Persona 2: Innocent Sin Spoiler-Free FAQ/Walkthrough

History

10/12/2011: After reading several other FAQs for this game, I decided I'd replay it as a speedrun and write a beginning-to-end guide with a strong strategy focus.

10/20/2011: First version of finished FAQ/Walkthrough.

10/21/2011: Added an end-game strategy to gain EXP and money quickly, made several small corrections.

Introduction

One of my biggest issues with Persona 2 was that it's very easy to get spend too much time grinding and experimenting in the battles if you don't know what you're doing. This spoiler-free walkthrough is written to address that issue by giving effective strategy for getting through the dungeons and battles with minimal grind, guiding you through the full story experience with as little hassle as possible.

The walkthrough is consistent, so if you've been following it from the start you should be able to do everything I ask you to. The strategy is cumulative, so earlier actions affect later strategies. For anyone who's started reading this in the middle of a game, search (CTRL+F) "useful personas" or click the link in the Table of Contents, and make the listed Personas up to your highest character's level +5. This is usually enough to jump in and start using the suggested strategies.

Sidequests have their own section to be referred to throughout the game if you want to do them. None of them are required to beat the game, and I don't require you to do any in the walkthrough.

I'll explain the most important controls (and so will the game), but I still recommend reading the manual. Check the gameplay section of this guide for additional help with menus and the Persona/battle systems.

Walkthrough

Start by watching the intros (there are two), then choose "Data Install" at the bottom. This will cut down on a lot of loading times. Now start a New Game. Pick a difficulty level. The only difference is how much damage you take during battle. Note that you can change it at any time from the main menu in the game. I suggest picking Normal or Easy. This guide is written for the Hard difficulty just to be safe.

Seven Sisters High

Name the main character. He'll be called Tatsuya in this guide. After the scene, enter the building.

Before we do anything else, open the menu and check your settings. Here you can toggle the message speed, music, and difficulty. I recommend setting Cursor Memory to ON, and make sure Data Install is ON too. Also note that you can save from the menu at almost any time during the game (except certain events and event rooms). Save often. Use at least two save files and save in a different slot for each session in case something goes horribly wrong.

Tatsuya is looking for Ms. Saeko, so talk to people and follow the leads until they lead back to the Bike Racks. Talk to the boy on the first floor, then the girl on 2F, then the boy on 3F, then twice to Ms. Ideal in the Courtyard (behind 1F boy), then 1F boy again, and then out to the Bike Rack.

As you find your way around the school, note that you can rotate the screen with the shoulder buttons. Every time you enter a new area, it's best to rotate the screen so the minimap icon and Tatsuya move in the same direction, and the compass faces N at the top (you can do this instantly by pressing L+R at the same time). You can also access the full map with the Square button in case you get lost.

Now at the Bike Racks with Ms. Saeko. It doesn't matter what you say.

Next up, Sumaru Prison.

Sumaru Prison

Note that Michel is pronounced "me-shell" (closer to Michelle than Michael).

Watch the scene, then walk to the stairs to trigger a scene, then walk up the stairs and leave.

Hirasaka

Now you're free to wander.

At this point, I'd like to mention that Persona 2 has a ton of NPC dialogue, and all of it changes after most scene or battle events. I won't mention any of it in this guide, just what you need to do to progress in the story.

Press Square to display the location names. Head left and up to Kameya Alley, then enter Shiraishi Ramen for a scene. Leave and enter Kuzunoha Detective Agency and Chief Todoroki will offer to spread the rumor for you. Talk to him and choose to spread the rumor. Leave and return to Shiraishi Ramen (note the new sword symbol on the selection screen), and you'll receive your first set of weapons. Leave and head to any exit on the edge of Hirasaka, then select Rengedai from the map screen.

Rengedai

Go to Seven Sisters High.

Seven Sisters High

Watch the scene. Welcome to the first dungeon.

Contact example: Tatsuya 4 means Tatsuya's 4th contact option from the top (Death Stare), and Michel+Maya means to select both Michel and Maya for a group contact.

