XCOM: Enemy Unknown was released on 9 October 2012 for Windows, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. It was developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2k Games. Slingshot is the first of two planned DLC packs (second of three if you count the pre-order Elite Soldiers costume pack). Slingshot was released on 4 December 2012 and costs $6.99 or 560 Microsoft Points, depending on your platform.
Slingshot adds three linked Council Missions and a new recruit with a unique facial model and voice. These new missions take the place of the normally randomized Council Missions offered in a normal playthrough. You cannot access these missions on a file created before you download the pack.
Once you have downloaded and installed the add-on, when you start a new game your first Council Mission will come with the option to engage in the first of the Slingshot missions or to receive random missions. Selecting the Slingshot option will send you to the Friends in Low Places mission.
A member of the Triad criminal organization has reached out to one of our contacts. Although we have little interest in the man himself, he allegedly has in his possession a piece of "unique" technology. We'll need you to investigate; we will transmit further details to Central.
Friends in Low Places
- If the contact's device is genuine, as we suspect it is, it'll be of high value. Stay sharp as the aliens may make an effort to recover it.

Your squad will begin the mission with Zhang in a graveyard. You need to escort Zhang to the pick-up point on the opposite end of the map. Zhang has very low defense, so keep him behind cover at all times. Especially be mindful of the Thin Man units who will try to poison him.
Slowly move your squad through the graveyard, using the stone monuments and tombstones as cover. Make liberal use of Overwatch as many enemy units will spawn between each of your turns. Taking out the Thin Man units with Snipers is ideal to prevent them from exploding on your units when they die.
You need to kill all enemy units before the mission will end, so don't rush Zhang forward and hope to end on the pick-up point while enemies are still active. Take it slow and kill them as you move forward. Once they are all down, move Zhang to the pick-up point to complete the mission.
Upon successful completion of this mission, Shaojie Zhang will join your forces. He is a Heavy-class soldier who begins at the lieutenant rank. At the early stage in the game when you receive him, he will likely be one of your most powerful soldiers.
- A battleship is closing on the city. The squad must place the transponders in time to divert the attack. Aliens will likely deploy scouts to seek out any human resistance. Enemy contact likely.

You have ten turns to complete this mission. There is also an achievement for doing it in six turns or less. Depending on the difficulty setting, this is either really easy or moderately challenging. The basic strategy remains the same regardless.
All of the transponders are inside the train. A unit must either begin a movement phase next to one or end their first movement phase next to one of the transponders in order to activate it. An action button will appear when you do to activate it. This does not take an action, so do not worry about being caught unable to act by activating one of the transponders.
Begin by sending one of your Support-class units into the train, preferably one with the movement increase perk. There can be a Thin Man hiding inside, so be prepared for that. Next you want to send two units on top of the train, preferably a Heavy and a Sniper, although any mix of the two will work. These units will be responding to the aliens that spawn every turn around the train. The rest of your squad can be spread through the cover provided by the train.
The aliens that spawn each turn include Mutons and Thin Man units. They will all automatically go into Overwatch upon spawning. Your units on top of the train should not only be able to hit these aliens, but they should have a significant terrain advantage being high up. Blast them from this vantage point and then clean up any of the remaining aliens with your forces below.
Your forward Support unit should be moving through the train and activating the transponders. Do not move this unit until you clean up any aliens that spawn each turn to prevent it from getting hit by an Overwatch. Keeping this unit alive and moving is critical to nabbing the achievement.
Once you activate all six transponders, you need to move a unit to the control panel at the front of the train. The same rules apply to this panel as the transponders, so you need to end a first movement phase at the panel. Plan for this with your last transponder as you will need to position the Support who activates it to the fore of the transponder in order to make it to the console on the same turn.
Once you activate the console, the train will move out of the station and through the city. This will broadcast the disruption needed to prevent the battleship from bombarding the city.
- The battleship is crippled, but still active, and the aliens aboard won't be happy to see us. Expect maximum resistance.

- Destroying or disabling power conduits will enable us to bring down the battleship without damaging it.

Your third Council Mission will finally allow you to seize the battleship and all the technology aboard. This will likely give you a huge boost in parts and research at this point in the game, so look forward to that.
The battleship is divided into sections that can be approached linearally. The ship has two main passages down either side, with smaller alcoves and a depressed middle area spread about. Alien units, as one might expect, will be found hiding in this alcoves or in the center.
Split your squad in two, sending half the units down one side and half down the other. Take it slow in each room initially as the aliens can be hiding in a couple of different spots. Once you spot the aliens in a room take them out from cover before moving to the next. Be sure to group up before entering each new room and never end a second movement phase going through a door to avoid alerting a new pack of aliens to your prescence.
The power supplies are your primary objective. These can be disbaled by having a unit either begin a movement phase next to one or end their first movement phase next to one of them. Alternately, you can also destroy them with rockets or grenades. I got six of each UFO item at the end of the mission regardless of which way I took them out.
Once you take out the power sources and kill all the alien hositles present, Central will inform you that the battleship can be brought safely down. It's been reported that you will always get six intact UFO power sources, flight computers, and fusion cores. Finishing this mission will also return you to the normal tract for random Council Missions.
New Friend - Complete Friends in Low Places (10 Gamescore / Bronze Trophy). Completing the first mission of the pack will unlock this achievement.
Bait the Hook - Complete Confounding Light (10 Gamerscore / Bronze Trophy). Completing the second misson of the pack will unlock this achievement.
The Bigger They Are - Complete Gangplank (20 Gamerscore / Silver Trophy). Completing the third mission of the pack will unlock this achievement.
Rising Dragon - Take your new ally into the final challenge (30 Gamerscore / Gold Trophy). To get this achievement you need to bring Shaojie Zhang with you when you assault the Temple Ship at the end of the game. Simply having him in your squad when the mission starts will unlock this achievement.
All Aboard - Complete Confounding Light with more than 3 turns left on the timer (30 Gamerscore / Silver Trophy). To get this achievement you need to end the mission with 4 turns or more on the timer. How to accomplish this is detailed above in the walkthrough section.
