"Just as MGS2:S improved MGS, so does MGS3:S"
When I first played MGS3:SE, I found that while the story and gameplay experience were some of the best offered on any console, the camera and extras didn't exactly give the game the push one would expect of such a big release. Thanks to Kojima and his team, they brought out Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.
While the graphics have barely changed (if at all), the graphics hold up exceptionally well even when compared to new releases in 2006. The new camera is great since you don't constantly have to switch to First Person mode just to get a good look at your surroundings. The jungle feels even more alive since the camera puts you right in the action, giving the full feel of being immersed in the game. The framerate is constant, even when online with many people.
Kojima's team went to live jungles to record the ambient sounds in the game, and you can tell they did the best job possible. You can hear all around you with the right setup, and your ears will think you're actually deep in a jungle on a covert mission. The footsteps of the guards, the rustle of the underbrush as you sneak past, all are recreated with stunningly life-like quality. The voice actors also further the immersive quality of the game, with David Hayter giving one of his best performances.
Even though the story is the same as in Snake Eater's, it's still one of the most well-rounded and thought-out stories in a game. While the conversations in the beginning can be long, they are skippable since most of them are there just to inform first-timers of the controls and some of the changes to the changes of the series.
With the advent of the all-new camera system, the gameplay is refined to the best one has seen in a stealth-action game. In the past, gamers were restricted with the overhead camera, as they would have to constantly switch to First Person mode just to see ahead of them. This would lead to unfair alerts and deaths that just didn't seem to fit the Metal Gear name. Now, the new camera allows you to be right in the action without the constant need to switch to First Person mode. Players of the series might have some trouble getting used to the camera at first, but then it becomes second-nature and everything gets settled in.
Taking cues from series such as SOCOM and Splinter Cell, this new MGS comes with the long-awaited Metal Gear Online. Setting up is easy, and finding games is a snap. Lag is usually low if you have a good connection, and there are plenty of players for you to fight against. Maps can vary from intense close fighting to huge urban skirmishes. There are multiple modes of play, which increase replay value substantially.
With Subsistance, there's loads of extra content packed in to this release. There's a demo theater, which lets you view any cutscene you want and you can change Snake's camo and face paint. Peep Show lets you look at EVA in her bikini some more. There are lots more maps for Snake vs Monkey, and they are still challenging as ever. Also included, are the MSX versions of the original two Metal Gear games. These give an important part of backstory to fans, as Metal Gear 2 was never released in the US.
Overall, this is just one of the best games to come out for 2006, even if the core game came out in 2004. This is one of the best times to be a PS2 owners, and people everywhere should give this game a try.
