The original 20, 60 and early 80gig systems were backwards compatible. The slims are NOT backwards compatible.
Some people will talk about some sort of "downloadable BC" being in the PSN store. While there is a download for some compatibility, it has nothing to do with making a system backwards compatible. What the download does is let systems that already had BC to allow games that required an installation to the HDD to work correctly. Games such as FFXI and......I don't know what else. It's not a cure all download to enable your system to play PS2 games.
If you care enough to want to play PS2 games, then buy a PS2. They're cheap, and used ones are cheaper.

The "PS2" data download I think only appears if you have one of the older models as I have the 120gb Slim model and can't find the update anywhere within the PS Store.

PS1 Games mostly work but as for PS2 games you can forget it if you have a newer model 80gb or a 120, 160 or 250gb PS3.

As Brave Fencer Delano has already said it's a lot quicker and easier to just buy a PS2.
