Does PS3 play avi files?

I have seen at a few different places that the PS3 plays avi files, but then other places only say mp4 etc. I was wondering which is the case, and also how to play them. Can you play from a CD, or can you copy an avi file from CD to the hard drive without linux and play it?

* Memory Stick Video Format
* - MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
* - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
* - MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
* MP4 file format
* - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
* MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
* MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
* MPEG-2 TS(MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AC3(Dolby Digital), AAC LC)
* MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
* AVI
* - Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
* - Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
* AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)
* DivX
* WMV
* - VC-1(WMA Standard V2)

but just because it says AVI doesn't mean it will play them, AVI is a container, and the PS3 will only play certain codecs held within the container. Hope that makes sense

You can copy the files over to the PS3 on a USB device

But if they wont play you could burn them to a disk (not a data disk but as a video disk like an actual DVD) and then play them, at a guess ones that don't play should play on a disk, haven't tried that though
