You can't sign in with two PSN ID's on one PS3 for Borderlands (therefore you can't have a friend come over to play with you then go home and use the same character).
The key word being for Borderlands, because other games like Resistance 2, Sacred 2, Little Big Planet allow you to.
And apparently the Gearbox devs did not even know this function exists for the PS3:

No, unfortunately. Not at this time, only Xbox 360 has the ability to have two profiles running simultaneously. The PS3 doesn't have that feature.

They're working on it, though! It should be out with the next patch.

Actually it all depends on the game... Resistance 2 had an update (WAY to late imo) that made it so two profiles can be active at the same time... Hopefully Borderlands does the same.

so if you have a friend with a ps3 and borderlands, you can. you would have to copy his save file on a flash drive and copy it to your ps3, then play co-op that way. The one complicated thing about it however is that if you try to copy their borderland's save file and it was the first one they made, it will overwrite the first one you made on your ps3. so basically, each profile made has an unwritten number attached to it, and you can't have 2 on one profile to play split screen. --- to solve this problem have your friend make a second profile and level up on that one, not the first one he made---- I'm not saying this is %100 for sure but i've messed around a lot with borderland save files.

I would think their working on it for later on just like in resistance 2 problem is that in resistance you have online profiles... like if your level 32 it sticks with you psn... but in borderlands if you have 32 soldier it doesn't stick with your psn its just saved on your ps3... so yeah... playing 2 separate psn's might be pointless... but lets see what they do

yooooooo i got good info on the the split screen problem!!! vicious7(one of your answerers) said about this thread... gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=76607 that gear box devs don't know anything about the multiple sign in function on ps3... vicious7 is wrong... i talked to the gear box dev and he said "We're actively working on this problem for Borderlands due in no small part to this thread." so... yeah and i was wrong to... they can actually do it simply... because when you do multiple sign ins... you log on to the user not only to the psn... you can log the save data and everything... so maybe we will be expecting a update for splitscreen ok??? =)
