contribution is worth the efford, I will update this guide

I've been a Virtua Tennis fan for some years now.So, when a friend told me
that the third game of this franchise was on sale, I rushed to the nearest
store to buy it... and I didn't regret it! To tell the truth, I liked the
original Top spin game a lot more than Virtua tennis 2, but Top Spin 2 was a
big disappointment! I was curious about the new Virtua Tennis 3. Would it be a
step back - like Top Spin 2 - or would it be, once again, the funniest tennis
game on the market? Luckily, it was the second option.
That's why it feels strange not to find any walkthrough while surfing the web.
And that's why I'm writing this FAQ, hopefuly helping or guiding someone on
having the most fun (and less frustration) playing the game.

This was supposed to be a King & Duke's guide, but since it was
'overspecialized', I decided to extend it to a full game FAQ. I'm sure that
this way it will help a lot more people.

III. Notes and Miscellaneous Information
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The first thing you need to understand is that it will take a lot of
playing time (many hours) to master the game. Never forget that practice
    makes perfect!
- I will assume that you have played the game for some hours and you have
built your player's stats - in case you are on World Tour Mode
- I am an average player. So, if you are at least an average VT3 player, you
should have no problem beating King and Duke using my tips
- There may be other ways to beat King, Duke and all other pleyrs. If you
would like to share your own methods, just e-mail me
- My custom player is an All-Around player
- This guide is final! Anyway, if you want to add something, my e-mail box
won't mind to receive your own suggestions and information. Of course you
will be credited for everything you help to add to this FAQ
- I think this guide could help in some way. If not for anything else, it is
one of the few guides for VT3 that are available online

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IV. Building Your Custom Player
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Depending on the stats you work first in the World Tour mode, you can have the
following types of player:

- Various Shots: Serve - 30; Footwork - 30; Groundstrokes - 30; Volley - 30
- Hard Hitter: Serve - 27; Footwork - 29; Groundstrokes - 35; Volley - 29
- Big Server: Serve - 33; Footwork - 28; Groundstrokes - 29; Volley - 30
- Rocket Server: Serve - 35; Footwork - 27; Groundstrokes - 28; Volley - 30
- Powerful Strokes: Serve - 28; Footwork - 30; Groundstrokes - 33; Volley - 29
- Clay Courter: Serve - 27; Footwork - 30; Groundstrokes - 34; Volley - 29
- Volley Master: Serve - 28; Footwork - 30; Groundstrokes - 27; Volley - 35

My guide is based in the experience of an All-Around Player/Various Shots, but
if I would have to recommend one style, I would recommend 'Hard Hitter' or
'Powerful Strokes' since the game was made for hard hitters (on the baseline)
to succeed. In Virtua Tennis 2, you could dominate if you were good playing
near the net. In this one, that's not the case. Also, it will be a lot easier
to finish the Tennis Academy missions with all golds and to beat every
tournament without losing a game in any match.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
V. Tournament Mode
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.How to play against King:

Win the tournament with a D grade (or worse) without losing any game in any
match. The easiest way to do it is to set the number of games for a match to
one game. If you're havind a hard time lowering your grades, just make sure
you spend a lot of time beating an opponent. To do it, you may just let the
time go by at your serve.

2.How to play against Duke:

Win the tournament with a C grade (or better) without losing any game in any
match. The easiest way to do it is to set the number of games for a match to
  one game.

3.How to play as King or Duke:

To play as King, you will have to beat him on the Tournament SPT Final.
To play as Duke, you will have to beat him on the Tournament SPT Final.
Alternatively, you can beat both at the same time, by playing the
  tournament in doubles mode.
Once you do it, King and/or Duke will be available in the character
  selection screen.

4.Maximum level for King and Duke:

When you first play against King/Duke it will say "Level 0", wich is the
difficulty of your opponent. Everytime you beat King or Duke, that "Level"
will rise until it reaches "Level 99". Anyway, you won't be rewarded for
  beating Duke/King "Level 99".

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VI. World Tour Mode
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The World Tour mode is already familiar to any Virtua tennis fan. The big
differences in Virua Tennis 3 are the fact that you can't buy your gear (you
will have to unlock it) and that you have an yearly based calendar.
You have a 20 year carreer limit at the start, but once you win the SPT Final
(Doubles) that limit won't exist anymore and you can play on a semi-permanent
basis. Good luck and have fun!