Walk around and fight some battles with the demons listed above. Use the fusion spells Hydro Boost (Agi-Magna-Aques), Towering Inferno (Aques-Magna-Agi), Earth Slice EX (Magna-Straight Slash), and Flame Cut EX (Agi-Straight Slash) to easily defeat the demons.

IMPORTANT: For Tatsuya's level up bonuses, maintain a 1:3 ratio between Vt and Dx, so Dx is three times as much as Vt. When Dx reaches 99, Vt should be around 33.

The caretaker in the NW corner of 1F can heal your party if you need it. It's good to cure poison this way if you don't have Antidotes.

Some notes on battle mechanics. You can press Start to toggle the animations on and off. Fusion spells are set to Standby by default, but if you go into the battle menu you can change them to Auto to skip the prompt (or Off if a fusion spell you don't want is happening automatically). You can set turn order (this is often necessary to learn new fusion spells). Pressing Triangle will start auto battle, and pressing O will interrupt it right before your next character's turn.

When you interrupt battle, you can change your character's commands. This is effective if you need to heal, guard, or change your Personas. In fact, there's a very useful trick you can use to effectively attack and defend at the same time. Interrupt the battle with O before your last character's turn before the demons attack, then give all your party members commands to guard. This will cut damage by 3/4. Then, interrupt again before they pass their turns and give them attack commands. If you're taking too much damage during battles, you can use this trick to stay alive.

Train until level 3, then start negotiating with demons. Make one happy first to make a pact (the negotiating character has to be at least the demon's level to make a pact), then make it eager for tarot cards and free cards. Get 8 combined Lovers and free cards (negotiate with a Pixie twice), then leave the dungeon for the Rengedai map and head to the Velvet Room at Lotus.

Velvet Room

You can make new Personas here. Get 8 Lovers cards from the Demon Painter, then talk to Igor and choose "Summon Persona" and make a Pixie (LV2 Lovers x8). Talk to Igor again and choose "Take On Persona" and put it in a blank slot in your party's list. Then, open your menu and choose "Persona" -> "Tatsuya" and give him the Pixie. Return to Seven Sisters High with your new Pixie Persona.

REMINDER

Don't forget to take on new Personas to put them in your party's stock. When you switch a Persona into your party, be sure to put it into a blank slot so the old ones stay in your party's stock. If you forget to put a Persona in your party's stock or you accidentally send a Persona to Igor's stock, you might have to backtrack out of a dungeon to get it if I ask you to use it.

Seven Sisters High

Make Tatsuya go first and use Dia so Pixie can get to rank 2 and learn Garu. Now you can use the fusion spells Kamaitaichi (Water-Earth-Wind) and Wind Slash EX (Wind-Straight Slash).

Now go to 3F left wing (Principal's Office) for a scene. New party members means new strategy. Change Tatsuya's Persona back to Vulcanus, and give Pixie to Ginko. Use Agi-Garu-Agi to learn Mega Blaze, which can attack all enemies. Set the turn order so Maya and Michel attack first with skills (for Persona experience) before Mega Blaze defeats the enemies.

Your mission is to destroy all the clocks. Break one clock each in rooms 3-B, 3-D, 2-C, 2-B, 1-A, 1-C, and 1-D. Next, go to the Teacher's Lounge (2F left wing) and break all three clocks there. Talk to Mr. Aishi (green suit) to learn the janitor has a key, then head to the 1F Janitor's Room for a scene. Talk to your party members for another scene where you get the key.

Heal, save, and head for the 4F Clock Tower. There's a boss coming up, so save before you enter the clock tower door. My party was at LV 5.

Just use Mega Blaze or Blazing Burst (Agi-Agi) and he'll die in a few turns. Use Maya and Michel to heal if you need it.

After the battle and scene, a student asks what happened and you get to make a dialogue choice. It won't change anything important either way, but say "No, he made it." for some funny scenes later. Now leave the school and exit Rengedai to see a new area on the map, Yumezaki.

Yumezaki

Go to Yumezaki Center and select Peace Diner for a scene. Next, go to Satomi Tadashi and buy 5 Rattle Drinks, 1 Chewing Soul, 1 Revival Bead, and 5 of each status healing item (Antidote, Tranquilizer, Energy Drink, Ohnusa) for emergencies. Now head to Zodiac.

