"UFC Undisputed Review"
UFC's second third generation attempt Improves on last years smash hit!
This year THQ decided to Improve the total structure of the game. From top to bottom THQ has touched the game in all the right places to make it purr, there is however always room for improvement and most of that is in the game play but that's not to say the game play is bad its actually much improved in some areas with a few persistent ticks in others.
The UFC... quite possibly the most recognizable MMA organization in the world that contains most of the worlds greatest fighters. Sounds perfect to transfer to the video game realm doesn't it? Well, it transfers very well though it still seems to be going through something of a growing process that every new franchise has to deal with.
Let me first get this out of the way. If you do not follow the sport of MMA, playing this game may be a bit difficult to understand at first. It does have a tutorial that does a pretty good job of showing you how to play the game but if you were to jump straight in you may be somewhat confused.
The stand up game is, I feel personally, vastly improved over last year. You can duck and weave punches and counter back easily. This was one of the biggest gripes last year and it is great that it has been added. However, it can create some awkward situations when you dodge a punch, or at least think you do, but end up running into another punch. The biggest example is if you dodge a hook by swinging side to side you may still get hit by it even if you dodge in a direction AWAY from the punch. The however multitude of strikes that have been added (jumping kicks, switch kicks, axe kicks, signature punches among others) makes one forget about this as you try out new strikes.
Now, to the grappling which is where many who do not follow the sport will get lost. The controls is left pretty much unchanged with the exception that the controls for grappling on the ground are now used in the clinch. This makes it much easier to keep track of everything. With the new posture system that is very risk/reward for how you use it this portion of the game is leaps and bounds better than last year. With, one exception. The submissions. While the submissions are great looking and there have been a ton added, they feel almost impossible to pull off with most of the fighters and don't even bother trying for them in career mode. A patch may change this later though.
Now, to presentation. It's great, you can watch full events you create yourself now and it is awesome. With one exception. Everything is in except for the entrances and this doesn't seem like a big deal at first because in the UFC not much happens during entrances but it just feels, weird.
All in all it is a great step up from last years game, while.. at the same time it still has much work to do. All in all, if you are a fan of the sport it is more than worth a rental.
