Contrast Walkthrough (PS4)

Overview

Contrast is a basic platformer that uses a 2D/3D mechanic; you switch your charcter between the 3D "real" world and a 2D "shadow" world. Controls are very basic:

  • X to jump
  • O to dash/break walls
  • Square to interact with items
  • R2 to shift into or out of the shadow world
  • Option to bring up the game menu
  • L2 to view Collectibles

There are two types of collectibles in the game: collectibles and luminaries. Collectibles add to the story and you can receive up to three trophies for finding all the collectibles (one each for finding all the collectibles in each Act). Luminaries are used in the game to power equipment. There are no trophies attached to finding all the luminaries and you do not need to find all the luminaries to have enough to use when needed in the game.

Act I: Invisible friend

You begin in an attic loft bedroom.

Collectible - Didi's drawing of her family: Interact with the bureau next to the coat rack in front of you.

You can also Interact with the phonograph to turn music on or off, but there is no other effect. Interact with the lamp under the window to begin the first cutscene. After the cutscene, jump out the window and approach Didi. She'll set up a light to cast shadows from the clothes line on a wall. Stand next to the wall and Shift In to shadow mode and walk down the clothes line's shadow. When your way is blocked, Shift Out and jump down to the ground. Step close to the ash cart and Interact with it to move it closer to the roof where Didi is standing and she will climb down.


The Shadow World

Follow Didi down the alley and there will be another cutscene. Use the shadows to climb up to a balcony--you'll have to Shift Out midway through the climb and then jump-Shift In to continue. Run through the room picking up a luminary as you do.

Luminary: Directly in your path as you go through the room at the top of the alley.

Of all the gin joints...

Go right down the stairs into the street. As you look down the street, you'll see a luminary on a balcony.

Luminary: Go to the shadow of a bicycle to your left and use it to climb up to a balcony with the luminary.

Collectible - Kat Knight Premiering at the Ghost Note: Directly opposite the bicycle, Interact with a poster inside a small cafe seating area.

Collectible - Newpaper Article: Carmine Bruni Aquitted of Murder for Second Time: From the previous collectible, go down the street one block and on your right, just past St. Matthieu's Shelter, look on a table in the courtyard.

Continue down the street toward The Ghost Note until a cutscene starts. Interact with the doors and enter the club. Walk down into the club until you hear Kat ask to put on some lights.

Go up to the right and next to the bar is a switch on the wall that turns on the lights.

Right next to the bar is one of three spotlights that must be re-aimed. Step up to it and Interact with it and move it to the right until the shadow of a sax player is highlighted and the light locks into place. Circle around to the other side of the room and do the same with another spotlight that will highlight the drummer. The third spotlight is on the second floor balcony. Use Shadow Mode to climb either the sax player or drummer (sax player may be easier) to reach the balcony.

Collectible - Department of Child Services Notice: Dereliction of parental duties, RE: Dorothy Malenkaya: On the right side of the balcony, on a table.

Go to the broken spotlight in the center of the balcony and Interact with it to place a luminary in it. Then aim the spotlight at the piano to highlight the pianist and start the show. After the show, go through the lit doorway into a stairwell.

Collectible - Check from Johnny Fenris to Kat Knight: Insufficient Funds: At the bottom and behind the stairs.

The Illusionists

After getting your collectible, go out the lit door, down the alley, and through the gate Didi opens for you. Across the street, Didi waits in front of a wooden wall with a 'Caution' sign. Approach her and you'll be given a Dash ability that can break through some objects.

Trophy Alert: Across the street next to the gate Didi opened for you is a neon sign that reads 'Dirty.' Walk up to the door under the right side of the sign. You'll get the trophy 'Not That Kind Of Game!'

Luminary: Go a little further down the street from 'Dirty' (see Trophy Alerty above) and find the phonograph icon floating in the street. Step into it to activate shadows on the wall to your right. Quickly climb up the shadows to reach the luminary on the balcony.

Trophy Alert: After grabbing the luminary above, jump down behind the iron gate below and go up the stairs into an open room. Interact with the control on the wall for an "Extra Life 2012 Donor List" and a trophy, 'To The Heroes Among Us.'

Luminary: Go to the phonograph icon you used and to your left is a wooden wall. Break through to collect a luminary.

Break through the wall where Didi is standing and follow her down the alley. After a brief cutscene, go inside and listen to another cutscene.