Zodiac

Enter Club Zodiac in the back for a scene, then go in the back door to start a new dungeon. Michel is unavailable for battle until the dungeon is completed.

Nothing here resists fire, so continue to use Mega Blaze to win battles quickly.

From now on, when I say to hug the left wall, that means to follow the wall on Tatsuya's left (when his back faces the entrance). Just pretend Tatsuya has his left hand on the wall and is walking along it, turning as the wall turns.

1F

Press L+R to orient the map so Tatsuya and the minimap marker move in the same direction (compass faces N). Now hug the left wall until you get to the stairs.

2F

Hug the left wall until you reach the stairs. The room near the stairs is a Trish's Spring, where you can heal yourself by paying a ton of money, so don't. Your characters fully heal upon level up, anyway.

3F

Hug the left wall and enter the second room on the E side of the map. Inspect the box in the lower left corner for the STRANGE MASK. You can also talk to Yukino here and say "Yeah" for a new group contact. Save and enter the first room (to the N) for a scene and boss battle. My party was LV 7 at this point, with the same setup as the last dungeon.

IMPORTANT: During the scene, choose "Wait and see what happens." or you'll miss a strong Persona later.

If you want, you can get a group contact between Tatsuya and Michel. Go to room 1-2 and talk to Michel, and say Tatsuya is cooler (top choice).

Head to the left side of 1F and take the stairs up to go to the 2F Student Council Room. Talk to Michel for a scene, then to the students next to him. Exit right up the stairs to 3F and enter room 3-1, and again talk to Michel and the students. Now go downstairs to 2F and across to room 2-4, and again talk to Michel and the students.

Room 1

After the scene, enter the top door.

Hug the left wall, but rotate the camera so you can see the top wall as you walk along it. Enter a hole to a dead end with a POSUMUDI CARD. Continue to the next room.

Room 2

Enter the bottom door.

Room 1

And out to the next hallway.

Hall 1

This time, hug the right wall to get the rest of the items. You'll find a fiery dead end with an AQUES CARD. Go through the door and the second room again.

Hall 2

Hug the right hall to find a Trish's Spring and a hole with a KOTOLUDI CARD, then continue to the door.

Room 1

You've gotta do one more lap. Go through the two halls again.

Room 1

This time you get forced into several scenes. When prompted, pick the correct dialogue choices.

1st prompt: top ("You don't know where the exit is.")
2nd prompt: bottom ("There was one person.")
3rd prompt: bottom ("A mirror.")
4th prompt: top ("Everything in range.")
5th prompt: bottom ("You can see things indirectly.")

Making these choices unlocks a contact between Tatsuya and Maya.

Kasugayama High (Part 2)

Before we continue, train your party to level 10 and get 60 Chariot cards from the Ogres if you didn't already. You can check how many cards you have from the items menu ("Items" -> "Cards" -> "Tarot").

Leave the dungeon for the Velvet Room.

Velvet Room

Summon Minotaur (LV 15 Chariot x60). Put it in your party stock and equip it to Michel. This gives you access to the fusion spell Pegasus Strike (Wind-Sonic Punch), which comes in handy later. Continue using Mega Blaze for now, but have Michel attack first with Sonic Punch to gain Persona ranks.

Return to the school, and head to the left wing of 1F and enter the gym.

Spreading Rumors

When you regain control, head to the following locations and hear six rumors from each rumormonger there (two from the Genie).

Hirasaka: Gatten Sushi (Toro)

When you make small talk, Toro tells you to go see Chikarin at Peace Diner.

Yumezaki: Peace Diner (Chikarin)

Chikarin tells you to go to the fortuneteller in Kounan (new area unlocked). From now on, you can go to the Abandoned Factory in Kounan whenever you need to get cards or train.

Kounan: Seaside Mall: Sumaru Genie (Genie)

The Genie tells you to see Toku at Honmaru Park.

Rengedai: Honmaru Park (Toku)

After a scene, Toku sends you back to Toro. No help at all, old man.

