"Goodbye Laura Croft, Hello Nathan Drake"
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the second adventure of Nathan Drake brought to us by Naughty Dog, creators of such hit series as Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter.
Naughty Dog does not disappoint as the gameplay is incredible. The game is very easy to pick up and play. The controls are very smooth. Now, just because the game is easy to pick up and play does not mean the game is easy. There are five different levels of difficulties to choose from ranging from Very Easy, if you want to take Drake on a stroll through the park, to Crushing, if you want to torture Nathan Drake and yourself for several hours. It should be noted that not all difficulties are available at the start of the game so if you are looking for that crushing experience right from the get go you will be disappointed.
The story of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is riveting. It draws you in and keeps you interested as you platform and shoot your way through several different locations to learn more about the treasure you are seeking, those who have sought it before you, your enemies, your friends and even yourself. Overall, if you are a fan of action movies or books it is a fairly cliché story but entertaining none the less. Quirky and comedic dialogue is found throughout and a few catch phrases you may find yourself repeating.
The game looks great. The graphics are stunning. There is very little clipping and the scenery is as realistic as I have ever seen in a videogame. This game looks far better than the original uncharted which was amazing in its own right. The attention given to all the characters is amazing, they used full body motion capture with actors to film all the cinemas giving them an almost movie quality. Detail was given to all the different skins available to choose from. The fact that they put so much effort into a bonus feature is just incredible.
The voice acting for the game if fantastic, the best I have ever seen in a game. The voices fit the characters there is no doubt about that. The characters voices make you feel like they are real people. Really I can not say more just know the voice acting is incredible.
All this amazing graphics and voice acting would fall flat though if it was not accompanied by an amazing score. Greg Edmonson has created several original pieces that help fit the mood of the game. This bit of music is what makes the game feel almost like a movie.
The game itself should take you between 13-18 hours your first play through depending on what difficulty you set it at as well as how much exploring for treasure you are doing.
Once the game is completed not only is their incentive to go back through on the challenging crushing difficulty, there is also multiplayer. Something that Naughty Dog really did not need to include as the games price would have been completely justified without. Instead Naughty dog went above and beyond and included a decent multiplayer experience with the game as well. You can choose from competitive and co-op match types. From Death Match to Treasure Plunder there is enough here to keep you coming back for more.
This game is incredible and if you are a fan of multiplayer definitely worth buying. If you feel that once you have completed the game that is all she wrote, then I suggest renting the game as it could easily be beaten in one rent.