1A.How to play against King & Duke (Doubles) - The SPT Final:

To Play the SPT Final (Doubles match against King & Duke), wich will be the
last ranked tournament of the World Tour, you'll have to play and get medaled
in every tournament. Here's a list of all the tournaments you can play
  throughout the World Tour:

1B . Beating King & Duke (Doubles)

Beating King & Duke in doubles competition is the most difficult challenge in
the whole game. They are quick on their feet, strong on there strokes and
almost perfect on their volleys. If you want to beat them without losing a
single game, the challenge will be even tougher, but it is possible! I can't
do it for you, but I will tell you how I did it.

General Tips:
- Choose a good volley player to be your partner (your partner will be the same
partner you chosse the most in the yearly calendar. It is also the player you
  face on King of Players)
- Be very patient. The only way to win tough matches is with patience. If you
try to rush it, you will most likely lose the point

Specific Tips:
In this particular match, your strategy should be the some when you are serving
or when any other of the players are serving.
- Set your teammate strategy to "Netplay"
- Don't play baseline! If you do, you'll have both King & Duke near the net
and when you do, it will be almost impossible to win the point
- Play near de first line (between the baseline and the net), without going
  past it
- Let your teammate decide. He will try to get almost every ball and finish the
point. Don't interfere with that. Don't try to be a hero!
- Since your teammate is not perfect, you will have to get those loose balls.
Do it always using strokes to the opponent who is furthest from the net
- Move laterally so that your teammate is always on the opposite side of the
opponent who is near the net
- BE PATIENT!

If you do this right, you'll win 6-0 and you can celebrate, because if you can
do this, you can do everything else in the game... with some patience and some
retrys, of course! ;)

If you win without losing a game, you should see something like this on your
calendar (copy link to your browser's adress bar to see the images):

Note: I strongly recommend that you have a teammate who is strong playing near
the net. Dent is probably the best choice but players like Haas, Henman and
Ancic should do the job well.

2A. How to play against King or Duke:

Once you've won the SPT Final, you will be able to play against King in a
singles match every week. If you beatIf you beat King, you opponet for the
next weeks will be Duke, until you beat him. If you beat Duke, your
opponent will be King, once again. And so on...

2B. Beating King (Singles)

King is an All-Around player. He is very good at everything but not excelent
at any thing. Anyway, if you want to beat him 6-0 it my take a few tries. But
if you just want to win, no matter what the final result really is, it is very
easy, if you follow my tips... specially the tips for your serve.

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be a good
baseline player, but you will have to be good volleying the ball too.
- Be patient at all times! If you lose your cool, you will lose your points

On your serve:
- Place yourself away from the center of the court (one step away from the
side of the court, or something like that), before you serve
- Always use your underhook serve (Lob button + Back Direction) and do it as
  angled as you can
- If you do that well, King will always try to strike along the line (will not
go for a cross stroke), so, anticipate it and rush to the net, closing the
line and volleying the ball to the opposite side (cross volley). It will
result in an immediate point or, sometimes, in a play that will unbalance
King and allow you to finish the point quickly
- In higher levels, you may want to mix it up with some (very) wide serves,
followed by long cross top spin shots

On King's serve:
- Counter King's serve with short cross slice shots
- If you do so, chances are he's going to use a stroke alond the like. Just
counter that stroke with a long cross slice shot. He'll go once again try
a shot along the line. Take advantage of it and unleash all your power with
one, two or three powerful cross-court top spin shots to finish the point.
- In higher levels (i.e., Level 15 and above) King will use various shots in
different occasions. Just try to keep up with him. Once you have a chance to
attack he'll have some problems keeping up with you

2C. Beating Duke (Singles)

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be a good
baseline player, but you will have to be good volleying the ball too.
- Be patient at all times! If you lose your cool, you will lose your points

On your serve:
- Always serve to the middle! The counter shot will be a cross shot with little
angle that will give you the opportunity to take control of the point
- Use short top spin strokes at the baseline, with a lot of angle (Back
Direction + Side Direction + Top Spin Button). Once Duke is unbalanced, you
can use a long crossed Top Spin shot
- If Duke hits a drop shot, rush to the net and finish the play with a long
top spin shot along the line or a short crossed top spin shot (it will
depend on the position of Duke, but most of the times, the best choice will
be a long top spin shot along the line)

On Duke's serve:
- Counter Duke's serves with short crossed slice shot
- Most of the times you do that, Duke will hit a drop shot. Rush to the net
and finish the play with a long top spin shot along the line or a short
crossed top spin shot (it will depend on the position of Duke, but most of
the times, the best choice will be a long top spin shot along the line)

