"Not quite a black belt"

THQ's first attempt with UFC Undisputed 2009 was a good attempt at capturing the essence of Mixed Martial Arts. UFC Undisputed 2010 for the most part improves on the formula, but the improvements are minor and don't negate the poor online implementation and the repetitive career mode. Furthermore, a poor tutorial makes it hard for newcomers and those that have taken time off from the previous game to learn the nuances of the game. UFC Undisputed 2010 isn't a bad game by any means, but it could have been so much more.

For those that don't already know, UFC is the biggest Mixed Martial Arts promotion in the industry. Mixed Martial Arts encompasses and incorporates multiple fighting disciplines and pits the fighters against each other. Some more utilized ones include wrestling, muay thai, boxing, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The sport has grown drastically over the last 5 years.

2010 has 2 core elements to the fighting system; the standup and grappling portion. The standup for the most part holds up quite well. Combos are strung together with fluidity. Counters and blocking also add depth to the combo. Players will be able to punch and kick. Depending on the timing, players can exact some hefty damage on their opponents. Grappling is a little bit trickier in 2010. The submission system against an AI opponent still feels broken. Additionally, it has become much more difficult to control an opponent on the ground. While this would've have made things better than last year, the poor tutorial system makes it difficult to understand. Consequently, it becomes more frustrating than fun at times.

One major issue is the poorly implemented online play. Most games that I play through, the lag was nearly unbearable. It pretty much made online play moot. Furthermore, getting into a ranked online match was painful as well. Overall, online play in 2010 was poorly implemented and detracted from the overall game.

The graphics for UFC 2010 for the most part is fairly solid. The character models for the most part looks fairly good, but at times can be a bit choppy. The animation flows well. The in game physics looks pretty good as well, especially when someone gets knocked out. Additionally, seeing someone's head bounce back due to the sheer force of the attack provides detail that adds value to the game. The music in the game was fairly solid, but I felt last years' was better. The commentary remains to be spot on. It felt like Joe Rogan in a live UFC event.

UFC Undisputed 2010 is a solid game. There are some improvements to the 2009, but the improvements do not over come some of the shortcomings that were forgivable last year. Online play was poorly implemented. Career mode became too drawn out and ended up being repetitive. UFC Undisputed 2010 simply isn't worth the 60 dollar price tag. A rental would suffice.

Gameplay - 7/10
Graphics - 8/10
Sound - 8/10
Value - 6/10
Overall - 7.3/10