The usual suspects

Step up the light cart and Interact with it to move it around. Move it forward and to the right to create a shadow piano that can be used to climb to the balcony.


Moving the piano's shadow

When you reach the balcony, go outside and around the building on the catwalks. At one point you'll need to Shift In to shadows and cross over to another catwalk.

Luminary: There's one waiting for you as you cross over to the second catwalk.

Re-enter the Jazzbar and go in the Manager's office.

Luminary: There's one in the far right end of the Manager's office.

Collectible - Newspaper Article: The Amazing Vincenzo Hides His Secrets In Plain Sight: In the Manager's office on the coffee table.

Interact with the film reel on the Manager's desk.

Leave the Jazzbar and break through a wall leading to some stairs. After the cutscene, use three of your luminaries to repair the light shining on the billboards. You have to Shift In to shadow and walk across the billboards as Didi follows you with the spotlight. At the end of the first billboard you have to jump, which will automatically cause you to Shift Out of shadows, and then quickly Shift In to shadow again on the second billboard.

Trophy Alert: There are two trophies available here and you can't get them both at the same time. 'My God, It's Full Of Stars' is awarded when you fall to your death. 'Now That's Thinking With Shadows' is awarded if you clear the obstacle on your first try. On your first attempt, if you succeed and get NTTWS, restart from last save and then deliberately fall to your death to get MGIFOS. If you fall the first time, keep restarting from last save until you clear it and get NTTWS.

After crossing the gap, go back across behind the billboards, breaking the framework with Dash and causing the whole thing to collapse into a bridge for Didi to cross.

Collectible - Due to change in management we are currently closed for business: At the front of the cinema box office.

Enter the cinema and cross through into the main lobby where silhouettes of figures are casting huge shadows on the wall. Interact with each silhouette, moving them so their shadows create a "ramp" from left to right up to the balcony. (See picture below.) The dancer's cane needs to be close enough to ground level for you to jump up to it, and then push them close enough together that you can jump across their heads (dancer to vampire to woman) to reach the upper balcony.


Stairstepping the shadows

Collectible - Prison Release: Johnny A. Fenris, Crime: Passing Bad Checks: On a table on the balcony near the door into the theater.

To get from the balcony into the theater, stand next to a wall by the door, Shift In to shadow and walk through the glass and then Shift Out of shadow. Go down into the theater and watch the cutscenes. Go to the back of the theater and use the shadow trick to walk through the glass into the projection room. Interact with the projector to show the film. Follow Didi out of the theater.

The problems of three little people (part 1)

Luminary: After you leave the theater, you are in a courtyard with two umbrellas you can Interact with. Facing the cinema, Interact with the right-hand umbrella to fold it, count five to seven seconds, then Interact with the left-hand umbrella. Quickly go to the back wall, Shift In to shadows and jump up on a chair shadow to the right and wait for the right-hand umbrella to pop up and then jump on top of it. Move left and stand on the shadow next to the left-hand umbrella's pole. As the umbrella starts to unfold, jump and it will carry you up and you can cross to the luminary on a balcony.

Break the wall at the far end of the courtyard, and then cross back over the billboards you broke down earlier. Continue down the street to the Excelsior Hotel.

Luminary: Before going up to the Excelsior, head to the left and walk through the gold microphone icon floating in the street. Use the shadow of Kat that plays on the wall to get up to a luminary on a balcony. First jump up to Kat's back and Shift In to shadow, then jump right on to her head and then jump on her feet as they come close and ride them over to the balcony.

Walk up to the doors of the Excelsior to enter the hotel and begin a couple of cutscenes.

Collectible - Carmine's Debt Book: Johnny Fenris $20 large: After the cutscenes, turn around and go back toward the front door. To your left on a table is the collectible.

Go to the elevators and Interact with the luggage cart. Move the cart to the open elevator on the left and push it in to lower the elevator. Jump up on the elevator and then up to the second floor balcony. Go to the other elevator and Interact with the control to bring it up to the second floor.

Run to the other end of the balcony and Interact with the two control stations. These stations lower chandeliers. Your goal here is to lower the right-hand chandelier so its shadow is low enough for you to jump up on. Lower the left-hand chandelier so you can reach its shadow from the right-hand and then jump up to the third floor balcony.