_______________________________________________________________________________

3. Consider this:
   - There are 3 different groups of players with similar styles
   - The first group is: Dent, Roddick, Ancic and Henman. This is the group
of the big servers and volley players. The tactics you will use against
them will have to be similar, even though each of them have their own
unique characteristics (power, speed, etc) that will affect a bit your
     gameplay.
Their main problem: bad countering very wide serves. They will always
follow wide serves with shots along the line
   - The second group is: Blake, Nadal, Haas and Nalbandian. This is the group
of baseline players, even though Haas is an All-Arounder who likes to
approach the net. Once again, if you understand the routine of one of
them, you'll understand the routine of each of them. The main difference
is that some are faster, others are stronger
Their main problem: They are very vulnerable to the underhook serve. They
will always follow an underhook serve with a counter shot along the line
that you just have to volley cross court to win the point; also, most of
their shots will be cross court shots so they are very predictable
   - The last group is: Hewitt, Ferrero, Monfils, Grosjean and Federer. This
are the hardest players to play against. They are more unpredictable than
the others and have powerful and angled shots at the same time. The
exception is Federer who is actually the easiest Pro to beat in this game

3A. Beating Dent

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be a good
  baseline player
- His style is similar to Henman's, but Dent is much more effective

On your serve:
- Perform your serve near the lateral line of the court
- Use wide serves to make Dent lose his balance and not approach the net
- Use long top spin strokes along the line

On his serve:
- Counter his serve with long sliced shots along the line
- Use long top spin strokes along the line or short cross top spin strokes,
  depending on Henman's shots

3B. Beating Federer

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be a good
baseline player, but you will have to be good volleying the ball too.
- Be patient at all times! If you lose your cool, you will lose your points

On your serve:
- Serve to the middle
- His shots won't be very powerful. Not at all
- Most of the times you can end the point with 2 or 3 strokes
- He's going to hit a short ball often at his third or fourth shot. Just
take that chance to take control of the point. If you're a good volley
player, just finish with a volley shot (be careful with his lob shots)

On his serve:
- Just counter his serve with a long slice shot along the line and wait to
see what he's going to do
- His shots won't be very powerful. Not at all
- He's going to hit a short ball often at his third or fourth shot. Just
take that chance to take control of the point. If you're a good volley
player, just finish with a volley shot (be careful with his lob shots)

3C. Beating Nalbandian

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be an
  average volley player
- Similar to Tommy Haas, with two minor differences: Haas is faster; David
Nalbandian is stronger on his strokes
- Approach the net as soon as possible

On your serve:
- Aproach the lateral court line and perform your underhook serve. Blakes
counter shot will always go along the line, so get ahead of him and
protect the line, using a cross cort volley (top spin) to win the point

On his serve:
- Counter his serve with long slice shots along the line
- Almost all of his shots will be cross top spin shots. Just be quick to
aproach the net and keep your player in the middle line of the court,
anticipating a cross shot to win easy points on volleys

3D. Beating Hewitt

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be a good
baseline player, but you will have to be good volleying the ball too.
- Be patient at all times! If you lose your cool, you will lose your points

On your serve:
- Serve to the middle and take two steps back of the baseline so you have
more time to react and hit the ball with a lot more power
- If you hit a weak shot, watch out for his drop shots

On his serve:
- Take two steps back of the baseline so you have
more time to react and hit the ball with a lot more power
- If you hit a weak shot, watch out for his drop shots

3E. Beating Roddick

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be a good
baseline player, but you will have to be good volleying the ball too.
- Be patient at all times! If you lose your cool, you will lose your points

On your serve:
- Use wide serves (as wide as you can) - position yourself near the lateral
  line
- Many of his strokes will be along the line (most of them will, actually),
so be prepared to protect the line and counter with good top spin shots

On his serve:
- Counter his serves with long slice shots along the line
- Many of his strokes will be along the line (most of them will, actually),
so be prepared to protect the line and counter with good top spin shots
- Before attacking him with top spin strokes, slow down the game. Use a
couple of slice shots before starting your attacks and, once you do, try
  to finish fast

3F. Beating Haas

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be an
  average volley player
- Similar to Tommy Haas, with two minor differences: Haas is faster; David
Nalbandian is stronger on his strokes
- Approach the net as soon as possible

On your serve:
- Aproach the lateral court line and perform your underhook serve. Haas'
counter shot will always go along the line, so get ahead of him and
protect the line, using a cross cort volley (top spin) to win the point

On his serve:
- Counter his serve with long slice shots along the line
- Almost all of his shots will be cross top spin shots. Just be quick to
aproach the net and keep your player in the middle line of the court,
anticipating a cross shot to win easy points on volleys

3G. Beating Monfils

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be a good
baseline player, but you will have to be good volleying the ball too.
- Be patient at all times! If you lose your cool, you will lose your points
- Monfils is the most Unpredictable player in the game

