        Remember Morrowind?  Enchantment was a skill - practically useless, as
it was almost impossible to level without training.  Besides the fact that you
had a very good chance of failing at enchanting whatever it was you were
attempting to enchant.  Very annoying to lose those Golden Saint grand souls.

        In any case, Bethesda enhanced enchantment in the newest release.  Now
you can go to the Arcane University and use an altar to enchant items.  It also
costs less than it did in Morrowind (though everything costs less compared to
Morrowind anyway).  There are no NPCs that can do enchantment for you; you need
to gain access to the Arcane University by getting all the Mages Guild
Recommendations (see a Mages Guild guide for instructions).  Or if you bought
the Wizard's Tower mod from Bethesda, you can purchase an upgrade that includes
Spellmaking and Enchanting Altars.  (I think this is cheating a bit though).

        I have to say, Bethesda definitely did good in this aspect of the game.
Enchantments become a more integral part of the game without breaking it.

        At the basic level, to perform an enchantment, you need these four
things:

- A filled soul gem (sec. 05-00)
- An equipable item without an existing enchantment
- Ability to cast the spell you wish to enchant with (sec. 04-00)
- Access to an Enchanting Altar

        Soul Gems and Spells are discussed later in this guide.  For the 
equipment, it can be anything you wear or fight with - ie., a helm, sword, ring,
amulet, cuirass, etc.  Unlike in Morrowind, the quality of the item doesn't 
affect the magnitude of enchantment you can apply to the item.  Like in 
Morrowind, an Exquisite Amulet could hold more charge than a Common Amulet.  
This is not the case in Oblivion; a half-rusted out iron cuirass can hold the 
same charge as a Daedric cuirass.

        Also note that any enchantment applied to a wearable item is always 
going to have a Constant Effect.  You don't need to fill up a Grand Soul Gem
(like in Morrowind) to perform this.  Heck, you can use a Petty Soul to enchant
something with a Constant Effect; it just won't have the magnitude of a Grand
Soul.

        And, no, YOU CANNOT ENCHANT SOMETHING WITH MORE THAN 1600 CHARGE.

|  Spell Effects........................................................04-00  |

        Like in Morrowind, you need to know how to cast a spell before you can
enchant an item with it.  Even if you bought the spell, you need to be able to
cast it to enchant an item with it.  Generally this is not such a problem.  For
example, you don't need to know an uber powerful fire spell to enchant a weapon
with a high fire damage.  Because you know the basic fire spell from the very
beginning of the game, you can enchant your weapon with Fire.  Therefore, it is
in your advantage to buy inexpensive spells of every magical effect that you
can find.  A very good site for that is here:

        Also, unlike in Morrowind, there are certain spell effects that you
cannot transfer to an item, much to my dismay.  I definitely liked having my
amulet that restored 2 health a second.  Can't do that here.  Some spells that
you can't use are Restore Health, Restore Fatigue, Spell Absorption, and
Invisibility.

        But for the spells you can use, I have compiled a list:

        Also like in Morrowind, you need a Soul Gem filled with the soul of
a dead creature (or even an NPC, see sec. 05-06).  What's different is that the
values of the different souls are the same.  Let me explain.

        In Morrowind, you had different values for each soul, even if it filled
the same type of soul gem.  For example, a Golden Saint had a value of 80,000
while a Winged Twilight only has 60,000.  Both require a Grand Soul Gem.  In
Oblivion, any creature that fills a Grand Soul Gem has a value of 1600.  Doesn't
matter what it is; as long as it needs a Grand Soul Gem, it'll fill it to the
top.

        I will now list the different Soul Gems, their values, and what 
creatures fill the gems.  For more information on the creatures listed, see my
Bestiary on GameFAQs.

        Black Soul Gems are the tools of Necromancers.  They have the unique
ability to trap an NPC soul.

        You can get a Black Soul Gem one of two ways - they can be looted 
sometimes from necromancers (I haven't found one yet, but I know it happens) or 
you can make them.  Easiest place to make them is at Dark Fissure, which you 
will have the map marker to if you progressed past "The Necromancer's Moon" in 
the Mage's Guild quests.  Otherwise, it's due east of Vaermina' Shrine, just to 
the right of the "R" in "The Reed River."  Bring an empty Grand Soul Gem with 
you and be sure you can perform a soul trap spell (not through use of a 
weapon!).  Once you get to Dark Fissure, wait till it's between 1:00 and 3:00 
AM.  The day seems to differ from game to game.  There should be a little 
moonlight shining directly on the altar outside the entrance to Dark Fissure.  
If not, keep waiting 24 hours until it does.  Put your Grand Soul Gem in the 
altar and cast Soul Trap on it.  Reopen the altar and you should have a Black 
Soul Gem.

        These NPCs can fill a Black Soul Gem:

Any Dremora (in the Oblivion Planes)
Any of the 10 humanoid NPCs, including vampires

        The interface is simple.  Click on the box that says "Soul Gem" to
choose which Gem you want to use.  Click on "Item" for the piece of equipment
you want to enchant.

        After this is done, a list of applicable effects will appear in the box
below the Item.  Scroll to find the effect you want to apply and choose the
variables you want.  Once chosen, they will appear in the box titled "Added
Effects."  Once you can add no more effects to the Item, the list of applicable
effects will disappear.

        The Type/Charges label depicts whether the enchantment is Constant
Effect or On Strike.  If it's On Strike, it will display the value of the soul
and the number of charges the weapon will hold.  For example, a weapon that uses
a Grand Soul and can be used 20 times would appear like so: 1600/20.

        Cost is simply how much it will cost you to enchant this item.  PC Gold
is how much gold you have on your person (which, hopefully, is enough to
enchant your item).

A: If that item is a weapon, then yes.  If it's wearable, such as armor or a
   ring, I don't believe you can.  At least, I haven't found out how to.
