Question from slimshadymazz

Whats the best way to initiate upper hand? (Sneak attack)

So a lot of the time when I run up to a monster to initiate combat right before I get there it spins around. Is there anyway to make it successful more often, like walking when your close as opposed to running?

slimshadymazz provided additional details:

So they can attack based on sound If I walk then, instead of run I should have less chance of being detected?

Ragnawind answered:

Walking in the beginner is easier, but you also have to predict its movements to not be seen or heard. It runs after you when it sees you or hears you. There is a Merit Award that makes it easier, also. Also, if it starts running away when you get stronger, it is a lot easier to get the upper hand, as long as you can catch it.

as part of the side-story with a certain character who asks you riddles you get a spell called veil. It makes you invisible to all enemies, and if you run into them while it's active, even if you hit them head on, it's a sneak attack. Useful for a certain enemy that gives massive exp in the last dungeon (vague to avoid spoilers.)

unfortunatly you dont get veil til closer to the end of the game, but it is still amazing. Though the effect only last for one encounter, so you have to reapply it alot.

The first thing you should try is to have a high enough level that they run after that you have to catch up to them. Make sure their is a yellow background behind the (!) icon. It will help to have the merit award that can help you with this. It cost two stamps pages.

Plutonicus answered:

Easiest way (kind of an exploit though, and can get tiring to do every time):
Press the square button and cast a spell - doesn't matter what, just cast something that you can cast on the overworld. When the description text is shown at the bottom of the screen, you will still be able to move, but the monsters will be frozen. Use this time to move right behind them, or onto them. Surprise attack virtually guaranteed.

P.S.: If required, you can set the text speed to the slowest possible to make this easier.
