Welcome to San Francisco, racing in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Watch for fast straights, downhill racing, and tight corners."

San Francisco is a racer's dream circuit...but of course, you are participating
in a slalom. And to make matters worse, you are in the most powerful Mustang
in the game, the GT-R Concept. This is a blessing and a curse. A blessing
because your car can move any way you want it to in a moment's notice. A curse
because the speed of the car may cost you gates if you don't exit turns
properly. The hills of San Francisco will present a challenge because gates
rest on the hill, so passing through all of them may pose a challenge. You may
even knock over all the gates in a given area due to the speed of the Mustang.
Watch you speed on the straights because the straights quickly become corners
in San Francisco and gatea re in weird locations. Room for error gets tight
again on the Hard Difficulty (8 gates), so near-flawless driving is vital to
success and clearing Slalom Mode.

Congratulations. You have just cleared the Slalom Challenges. On to the Time
Trials.

*----------------*
8B. Time Trial
*----------------*

There are 6 circuits to race on in Time Trial. In order to clear a circuit,
you must beat the time indicated at the beginning of the Time Trial. Your cars
have been pre-determined and can play a huge factor in you either crushing the
Time to Beat or barely getting by. Make sure your HUD is on...

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Time 1. San Francisco (Alternate)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mustang => '68 Mustang GT/CS
Route => Alternate
Time to Beat => 3:10
Length => 2.03 Miles
Record => ? Note: I forgot to make a note on the record time for this circuit
Overall Time Trial Difficulty => 2/5

Although the track overview is the same, some cities have alternate route to
race on. San Francisco is one of them. The main difference here is that there
is a turn taken out that leads right into the monster hill. Use your speed
and Power Slide Technique to rack up huge points and cut some time.

+++++++++++++++++++
Time 2. Chicago
+++++++++++++++++++

Mustang => '04 Mustang GT 40th Anniv.
Route => Standard
Time to Beat => 3:05
Length => 2.29 Miles
Record => 00:55:39
Overall Time Trial Difficulty => 3/5

You've raced enough in Chicago during the Slaloms to know what to look out for.
Watch the turns and try to find some areas where you can take some time off of
your run (maybe those sidewalks will come in handy...).

+++++++++++++++++++++++
Time 3. Los Angeles
+++++++++++++++++++++++

Mustang => '71 Mustang Boss 351
Route => Standard
Time to Beat => 4:10
Length => 2.97 Miles
Record => 01:13:32
Overall Time Trial Difficulty => 5/5

Track Overview:
"Welcome to Los Angeles. You're racingf through Santa Monica and Downtown. So
get ready for high speed curves and long straights. The Los Angeles track is
the California dream made real."

The California track is long and winding. To make matters worse, you are in by
far, one of the worst Mustangs in the game, the '71 Mustang Boss 351. The
handling is terrible and it's hard to get up in this Mustang. Watch the
corners and push it as hard as you can. You will be cutting it very close in
this Time Trial, usually clearing the finish line with barely a second left on
the clock.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Time 4. New York City (Alternate)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Mustang => '03 Mustang Mach 1
Route => Alternate
Time to Beat => 2:10
Length => 1.65 Miles
Record => 00:39:48
Overall Time Trial Difficulty => 5/5

New York City is another circuit that holds an alternate route. This route is
very fast paced. Time is short and the room for error is practically none
existent. Near-flawless driving will be required.

+++++++++++++++++++++++
Time 5. New Orleans
+++++++++++++++++++++++

Mustang => Mustang 6.1L Cobra R Concept
Route => Standard
Time to Beat => 2:57
Length => 2.03 Miles
Record => 00:56:09
Overall Time Trial Difficulty => 4/5

New Orleans is a beast of a track. Fast straights quickly become hard turns
and winding roads. Another course where your room for error is marginal.
Near-flawless execution will be required to move on.

+++++++++++++++++
Time 6. Miami
+++++++++++++++++

Mustang => Mustang GT Coupe Concept
Route => Standard
Time to Beat => 3:25
Length => 2.94 Miles
Record => 01:08:01
Overall Time Trial Difficulty => 3/5

Miami is another fast-paced city. Watch the turns and 90 degree turns and you
should be fine. Lap 3 will pose a threat if you haven't been driving
effectively. Room for error is a bit lenient, but not by much.

Congratulations. You have just cleared Time Trial. On to Career Mode.

/==============================\
9. Career Mode Walkthrough
\==============================/

Career Mode is where you will spend the rest of your time in Single Player Mode.
At this point, you should have unlocked several MUSTANGS. The rest can be
found here in Career Mode. Your Style Points will be accumalated big time in
Career Mode.

In order to advance, you need Position Points. Position Points are earned by
your final placement in each race. 1st Place nets your 500 points, 2nd Place
nets you 250 points, 3rd Place nets you 100 points, and you get no points for
coming in 4th Place. Furthermore, if you finish a race in a position other
than 1st, when you actually do come in 1st, you will receive the remainder of
your points that equal out to 500. So for example:

You finish a race in 3rd Place, thus netting you 100 points. You race the same
race again and finish in 1st Place. You will then receive 400 points, since
you have already earned 100 points for coming in 3rd Place.

In Career Mode, there really isn't a strategy. If you have played other racing
games (mainly Gran Turismo), you will know that the out-in-out strategy,
drafting, and finding the right line (or best driving path for a circuit) are
the only ways to win.

The Out-In-Out Strategy consists of you entering a turn on the outside, going
inside towards the apex of the turn, and exiting the turn on the outside.
Professional race car drivers perform this action flawlessly.

The Drafting Strategy consists of you following closely behind a car that is
front of you. Your speedometer will change color from white to yellow when you
are successfully drafting a vehicle. When you draft another car, you are
driving behind the immediate space of the car in front of you. This immediate
space is better known as the "slipstream". For all cars that are in the
slipstream, wind resistance is lowered dramatically and gaining speed is
guaranteed. When you have enough momentum, break out of the slipstream and
pass your opponent.

Finding the Line consists of you finding the best path to drive on a given
race course. If you have played Gran Turismo 3, you know that there is a
certain path you can follow on a course that will not only cut times on the
course, but give you the best out-in-out points for turns. Try to "see" the
line as you drive on laps 1 and 2 of the circuits.

With that said, here is the breakdown of the tracks in Amateur and Professional
Mode. The tracks change in Professional Mode in terms of direction but the
track overviews remain the same throughout. My personal choice to clear Career
Mode: the Mustang GT Coupe Concept. It's one of the few balanced cars in the
game and probably the most powerful at the time you begin Career Mode.