On your serve:
- Use underhook serve and place yourself in a position where you can cover
both the line and the middle of the court. It may be tricky sometimes
since he stays near the net

3H. Beating Nadal

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be an
  average volley player
- Be very agressive approching the net

On your serve:
- Serve wide. Most of Nadal's shot will be cross court top spin shots.
Just aproach the net and stay where you can anticipate those shots to
  win easy points

On his serve:
- Counter his serve with a long slice shot along the line
- Almost all of his shots will be cross top spin shots. Just be quick to
aproach the net and keep your player in the middle line of the court,
anticipating a cross shot to win easy points on volleys

3I. Beating Grosjean

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be a good
baseline player, but you will have to be good volleying the ball too.
- Be patient at all times! If you lose your cool, you will lose your points

On your serve:
- Use underhook serve and place yourself in a position where you can cover
both the line and the middle of the court. It may be tricky sometimes
since he stays near the net

On his serve:
- He has the speed advantage so you won't want to speed up the game at the
  start of the points
- Just use one or two slice shots before you attack with your top spin shots
- He will always go for (very) angled cross shots

3J. Beating Ferrero

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be a good
  baseline player
- Be patient at all times! If you lose your cool, you will lose your points

On your serve:
- Aproach the lateral court line and perform your underhook serve. Blakes
counter shot will always go along the line, so get ahead of him and
protect the line, using a cross cort volley (top spin) to win the point

On his serve:
- If you want to start with top spins, ferrero will kill you fast
- Use some slice shots at the start of the point and once you have the
balance needed to make a good counter shot, just hit a powerful
groundtroke. Once you get Ferrero unbalanced, it will be easier to win
  the point

3K. Beating Ancic

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be a good
baseline player, but you will have to be average at volleying the ball
  too.
- Be agressive, but do not rush!

On your serve:
- Perform your serve near the lateral line of the court
- Use wide serves
- Use long cross top spin strokes

3L. Beating Blake

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be an
  average volley player
- Be very agressive approching the net. If you're not one of two things will
happen: You'll be beaten at baseline or your volley will be to long and
  end up 'Out'

On your serve:
- Aproach the lateral court line and perform your underhook serve. Blake's
counter shot will always go along the line, so get ahead of him and
protect the line, using a cross cort volley (top spin) to win the point
- An alternative is to serve wide. Most of Blake's shot will be cross court
top spin shots. Just aproach the net and stay where you can anticipate
those shots to win easy points

On his serve:
- Counter his serve with a long cross slice shot
- Almost all of his shots will be cross top spin shots. Just be quick to
aproach the net and keep your player in the middle line of the court,
anticipating a cross shot to win easy points on volleys

3M. Beating Henman

General Tips:
- Get your players attributes maxed up. It will be important to be a good
  baseline player
- Henman is one of the easiest players to play against in the game (not
considering King of Players Tournament) so you should have no problem
beating him, even if you try different things

On your serve:
- Use wide serves to make Henman lose his balance and not approach the net
- Use long top spin strokes along the line

On his serve:
- Counter his serve with long sliced shots along the line
- Use long top spin strokes along the line or short cross top spin strokes,
  depending on Henman's shots

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VII. King of Players
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Throughout the World Tour Mode you have a variety of difficulties. Very Easy
for the Rank 300 tournaments, Easy for the Rank 204 tournaments, Normal for the
Rank 100 tournaments, Hard for the Rank 56 tournaments (Grand Slams) and Very
Hard for King of Players tournament.
By using the tactics stated in this guide, you should be able to beat (with
more or less difficulty) some of the players as King of Players.
In the King of Players tournament the players are a lot better then they are
in Grand Slams or any other tournament so I wouldo suggest you to avoid the
players you can't beat or have a hard time beating in other ranked tournaments.
Players who like to approach the net are the hardest to play, bur Hewitt,
Grosjean and Nadal should also be hard to play against since they can catch
almost every ball!!!
I would recommend you to play Federer if you want to get the platinum medal
(win without loosing any game in that match).

The King of Players will be your Doubles partner (assuming that you keep the
same partner for a year). To get Federer in king of Players tournament for
instance, just play all doubles tournaments with him and accept his invitations
for practice matches. That should do it.

Also note that if you win 3 straight games, your opponent will become a super
opponent! That's why it should be hard getting that 6-0 on your way to the
platinum medal.