Now head to the Kuzunoha Detective Agency in Hirasaka.

Kuzunoha Detective Agency

Talking to Chief Todoroki will trigger a scene.

Now's a good time to spread rumors. Here are the ones used during this walkthrough. You can't take back rumors, so be careful.

Shopping

Now's a good time to do some shopping with all that money (if Robin Goodfellow didn't steal it all). Here's what I bought at Yumezaki with the above rumors spread. If you sell equipment to fund your purchases, don't sell it at Anima Mundi because of the reduced buyback prices rumor.

Total: 46860 Yen

If you're short on money, give priority to Michel's weapon, then items, then armor. Pegasus Strike's power is based off the ATK stat, so it's important for the user (Michel in this case) to be well-equipped.

Equip your party and head to Mu at Yumezaki for a scene, then enter the back doors for a new dungeon.

Instead, just contact it for cards, so you won't have to manually change your battle setup for the next random battle.

Exit the Boxing Gym. Hug right and enter the supply closet for a scene. Exit and continue to hug right past an AG INCENSE in the men's dressing room, 50000 YEN in the women's dressing room, then the stairs to 2F.

2F

Hug left for two more rooms. Enter the supply closet to trigger a scene. Exit and continue to hug left to the stairs (skip the treadmill room, it's a dead end). Go up to 3F.

3F

Hug left past a Trish's Spring, an ALL CARD and a MEDIARAMA CARD from the dressing rooms, then enter the second room (Men's Staff Room) for a scene and another RIDDLE. Backtrack to the 1F Boxing Gym (where you started from) for a scene that ends the dungeon.

Save your game now (you can't save during the next dungeon), then head to the Aerospace Museum in Kounan.

You're on a 10-minute hallway time limit for this dungeon, so open the menu when you're in the halls if you need to stop the timer.

1F

Follow the halls NW and take the stairs to 2F.

2F

Hug right, and enter the third exhibit room from the SW corner to save some kids. Continue to the Catwalk Anteroom.

IMPORTANT: When prompted, choose the bottom choice, "Leave this to Maya", so she jumps down to rescue the girl. If you pick the other choice you miss out on a powerful Persona later.

Continue to the next door.

2F

Take the stairs.

3F

Hug left past an empty exhibit room, Trish's Spring, a second exhibit room (enter it to save more kids), and a dead end with a LU INCENSE in a broken case. Continue hugging left past the stairs, an empty exhibit room, a corridor to another dead end with a TRUE FORCE for Michel, and an exhibit room in the lower right corner (enter it to save more kids). After rescuing both sets of kids Tamaki will have moved, so backtrack and take the stairs up to 4F.

4F

After the scene, hug left from the 3F stairs (N from your current position). You'll pass an exhibit room in the NE corner. Enter it to save more kids. Continue past a broken display in a corner with a MIRACLE EGG, the empty SE exhibit room, Tadashi blocking the stairs, and the SW exhibit room. Enter it to save the last batch of kids (Tadashi goes away), then return to the stairs and continue to 5F.

5F

Heal, then enter the roof door for a scene (yes, Leo is a jerk, and no, his real name is slightly different from Tatsuya's). Then, exit the blimp for a boss battle.

If you were lucky enough to learn Minotaur's Tackle from a fusion mutation, use Pixie's Zio then Minotaur's Tackle to end the battle very quickly with the powerful Dashing Strike fusion spell.

When you regain control, head for the detective agency in Hirasaka for an interesting scene. When you're done talking, head for Alaya Shrine in Rengedai for another scene.

  • CAUTION: Picollus uses Hula of Misfortune, so when you fight him contact a demon right away to end the battle quickly.

IMPORTANT: Get all four mask key items from this dungeon.

B1F

Head up and enter the room for a scene, then continue.

B1F

Hug the right wall for HP INCENSE and exit to a Reflecting Pool.

Reflecting Pool 1

After the scene, take the exit closer to Yukino and Michel. The map disappears in these rooms, so face an exit and press Square to confirm you're going in the right direction.

Reflecting Pool 2

B1F

Hug left for a secret room in SE corner with the YELLOW OWL MASK. Continue, but before you take the stairs down enter the nearby secret room for the RED EAGLE MASK.