Setting up the chandeliers

As you go around the balcony, Interact with the fire alarm to lower the elevator to the ground floor. Go around the balcony until you find an open door that leads to a stairwell. Go down the stairs to open a route between the second and third floors.

Luminary: At the bottom of the stairs back to the second floor.

If you positioned the chandeliers properly at the previous step, you can use the shadow of the right-hand chandelier to jump up to the top of a chandelier with a luminary.

The problems of three little people (part 2)

Shift Out of shadow on top of the chandelier and jump up to the fifth floor and start a short cutscene. After the cutscene, go through the room and Dash-break your way outside. Run around outside until a shadow scene starts playing. Shift In and move through the sequence this way...

  • Wait for Kat to start to raise her foot and jump up on it.
  • Ride her foot up onto the table and then jump on the cigarette hanging out of the ashtray. (Looks like a pan with a handle.)
  • Ride the cigarette up and jump over Kat's head onto Johnny.
  • Wait for Johnny to raise his arm and jump on his head.
  • Johnny will take off his hat and carry you over to the balcony where you can Shift Out.

Go through the door and down the stairs. Interact with the door to let Didi in and play the cutscenes that end Act I.

Act II: The Return of the Prodigal

Collectible - Picture of Johnny: On the lamp table behind you as Act II begins.

Walk toward the phonograph to begin a cutscene. After the scene, walk into the hall and Interact with the picture on the wall to begin another cutscene.

Trophy Alert: Get the 'Picture of Johnny' and Interact with the portrait to earn "The Family Life" trophy. (Note: You may have to watch all the cutscenes in this area--no skipping--to earn the trophy.)

Go down the stairs and Interact with the paper on the table to start another cutscene.

Collectible - Eviction Notice: Interact with the eviction notice again after the cutscene.

Collectible - Letter from Kat to Child Services: On the coffee table as you head toward the front door.

Go out the door and across the street to the lit wall. Shift In and use Dash to get through the shadow columns. When you reach a gap in the shadows, jump forward and Dash to reach the other side of the gap. Continue down the street to the circus tent.

Luminary: Inside the circus tent, to your left behind the curtain. Jump over the boxes near the exit from the tent.

There are three attractions that must be repaired: pirate ship, puppet show, and hot air balloon. You can repair them in any order. As you leave the circus tent and go down the flight of stairs, the attractions are arranged from left to right in the order already listed.

Luminary: At the bottom of the ramp coming out of the tent, go to the far left. A light will come on illuminating shadows on the wall. You must jump across the floating rocks, dashing from the second to the third, to reach a luminary on a doorstep.

A spirit from the vasty deep

Luminary: At the bottom of the stairs, looking toward "Tortuga's Revenge", to the left a shadow man is hammering a bell. Stand on the bell and wait for the highest hit (hits are in order low - medium - high). Time your jump for when the bell reaches its highest point and you'll easily reach a balcony with a luminary.

Enter Tortuga's Revenge.

Collectible - The Pirate Ship needs maintenance...: Interact with the mast to your left as you enter the ship.

Go down the ramp to your left and grab the box. Carry it up the ramp, Shift In to shadow and walk across the shadow to the ship. Drop the box (still in shadow) and jump on it. Jump up, Shifting Out as you do, and you'll grab the edge of the deck and you can pull yourself up. Interact with the switch to raise the boarding plank.

Jump down and grab the box you just used to get up (it will have Shifted Out of shadow) and carry it up the gangplank. Drop it on the floor switch to your right to open the first of three doors blocking the way ahead. To your left is another box. To your right is a wheelhouse. Enter the wheelhouse by Shifting In to shadow and walking through the glass. Interact with the helm and spin the wheel (press DOWN on the left stick) until it stops. When you release the wheel, it will start spinning clockwise.

Shift Out of the wheelhouse, run grab the second box, and Shift In with the box while standing on the left side of the wheel's shadow. Ride it around to the raised platform, Shift Out and drop the box on the second switch. You then need to jump down, run back to the left side of the wheel, Shift In and ride it up. As the spoke near you begins to go vertical, jump up on the end and jump up to a ledge along the left side of the ship. (If you're fast enough, you can do this without spinning the wheel again. But, if not, just go to the wheelhouse and spin it again.)


Ride the wheel up to a ledge

Luminary: There'a a third box up on the ledge. Before grabbing it, go to the other end of the ledge and jump across to the crow's nest and get a Luminary. Jump back to the ledge to get the box.

