A question on hacking...?

I see that fortifying a hack job has a high chance of detection, but you don't need to do it to succeed. How exactly does fortifying help you out??

Fortifying gives you more time to hack the server. When you are detected, each number is a time amount that you and the computer take to acquire the node. It is wise to start moving forward before fortifying as you push the time in your favor, giving you time to aquire additional items, money and experience before overriding the system. Fortify everything the security must go through to boot you from the system when detected, you'll notice the time will go up.

PS: the computer can do this as well, giving it more time to find you.