B2F

Hug left into a secret path on the E wall, then past a Trish's Spring, then into another secret path on the N wall. There are pits in this next room that lead to a dead end room on B3F with five more pathetic treasures and stairs back up to B2F. If you walk directly against the left wall you'll fall down a pit.

B3F

Hug left for REVIVAL BEAD x2 and a secret room with some dialogue. Continue to the stairs to B4F.

B4F

Hug left for an OGRE HAND in a corner. Before you continue, fight until you have at least 124 Magician cards (contact Agrippa with Tatsuya 1) and 112 Hermit cards (Cwn Annwn with Michel 2). Enter a hidden path on the N wall. Save your game and heal before you continue to the next reflecting pool.

You start off with half HP on all characters but Maya. Use the guard trick if the boss goes first (select guard for all characters, then switch to normal tactics after the boss attacks).

Cure poison with an Antidote. You may have to restart if the boss gets too lucky with Mahama and Diamond Dust.

Pegasus Strike is enough to finish the boss, but you need to keep your party alive for several turns. She can use Diamond Dust, a strong ice attack that hits all party members, so switch Tatsuya's Persona away from Vulcanus. If a party member gets KO'd, immediately use a Revival Bead then a Rattle Drink.

At this point, Philemon will grant you upgraded Personas depending on choices you made earlier in the game:

At this point, the shops in Lotus (Rengedai) have the strongest (and most expensive) weapons and armor. I had about 300,000 Yen at this point, not even enough to buy a full set of armor from Rosa Candida, so I didn't. Buy Michel the new weapon from Time Castle, TOP SCRAMBLE, then buy a lot of these items from Satomi Tadashi.

Set up your party with Personas as follows. Put Vulcanus, Rhadamanthus, Eros, and Maia in the Velvet Stock but keep the others in the party's inventory for later use.

MichelMars25Justice x75 (make from free cards)

MayaMaia Prime
YukinoGullinbursti28Hermit x112
  • Agrippa gives you easy access to the fusion spells Low-End Breaker (Zanma-Hama) and Salamander (fire-Summon Spirits).

To get free cards, go to room 4 on 2F of the Abandoned Factory in Kounan. The enemies are all from past dungeons. Try to gather at least 159 and up to 366 free cards, 84 for Marduk, 75 for Mars, 102 for Sif (which we'll make later), and 105 for Nezha (which we'll make later). You can also encounter Nezha in room 4, and beating it will get you the Pao-Pei material card, which we'll use later.

If you didn't get the prime Personas, use Tensen Nyannyan (LV27 Priestess x81) on Maya instead of Maia Prime, and make another fire Persona with Maragion (like another Marduk) after I tell you to return Marduk and swap for Vulcanus Prime.

Also, if you want a Persona with Estoma but don't have Budai, you can make Nemesis (LV 24 Empress x72) and use it on Yukino until it learns Estoma. You can also find an Estoma Card in an upcoming dungeon. You shouldn't need Estoma if you're following this guide to the letter, but it helps if you're going out of your way to train.

Make sure you have a lot of Chewing Soul items. Those Prime Personas eat up a lot of SP. Revival Beads and Rattle Drinks are also very helpful.

When you're done, exit the current district and select Mt. Katatsumuri from the map, then enter the mountain entrance. Save and heal before you enter, because it's pretty tough at the beginning.

Mt. Katatsumuri Entrance

You're given a choice. Depending on what you pick, you'll go a different route. The direct path has harder battles, and the indirect path has a more difficult map. I recommend selecting "Bust right through." for the direct path. The forest path is easy to get lost in.

The battles are a little tougher at the start since we just got a bunch of new Personas. Use Rattle Drinks or switch to Pixie if you need to heal, until Maia Prime learns Mediarama at rank 6, then use that. Use Chewing Souls to recover SP out of battle. If you're taking too much damage in battle, use the guard trick.

Start with this setup. Marduk learns Agilao at rank 2, so use Flame Cut until he ranks up. Slowpoke Michel is first, so use the guard trick at the start of each battle.