Pick up the third box that is on the ledge and jump down. Shift In to the wheelhouse while carrying the box and drop it on to the third switch. Didi will now enter the next room and get on the ride.

Luminary: Go through the door and turn right to pick up a luminary before getting on the ride.

Interact with the coaster car to ride it until it jams. Look to your right and find a ramp. Go up the ramp to where a cannonball rests in a clamp.

Trophy Alert: Halfway up the ramp, jump down into a pirate chest as it opens. This earns "No Backpack Bird Needed."

Interact with the switch to pick up the cannonball and send it firing at the rogue octopus tentacle. Go back down the ramp to where an octopus tentacle is moving up-and-down. Stand on the crates and wait for the shadow of the tentacle to come down. Jump up and Shift In and ride the tentacle up so you can jump over to the walkway to your left.

Luminary: After getting up to the walkway, jump over the rope and down into a dinghy to get a luminary. Then ride the octopus tentacle back up to the walkway.

Go past the cannonball and Interact with the door to open it. Grab the cannonball and walk out the door. Shift In to shadow and walk across the shadow of the rope. Shift Out at the next walkway, continue, then Shift In once past the brick walls. Drop the shadow of the cannonball under the shadow of the clamp. Shift Out and Interact with the switch to fire another round at the octopus. Interact with the car again to continue.


Carry the cannonball across the shadows

When the car stops again, go down the ramp to your left and grab a cannonball. Carry it up both ramps to the top level and around to the left-hand wall. Shift In while carrying the cannonball and drop it near the far end of the shadow wall, near the ledge. Return to the switch and raise the shadow wall (by lowering the car) until the part of the wall with the cannonball is level with the far ledge. Shift In and carry the cannonball to the ledge, Shift Out and drop it in the cannon.

Luminary: On the ledge with the cannon, just beyond the cannon.

Jump down to the lower floor and put three luminaries in the box by the door to open the door.

Luminary: As you follow Didi down the stairs, at the bottom of the first flight, turn and go behind the stairs to find a gap in the floor. Jump down and grab the luminary. Jump over the boxes to continue after Didi.

Luminary: After getting the previous luminary, when you first enter the large room, look for it on your right.

Collectible - Pirate Ship Maintenance Book: When you reach Didi, look for it to the left.

Didi will go toward the switch on the right. Go to the one on the left and wait for Didi to count down from three and then Interact with the switch to power the ride.

Unstrung Hero

From the pirate ship, head right toward the Chiaroscuro tent.

Luminary: In front of Chiaroscuro is a film reel icon floating in air. Step into it to activate shadows on the wall, then jump up them to a luminary on a balcony.

Enter Chiaroscuro. After the cutscene, jump up on stage and grab the princess hat. Shift In to shadow on the screen to begin a three-part tale. All of this part of the story takes place in the shadow world.

Ogre

After the cutscenes, run along, jumping over pits as necessary. When you reach the windmill, walk under the spinning vanes and then jump back to your left and ride a vane up to the tree on your right. After the windmill, you have to cross a river by jumping on the heads of four crocodiles.

Trophy Alert: You receive "Just Like Harry" if you make it across the crocodiles on your first try. Restart from last save if you fall in the water. Wait for the first crocodile to close its mouth, then jump and run from head to head quickly.

You'll then reach three magic mushrooms. Jump across them to the right-hand side and wait for all three to reset. Jump on the right-most mushroom and count five seconds. Jump on the middle mushroom, then jump up to the low tree branch to your right. Wait for it to carry you up, then jump up and a little to the right to reach the higher branch on the other side of the tree. Jump across to a tree-top.

When you reach the ogre, stand just to the left of the tree stump and wait for the ogre to begin its swing. Jump back and the ogre will stumple and fall to its knees. Jump over the ogre and stand next to the tree on the right. Wait for the ogre to stand, turn, and pull back its club. Jump to land on top of the clumb, then quickly jump back over the ogre and over the tree stump to avoid the falling tree. Jump on the tree to free Fred.

Spider

After the cutscenes, run to the right, watching out for a big chasm. Wait for Didi to suggest using an umbrella, then Shift Out and grab the umbrella from the box. Shift In and carefully float down through the cavern until you get stuck in a web. The umbrella cannot touch anything, or you'll fall to your doom.


