"Gran Turismo - A brutally honest opinion...."

Ok, let me begin by saying I am a hardcore Gran Turismo fan. I love the series, I love the cars, I love the replay value.

However, in Gran Turismo 5, a lot of simple mistakes have been made.

Firstly, loading times. How, after a >8gb download file, do I have to wait for the menu to load? What about the loading of the cutscene for your new car (even though it's only the nose)? How about the horrendous loading times for each track... wasn't the data supposed to be downloaded to your HD?

Secondly, this game is too easy! I still find ways to hammer through corners off vehicles, ride the rails and - in essence - bounce my way around the track. I have very little motivation to perfect driving lines and gently massage my way through the pack to win races. I still find myself staying heavy on the gas and 'banking' myself around tracks to win. Any damage is disproportionately irrelevant.

Third, the AI. It tries, yes, but still follows a highly mechanical line. The opponents all seem to have the same personality, and I see very little aggressive moves to overtake one another - let alone myself. The cars are predictable, and always seem to allow you to draft-till-you're-ready-to-pass. It isn't horrible, but no one is going to be prepared for online play after practicing with these mundane opponents.

Fourth, the behind-the-car and inteior camera. Behind the car: Why only 1 height, why no 'camera wobble', why no ability to look around (via the right control stick?) Premium interiors? I would want to get every premium car if only to look around and zoom in on the individual climate control gauges and shift knob. No-can-do with GT5. You get to look out the windshield and see the completely 3-D interior from a stale angle. No, I don't have a PSeye with headtracking, but I do have a right control stick I'll never use for this game.

Lastly, who in their right mind decided users can't add their own decals/stripes/tint/carbon fibre/exhaust pipes/headlight/interior modifications. Even being able to change the steering wheel or gauge colour would have been nice. See enjoyment from customizing your stuff: Call of Duty, Need for Speed, Dirt 2.

While not a complete review of the game, these issues are obvious to any seasoned gamer - and after 5 years + creating GT5, did any of the Polyphony team get real GAMERS to test it?

Anyways, I'm going to hit the 'nurb with my M3.