Mt. Katatsumuri Direct Path

The direct path starts with a difficult forced battle. Attack with Blazing Burst (or briefly switch back to Fjalar for Mega Blaze) and have a free character do the guard trick if necessary (press O to interrupt battle, assign guard to all characters, then during the enemy's turn press O and reassign attack orders. This is very handy if you ever get stuck in a hard battle.). You may fight these guys again as random enemies, so just use the same strategy until you learn stronger moves.

so go back the way you came (N) to go to the next area.

Area 5

"These are the silent words of deep love"

so head S and exit.

Area 6

Hug right. The SW sign says

"Beyond the wordless guardian deities
The distant forest shall open"

so take the W exit.

Area 6

Grab Miracle EGG x3 and take the W exit to leave the maze.

Area 7

Areas 1-3

Closely hug the left wall through all three areas. You'll pass a Trish's Spring in Area 3.

Area 4

Hug left to find a RECARM CARD. Stop to heal and save, then continue up the stairs to the summit.

Fight with Maya or Ginko: #11
Fight with Eikichi or Yukino: #12
BOSS

Weak: Fire (#13), Earth (#12), Water (#11)
Party LV: 31

These enemies heavily resist physical attacks, so attack with non-physical skills. If a character gets speared, have them guard until the effect wears off. Heal with Rattle Drinks if needed.

IMPORTANT: After the battle, pick the top choice, "You'd deny his last request...?" and Yukino will immediately get the Durga Persona.

If you picked the other choice, you don't get Durga, Yukino leaves the party for the next dungeon, and you get a slightly different scenario.

After the scene, you can turn right on the path to leave the dungeon and ride the cable car down, or continue into the temple for the next dungeon. For now, let's leave the mountain for some upgrades.

Before Caracol (Upgrades)

You may have noticed that Michel's low Ag is dragging your party's turns down in battle. Fortunately, we can get an Agility Source by returning a MAX rank Marduk. You'll also want to get the Pao-Pei material card from Nezha in Room 4. If you haven't fought him yet, use Estoma if Tatsuya is between levels 28 and 35, and the first battle will be against Nezha. Also get 207 free cards if you don't already have them. We're almost done training for the rest of the game. When you have all that and if Marduk and Mars are rank 8, head to the Velvet Room.

Velvet Room

First, remove Marduk and Mars from Tatsuya and Michel. Both should be MAX rank, so talk to Igor, choose "Return Persona" and return Marduk for Agility Source and Mars for Strength Source. Equip Agility Source to Michel, and Strength Source to Ginko.

Now make the following Persona setup:

CharacterPersonaLevelCards

  • If you somehow screw up making Nezha, make Taranis (LV 27 Chariot x108) instead, and train it to rank 8 for Tackle, and keep Minotaur in your party for later.
  • If you don't have Vulcanus Prime, just make another Persona with Agilao (like another Marduk).

When Nezha reaches rank 6 it will learn Tackle. This lets you use a very powerful fusion spell, Dashing Strike (Zio-Tackle). Dashing Strike is based off the caster's ATK, so make sure Michel has a strong weapon. Also, make sure you have plenty of Chewing Souls to fuel your skills (you're good if you bought 99 earlier).

When you're ready, take the cable car back to the summit, then enter Caracol.

These enemies do a lot of damage, so bunch your turns together and use the guard trick (especially if Maya gets stunned or speared). If a character gets speared, have them guard or use items (Chewing Souls can replenish SP). You can also use fusion spells Salamander (fire-Summon Spirits), Sylph (wind-Summon Spirits), and Gnome (earth-Summon Spirits) to attack their weaknesses.

It's helpful to set turn order so a speared party member initiates the guard trick. That way the trick won't waste a live turn.

If you made it to this point without Yukino, you get a different boss battle instead. They're more vulnerable to Dashing Strike, so use that to end the battle quickly. If Yukino had Sif, Ginko can use Pixie and Maya can use Agrippa so you can use the same attack setup of Salamander/Blazing Burst and Dashing Strike.

From now on, contact demons and make them eager to end the battles if the battles get too tricky.