Don't let the umbrella touch anything

Free yourself from the web by pressing Jump a few times, then run right. You'll run into two more webs. Break free from them, then drop down and turn left to hide under a ledge while a boulder rolls past. Continue to the right and you'll be chased by a giant spider. Run quickly, jumping as needed and trying to avoid the webs along the path. If you get stuck, rapidly press Jump to break free.

When you reach the stair-step section, jump quickly to the top and jump into the two large webs from which a boulder is suspended. Break the webs and the boulder drops on the spider. Make sure you're standing to the left to avoid the rockslide that accompanies the boulder. After the rockslide, continue to the right and break Fred free of his web.

Dragon

Run along watching for boulders coming down the mountain toward you. When you see the first one, turn and run back left and jump a gap to escape the boulder. When you reach a jump that's too high, stand on the little mound in front of it and wait for a geyser to lift you up. As you continue up the mountain, look for the geyers. You can stand on them to avoid falling rocks.

When you reach the dragon's cave, jump over the rocks under Fred and get near the dragon. As he roars, turn and jump back over the rocks to avoid his flame. Do this three times to free Fred and live happily ever after.

All the pretty horses

Leaving Chiaroscuro, go left up some stairs to a carousel. Put two luminaries into the control box to start the carousel.

Luminary: There's one in a dead-end alley beyond the carousel switch.

Find the point on the wall where the horse shadows come closest to the ground, Shift In and jump along the horses to a section of roof. You'll have to dash through a pole shadow as you jump along the horse shadows.


Ride the little horsies

Luminary: On the section of roof you reach after jumping up the horses.

Shift Out on the roof and jump toward the billboard, Shifting In as you do. Jump along some more horses until you reach a balcony. Stay in shadow across the balcony and Didi will hold up a shadow pole for you to jump across. You'll reach another roof section close to the top of the carousel.

Luminary: On top of the roof section you reach at the end of jumping across the horse shadows.

Jump over to the top of the carousel and Interact with the beacon. Jump back over to the nearby roof and ride the stars and comets upward. You'll have to dash-jump through moving pole shadows as you go. Make sure there's another star/comet shadow in front of you as you dash. You should reach a ledge over the billboard you crossed earlier. Cross the ledge and jump up to a balcony above you.

Luminary: On the balcony you jump to.

Go to the far end of the balcony and Shift In. Cross the flag banner shadow, watching for a spinning star. Wait for the star to go high enough for you to get under it, then dash through the star's handle and quickly cross to another section of roof. Jump to another roof section, then quickly Shift In and run along a flag-banner shadow, jumping over a spinning star. You want to reach the next section of roof before a double-spinning-star reaches you and blocks you from moving forward.

Trophy Alert: After reaching this balcony, go to your right to a rooftop cafe. Interact with an object on the table to receive "The Cyclops' Bottle."

Luminary: After getting the Bottle, look under the nearby metal stairs. There's a luminary on the section of roof under the stairs.

From the Cyclops' Bottle, go up the nearby stairs and along the roof to where the baloon is anchored on a chimney. Interact with it to untangle it and complete the repair of the attractions. Return to the circus tent to complete Act II.

Act III: The stuff that dreams are made of

Follow Didi through the nearby gate and up some stairs. After a brief cutscene, she'll want you to follow her to the clock tower to enter Vincenzo's Lab. Before you go in the tower, there are a few things to collect...

Luminary: From the stage where Didi asks for directions, go down the left-hand set of steps and go left along the street. After passing under an arch, look to the right to see a luminary among some cafe tables.

Luminary: From the previous luminary, go across the street and up some stairs. Go all the way down the street at the top of the stairs to find a luminary.

Luminary: From that luminary, turn around and go back toward the clock tower, but look for an opening in the wall to the left. Go down the stairs and turn left to pick up a luminary.

Luminary: From the last luminary, turn around and go back toward the clock tower. As you exit the alley, turn left and walk through the floating gun icon. A scene plays on the wall. Go to the right of the sign, Shift In and jump on the shadow of the sign, then up on Kat's head, then on Johnny's head. From Johnny's head, leap up toward a balcony and Shift Out to grab the edge and pull yourself up to the luminary.

