"A really bad game"
I read some average reviews of this game in EGM. I had never heard of it before but it seemed alright enough. Sometimes those bargain games aren't too shabby. So the game came today. How is it? Read on!
The plot is... You're Ruff Trigger a bounty hunter dog thing. You're sent out to find these new toys called something-pig or whatever. It's a total rip-off of the second Ratchet and Clank game but that's okay. Except the characters are lame, their personalities are even worse and the plot doesn't seem to really go anywhere.
Graphic wise, I can safely say this is the ugliest game I've seen in years. I mean, this is so ugly it makes the launch games look dead sexy. Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh but when you see a cut scene and you can't tell that a character is smoking a cigar because his face is flat and it's a brown thing sticking out of his face. Come on, that's just bad.
The sound in the game is bad. Really bad. The voice work is painful and some of the worst to date. The sound effects seem to be direct rip-offs from Ratchet and Clank. The ammo collect sound is exactly the same. The music... Oh boy. Porn music best describes the music but then that would be putting down porn music.
Can a game do everything wrong? Is it hard to get smooth and simple controls? Yes, it is hard. Square allows you to punch, triangle also seemed to be an attack. X is jump and circle did something that I can't remember. Now to shoot the gun you hold R1 to lock onto the enemy and then hit square to fire. Simple. Now to strafe you need to hold L1 as well. Okay, now for some reason about 50% of the time the camera won't swing with your strafing so you get bad views that bring on hits and then death.
Okay, so the game play is decent right? Wrong. You run from point A to point B. You need to kill the enemies. Either by punching/kicking them or by shooting them. There are jumps and items to destroy. You gain ammo and money. Money is used for ammo and weapons.
You also get experience from guys. It looks like a ying/yang symbol. Leveling up allows you to get more weapons and stuff. The thing is, you level too slowly for this to work so you end up playing stages before you gain a level and get a new weapon or whatever.
You can also change into a werewolf but it's all about close combat with bad hit detection and a long waiting projectile moon attack (ha!). Sadly I'm being serious but you can also jump further by flapping your limbs.....
I'm not sure what else to say. The game is fairly short. That could be a good or bad thing. There are mini games you unlock but I couldn't bring myself to touch them.
Ruff Trigger is by far the worst game I've played in a while. Excluding some of those sports titles. Not only is it a poor man's Ratchet & Clank but it's a badly done poor version. If you really must try it out, well don't because even a rental fee is too much and the game can be bought for 9.99. I'm glad I rented and didn't buy.
