I have a 40GB and i was wondering if there is absolutely ANY WAY that you can make the 40GB backwards compatible? like hooking up a PS2 to the PS3 or something? my PS2 motor wont spin all the time so I'm frustrated when i cant play my PS2 games.

There is no way to make a 40GB PS3 play PS2 games.

There is no definite way to play PS2 games on the 40 GB ps3 model right now. There is rumor that a new backward compatibility update will be out to allow all models to play PS2 games.