Turn a blind eye

That's all the luminaries for this Act. Go over to Didi waiting at the clock tower entrance. After the cutscene, place two luminaries into the Solar Machine to power it up. Interact with the Solar Machine and spin it clockwise until a planet with a spike from it is positioned to the upper right with the spike slanted down to the floor.


Set the Solar Machine like this

Run around to your left and pick up a ball. Carry it over to the spiked planet, Shift In to shadow and drop the shadow ball at the base of the spike, where it joins the planet. Quickly Shift Out and run to the Solar Machine control before the ball rolls off the spike. Spin the planets clockwise so the ball is carried up to the balcony to the right.

Go through the door to your right and jump up the broken staircase. Grab the ball from the balcony and place it in the receptacle. Run back down to the floor and go to the right where a bell arm shadow is moving up and down. Shift In and stand to the right of the arm and jump up on it as it lowers. Run up it and jump to the drum head (you may have to wait for it to cycle back up) and then to the cymbal and then to the balcony and down the stairs.

Collectible - Science Picture: On the floor behind the glass cases to your left as you come down the stairs.

Interact with the light cart and move it over to the left and close to the glass dome so the shadows of the gears are above the stairs and some shadow bars are along the wall to the left. Jump into the gears and carefully ride through them by lining yourself up with a gap in the upper gear. Jump along the shadows on the wall, jump-dashing as necessary, to reach the Solar Machine Elevation Reset and Interact with it.


Get in gear

After the cutscene, cross through to the other side of the room and jump on the shadow of the glass on the right wall. Wait for the janitor to move toward you and then turn away. Jump on his back and ride across to a balcony and go down the stairs.

Collectible - Science Picture: On the wall at the bottom of the stairs.

In this room, Interact with the two sets of double doors to open a way back in case you miss a jump. Go up the curved staircase and open a door out onto a balcony overlooking the Solar machine. Shift In to the shadows to your left and jump-dash your way around to the open clock face. Jump through after Didi.

Collectible - Newspaper Article: Illusionist Cancels Shows: On the floor to your left right after jumping through the clock face.

Go around the machinery to start a cutscene. After the scene, you're back out on the street. Go left to the stage and wait for the fireworks.

The beginning of a beautiful friendship

Leave the stage to the left and then bear right down the street to the lighthouse. After Didi starts the lighthouse up, Shift In to get through the right-side glass of the door. Interact with the switch on the left wall to start up the light. Interact with the spotlight and shine it on the box on the small platform opposite. Jump over to the box and Shift In to shadow. Drop the shadow box, Shift Out and return to the spotlight. Move the spotlight with the box inside over to the left and drop it on the floor once you've cleared the gaps in the floor.


Light transport

Move the light back to the right until it locks onto the sparkling globe. Run over, get the box, and drop it on a floor switch in the back left corner of the room. Go up the ramp that drops and wait for the moving light to reach you. Shfit In to the light and follow it to a platform. Shift Out, grab the box, then Shift In to the light and follow it to a second platform. Shift Out and drop the box on the floor switch. Jump back down to the main floor, go back up the ramp and then up the second ramp that just dropped. Run around the catwalks and Interact with the switch.

A ramp drops when you press the switch. At the top is a room with a column in the middle and a switch at the base of the column.

Collectible - Lecture By Dr. William James: On the floor to the left of the column.

Collectible - Newspaper Article: Missing Illusionist Sought In Affair of Missing Assistant: On a box to the right of the column.

When you Interact with the switch at the base of the column, shutters will briefly open, allowing a shadow path along the wall. You'll need to quickly run up the stairs to your left, Shift In, then run-dash through the shutters before they close. After the last shutter, jump up to the next floor level.

Collectible - Picture depicting the shadow dimension's effect on the world: On a box to the right of the stairs leading up.

Go up the stairs to find a column with two light poles projecting from it.

Collectible - Picture projecting skeleton to a shadow and Collectible - Science Picture: Both collectibles are located on this floor behind the column.

Interact with the pole closest to the stairs. A pair of gear shadows are projected on the wall. Jump up on the boxes nearby and Shift In to shadow and climb either gear. The left-hand path is a little easier. Regardless of which way you go, you'll be jumping against the gears.

Collectible - Picture of Vincenzo & Dawn: On an easel on the right side of the upper floor. If you go up the left-hand gears, you'll be right in front of it. If you go up the right-hand gears you'll have to walk around to it.