I will give you some tips on how to win the King of Players tornament against
Federer, using an All-Around player (all attributes with a Level 30):
1. Getting to a 3-0 lead:
   - This is the easy part
   - Just serve wide from your original position. He'll counter with a weak
shot along the line. Attack him with long cross-court top spin shots.
   - Counter his serves with long cross-court slice shots and attack him along
the line until he throws a high ball too you. Once he does that, attack
him with long cross-court top spin shots
   - If you're having problems with the power of his serves, just take a step
     back before he serves
   - Watch for his short sliced shots. learn how to take advantage of that
2. All the way to a 6-0 victory:
   - Time to face Super Federer! He'll be quicker, stronger and more
     unpredictable than ever before
   - Time to try your underhook serve and cover the line. If that works for
you, just stick to it. If Federer counters it with an extreme angled shot
just go back to your previous strategy
   - If Federer use a cross-court shot to counter your serve, change your
serving position a little (away from the center of the court)
   - Counter his serves with slice shots along the line; consider positioning
yourself two steps behind the baseline
   - Show Federer you ability to play near the net

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VIII. Achievments and Gear
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are some ways to get gear throughout your carreer. Keep in mind that
once you've won the SPT Final, the 20 years limit will not count anymore
(even though the time keeps going by).

  1. Win tournaments:
If you want to get all the items in the game, not only you will have to
win all tournaments, you'll have to do it without losing a game in any
match, during a single tournament (in order to get the platinum medal).
Once you do it, you will have unlocked all gear associated with the
ranked tournaments. Also, you will need to win some tournaments a couple
of times, i.e., you will be rewarded after winning tournaments ranked
-204 for 15 times, ou winning Grand Slams 3 times.
Just check the list of tournaments that is above, in this guide.

  2. Play Doubles Tornaments:
By winning 3 or 4 Double tornaments with the same partner, he'll give
you his own sportswear. You'll need it in order to get all items!
Don't lose your time playing Mixed Doubles tournaments to get gear.
Also, my advive is that you keep the same partner until he rewards you
for your loyalty. Then, just pick anyone else to the next tornaments.

  3. Win Friendly Matches:

The second way of getting specific gear from the other Pros is to play
a couple of friendly matches with them. Once you've obtained a specific
player's gear, there's no point in keep doing friendly matches with him
to get more gear... because you won't.

  4. Win Pin Crusher Challenges:
The third and last way to get gear from the Pros is win Pin Crusher
Challenges against them. If you do, you'll get that player's Racket.
Once you've obtained the player's favourite Racket, there's no point in
doing any more challenges with him.
Also, there's no point in doing challenges with female players (assuming
your player is a male one)

  5. Beat Mini Games (Training):
In order to get 100% in the Training Stat, you'll need to get an Excellent
in all levels of the Mini Games. But if you just want the gear, win them
until Level 6 (Level 6 is included)

  6. Succeed in Tennis Academy Challenges [You can find videos on Youtube.com
showing you how to succeed in the hardest ones with a gold medal]

  7. Miscellaneous Achievments:

There's a number of achievments that will give you other gear. I'll make
a list of the achievments and gear that is unlocked by them:

Cheesy Notes:
Ok! By looking at the achievment list you may think that some of those
technical achievments are almost impossible to get in the 20 year carreer.
And probably you're right... unless you do some cheesy gameplay.
Anyway, at some point you'll have your character all built up and you won't
know what the rank 300 tournaments are for anymore. So I will tell you! They
are good to get the technical achievments like winning points with lobs,
smashes and drop shots, as well as doing MAX serves.
Since you will be able to score as you like, just do double faults so you
won't win the game and keep the game in advantages oe deuce. Always aim for
those max serves!
Also, against quick players like Nadal, it will be easy to do some smashes by
serving to the middle, then use a top spin shot along the line and smash the
ball to wherever you want.
Against volley players, you can win a lot of points with lob shots. Just use
your underhook serve to make them approach the net, approach the net yourself
and do a lob shot to win the point.
That's it. Cheesy but effective.

IX. Mini Games FAQ
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In order to get 100% on the Training Stat, you have to beat every level of
every game with an "Excelent" message in the end. Here is the list of all mini
games and what you have to do in each level of the game:

A. Alien Attack: Drive off the attacking aliens
Drive off advancing aliens with groundstrokes. Press the shot button early
to increase power. Aim to make sure you hit all the aliens
   Level 1 - 60 seconds (with bombs)

   Level 6 - 60 seconds (with bombs)

B. Panic Balloon: Pop the target balloons
The target balloons are marked with arrows that show the way the ball will
bounce. Try to anticipate where the ball's going and get there fast
[Use lob shots to hit more than one ballon and score points faster]
   Level 1 - 60 seconds/ 1800 points
   Level 2 - 60 seconds/ 2200 points
