"Did I ever tell you the definition of perfection? This game"
First of all, I'm going to tell you this is the first game from the Far Cry series I have played. I seriously have to say this is my game of the year, a really awesome experience. Want to know why? Read my review.
The story starts off with Jason Brody, the main protagonist from this game, and his friends, enjoying their vacations at Rook Island. They're having a lot of fun together. Everything is so peaceful in the island, so, can anything go wrong? Yes, it can. You're captured by Vaas, a psychopath thats addicted with drugs, and his pirates. You're going to be sold into slavery, so your big brother and you manage to escape from where you're held hostage. Vaas kills your brother, letting you escape. After escaping, a tribe called the Rakyat saves you. Now, Jason must rescue his friends from Vaas and his pirates. Jason at first is an innocent guy, he hasn't killed anybody, and his mind is clean, the circumstances make him change into a mighty warrior, Jason's transformation is what makes the story great. He slowly becomes a killer, as you play you will see him go from being scared to harm anyone, to actually enjoying and having fun as he disposes of his adversaries. Maybe the story can be interpreted as him just rescuing his friends and taking revenge, but it's more than that. It's perfection, in short words.
The Far Cry series is known for having incredibly huge, open worlds. Far Cry 3 is no different. There's a lot of stuff to do in the island, but first I'm going to start with the combat. There are different ways to approach how you play. For example, in the game there are outposts you can take over for having more areas of the map in your control. When you go to take over these outposts, you can do it any way you want, the game is not linear at all. You can go all Rambo, running and gunning from everywhere, not caring about them knowing your position, or you can snipe from far away with a silenced sniper rifle, without them even knowing their partners are dying, or you can go all stealthy like Solid Snake on everyone, sneaking from behind and performing executions, hiding the bodies. The game features a Skill Tree, and as you go unlocking the skills, your character gets more movements and upgrades. From upgrading your accuracy with weapons, to upgrading your life and unlocking different takedowns. The game also features driving, from land vehicles and boats, to wing suits and hand gliders. The driving mechanic is easy, letting you do whatever you want with the vehicle. From running over animals and people, to sticking C4 in the car and driving all the way to an enemy outpost, jumping off the car and detonating the explosive. It never gets boring. The game also features hunting. There's a lot of animals in the island, and all of them have the objective of killing you. Well, almost all of them. You can hunt them down for taking their skin and upgrading your gear, or for selling their precious skin for some dollars. Exploration is highly encouraged for the simple fact without upgrades you won't make it far in the jungle. There are few games that getting all the collectibles is fun, Far Cry 3 is one of them. There are a lot of things you can find, from memory cards, to letters from the lost and relics. For having access to all the map, you need to activate the radio towers, that are scattered all around the island. Getting up the Radio Towers is like trying to solve a puzzle, it can be hard at times, but it's always entertaining. The weapons are also great, there's a great variety of them. From the standard FPS weapons like Assault Rifles, SMGs and Shotguns, to other ones like Crossbows with explosive arrows and flamethrowers. Wreaking havoc with all this weapons is extremely fun, burning the whole jungle never gets boring. There are also side quests, adding a lot to the replay value. Even after you finish the main story there's still a lot of stuff to do. And can you think that I have only talked about Single Player?
Multiplayer felt...generic. The same thing from every FPS, Team Deathmatch and the objective game modes. As you go leveling up, you unlock weapons and attachments for those same weapons. I'm not going to detail in Multiplayer, it was simply not as enjoyable as the Single Player was. The game also features Co-op Missions. In these missions, you can team up with other players, or you can play it split screen with a friend in your house, for completing a side story. This side story is linear. What do I mean? It's not free roam like Single Player is. You just go forward, killing everything in your sight. Both Multiplayer and Co-op are nice additions to the game, letting you have other stuff to do apart from the main story. The gameplay is perfect, the fun never ends in Far Cry 3, period.
Far Cry 3 has some of the most amazing graphics for the current generation. The island is perfectly detailed, from the amazing ocean, to the grass and trees. Character models are top notch, the weapons look beautiful and realistic, not like other games where they look like toys. Overall, the graphics are beautiful and one of the best for this generation.
The sound and music in Far Cry 3 is equally as good and perfect as the graphics. The soundtrack gets you immersed into the action, it's not like the soundtrack of the Pokemon games that at times I find myself whistling, but the music is very enjoyable. The in-game sounds are also amazing. The gunshots, the engine from the vehicles, the explosions, everything sounds realistic. The voice acting is great, they all did an incredible work in this. The sounds and the visuals are some of the best this current generation has, no doubt at all.
The Replay Value in Far Cry 3 is very high. The Main Story Mode is kind of long, and even after you finish the main story, there's a lot to do. There's the side quests, there are a lot of collectibles to find, from all the 120 relics, to the letters of the lost. If you already finished all the outposts, you can reset them for taking them all again with your own style. You can go hunting, or drive all around the island. There's nothing you can't do in the world of Far Cry 3. And if you're not the type of person that likes to play Single Player a lot, you can jump to Multiplayer for some action, or you can play the Co-op mission with randoms or with your friends. Fun never ends in Far Cry 3.
Replay Value: 10/10
Buy, Rent, or Pass?
Definitively, it's a buy. It doesn't matter if you're a Far Cry fan or not. Enjoying this game is very easy, the story is awesome, the gameplay is perfection, there is so much to do. This game is a true masterpiece, and a must have for anyone that has a PS3. This is seriously my Game of the Year, it truly deserved that award. Overall, it's a perfect game.