Go outside the lighthouse and head left, jumping down the platforms to the lowest level. Grab the box from in front of the doors and carry it to the wall opposite. Go back inside the lighthouse where you'll find yourself on the lower level with the column with two light poles. Interact with the pole closest to the doors. Go back outside to find a spotlight lit and shining on the wall. Grab the box, Shift In to shadow and drop the shadow box.

Shift Out and Interact with the spotlight. Press the appropriate button (L2 on PS4) to focus the spotlight into a small spot centered on the box. Carfully move the box up and to the left and then right and drop it on the catwalk above. Then move the focused spotlight so it locks on the sparkling ball to the right.


Heavy lifting

Jump up to the platform to your left and walk up the ramp to grab the box. Place it in shadow near the rotating wall. Shift Out and Interact with the spotlight that's shining on it. Focus the beam and get ready to quickly move the box across the rotating wall. Once past the rotating wall, carefully lower the box to the walkway and lower the light until the box Shifts Out of shadow.

If at any time you lose the box and it floats off into space your only option may be to start from last save, which is all the way back at the bottom of the lighthouse. BE CAREFUL WITH THE BOX!

Once the box is safe, focus the spotlight on the sparkling ball at the upper right of the broken wall until it locks into place. Jump up to the platform to your left, grab the box, and drop it on the floor switch near where you left the upper floor of the lighthouse.

Go to the shadows on the broken wall opposite and jump out to the wall and Shift In to shadow. Jump up the pipes to the left. Wait for the rotating beam to be angled down, then jump-dash to it and run over to the stairs. Shift Out and go up the stairs.


Wait for the right angle

From here you'll use all the skills you've learned thus far to zig-zag your way up the outside of the lighthouse. You'll jump, jump-dash, jump and Shift, etc. When you reach the top, a wall will fall in and you'll jump across a jumble of game-related objects (furniture, boxes, etc.) and then you'll be at the top of the lighthouse. Go over and Interact with the light switch to turn on the lighthouse, then move the beam down and a little right to focus on the stage.

We'll always have Paris

That's it! With the exception of watching a few cutscenes and following Didi around a little (no more Shifting or jumping), you're done with the game. Do make sure you watch all the way until the credits start rolling so you earn your final trophy.

Act III

Note: Unlike the other Acts, you collect these items in a different order than which they are listed in your collection index. The order here is the order in which you pick them up.

Science Picture: In the Clock Tower, after passing through the music room, go down the stairs and jump behind the glass cases to your left.

Science Picture: After riding the janitor's shadow to a balcony, go down the stairs and this is on the wall at the bottom.

Newspaper Article: Illusionist Cancels Shows: On the floor to your left right after jumping through the clock face.

Act I

  1. Directly in your path as you go through the room at the top of the alley.
  2. After getting the previous luminary, go down the stairs and then over to your left to the shadow of a bicycle. Ride the wheel around and jump to a balcony with the luminary.
  3. Go a little further down the street from 'Dirty' and find the phonograph icon floating in the street. Step into it to activate shadows on the wall to your right. Quickly climb up the shadows to reach the luminary on the balcony.
  4. Go to the phonograph icon you used and to your left is a wooden wall. Break through to collect a luminary.
  5. There's one waiting for you as you cross over to the second catwalk going around the Jazzclub.
  6. There's one in the far right end of the Manager's office.
  7. After you leave the theater, you are in a courtyard with two umbrellas you can Interact with. Facing the cinema, Interact with the right-hand umbrella to fold it, count five to seven seconds, then Interact with the left-hand umbrella. Quickly go to the back wall, Shift In to shadows and jump up on a chair shadow to the right and wait for the right-hand umbrella to pop up and then jump on top of it. Move left and stand on the shadow next to the left-hand umbrella's pole. As the umbrella starts to unfold, jump and it will carry you up and you can cross to the luminary on a balcony.
  8. Before going up to the Excelsior, head to the left and walk through the gold microphone icon floating in the street. Use the shadow of Kat that plays on the wall to get up to a luminary on a balcony. First jump up to Kat's back and Shift In to shadow, then jump right on to her head and then jump on her feet as they come close and ride them over to the balcony.
  9. At the bottom of the stairs back to the second floor of the Excelsior.
  10. On top of the last chandelier you reach as you climb to the fifth floor of the Excelsior.

