Question from Luiman04
Is this game worth buying? I've heard some people say they dislike this game, but others say it's really good. Is this game worth buying or renting/borrowing from a friend?
A lot of people complain that it's "Linear" and well... it is. But to all the nay-sayers I reply with this: It's an RPG, a Final Fantasy RPG. You can't deviate from the story. All RPG's are linear. There's absolutely no way to change the story. In order to progress in the game you will always have to travel to a specific point in a specific direction. All RPGs do this, with or without a world map.
And some people would reply saying "But there are no towns to explore! No free roaming!" Well, that is incorporated into the story. Not to spoil anything, but your team is a bunch of outcasts and it would be pretty weird if a bunch of outcasts were allowed to just wander around any town they wanted to without causing any trouble.
I thought it was a fantastic game, certainly one of my favorites. The battle system is incredible. Sure there can be a lot of grinding to level up, but if you know where to go it won't take that long, and the battle system keeps it interesting. I never got bored grinding for Exp. And yes, the first 10 chapters (out of 13) can be frustrating. But the game's story is broken up into 13 chapters, not the game play. I'd say about half the game (if not less) is in the first 10 chapters. And the 2nd half of the game (actual game-play-time, not story-related) is in chapters 11-13. You'll breeze through the first 8 chapters and then things start to get really good. It probably took me about 20 hours to get through chapter 10, and then another 30-40 to actually finish. and then another 40ish to complete extras in the post-game.
If you're still unsure, borrow it. But give it a good 10 hours before you decide. A lot of people threw their controller down after 20 minutes and never even gave it a chance. I thought it was a remarkable game.

The game gets better as you go on, and the combat system can be a lot of fun once you get used to it. I think it's one of the weaker Final Fantasy games, but I still managed to put almost 100 hours in to get the platinum trophy. Rent it or borrow it, but the game hits a high point at chapter 11 (which is probably about halfway or 2/3 through the game).