Act II

  1. Inside the circus tent, to your left behind the curtain. Jump over the boxes near the exit from the tent.
  2. At the bottom of the ramp coming out of the tent, go to the far left. A light will come on illuminating shadows on the wall. You must jump across the floating rocks, dashing from the second to the third, to reach a luminary on a doorstep.
  3. At the bottom of the stairs, looking toward "Tortuga's Revenge", to the left a shadow man is hammering a bell. Stand on the bell and wait for the highest hit (hits are in order low - medium - high). Time your jump for when the bell reaches its highest point and you'll easily reach a balcony with a luminary.
  4. In the pirate ship, ride the wheel's shadow up to a ledge and jump across to the crow's nest and get a luminary.
  5. After opening the three doors in the pirate ship, go through and turn right to pick up a luminary before getting on the ride.
  6. After firing the cannon once in the whirlpool of the pirate ship, jump up to the walkway, then jump over the rope and down into a dinghy to get a luminary. Then ride the octopus tentacle back up to the walkway.
  7. When firing the final shot at the octopus, there's a luminary just past the cannon.
  8. As you follow Didi down the stairs, at the bottom of the first flight, turn and go behind the stairs to find a gap in the floor. Jump down and grab the luminary. Jump over the boxes to continue after Didi.
  9. After getting the previous luminary, when you first enter the large room, look for it on your right.
  10. In front of Chiaroscuro is a film reel icon floating in air. Step into it to activate shadows on the wall, then jump up them to a luminary on a balcony.
  11. There's a luminary in a dead-end alley beyond the switch that powers the carousel.
  12. As you jump across the horses, there's a luminary on the first section of roof you reach.
  13. And another on the second section of roof.
  14. As you advance up the stars and comets, there's a luminary in your path on a balcony.
  15. After getting the Cyclops' Bottle, look under the metal stairs that lead to the balloon. There's a luminary on the section of roof below the stairs.

Act III

  1. From the stage where Didi asks for directions, go down the left-hand set of steps and go left along the street. After passing under an arch, look to the right to see a luminary among some cafe tables.
  2. From the previous luminary, go across the street and up some stairs. Go all the way down the street at the top of the stairs to find a luminary.
  3. From that luminary, turn around and go back toward the clock tower, but look for an opening in the wall to the left. Go down the stairs and turn left to pick up a luminary.
  4. From the last luminary, turn around and go back toward the clock tower. As you exit the alley, turn left and walk through the floating gun icon. A scene plays on the wall. Go to the right of the sign, Shift In and jump on the shadow of the sign, then up on Kat's head, then on Johnny's head. From Johnny's head, leap up toward a balcony and Shift Out to grab the edge and pull yourself up to the luminary.

Trophies are listed in the order they appear on the PlayStation 4 system. All trophies are bronze; there are no silver, gold, or platinum trophies awarded for this game.

  • To The Heroes Among Us - Awarded when you play the "Extra Life 2012" credits in a secret room in Act I. See the Walkthrough under "Of all the gin joints..."
  • A Carousel of Broken Dreams - Awarded at the end of Act I.
  • A New Dimension - Awarded the first time you shift into shadow.
  • The Cyclops' Bottle - Awarded for finding the Cyclops' Bottle while repairing the hot air baloon attraction in Act II. See the Walkthrough under "All the pretty horses."
  • FIN - Awarded when you complete the game.
  • GroundsKeeper - Awarded for finding all collectibles in Act II. See the Walkthrough or the Collectibles section of this guide.
  • Handy Person - Awarded when you repair all three attractions in Act II.
  • How'd You Get In? - Awarded when the player enters Vincenzo's Workshop in Act III.
  • Illuminated - Awarded when you collect two luminaries.
  • Just Like Harry - Successfully cross the crocodiles on your first attempt while playing the princess in the Shadow Theater. If you fail, restart from last save and try again. See the walkthrough under "Unstrung Hero."
  • Let There Be Light - Awarded when you restart the Lighthouse in Act III.

  • Now That's Thinking With Shadows - Awarded if you cross the billboards to the cinema successfully on your first attempt. If you die the first time, restart from last save and try again. See the Walkthrough under "The usual suspects."
  • My God, It's Full Of Stars! - Awarded for falling while trying to cross the billboards to get to the cinema. If you are successful the first time, restart from last save and deliberately fall to your death. See the Walkthrough under "The usual suspects."
