"Great story hindered by horrendous gameplay"

Back in the year 1997, a certain Japanese role-playing game hit the Playstation and took the gaming community by storm. This game Final Fantasy VII: a game that was a major stepping stone for the Playstation's success. Since then, Square-Enix has been creating sequels to this game and one of them landed onto the PSP system.

Crisis Core tells the story of a soldier named Zack, one of the characters that had an appearance in Final Fantasy VII. In Crisis Core his goal is to become a 1st class SOLDIER operative in the Shinra power company until he uncovers a massive conspiracy that would shape the events of Final Fantasy VII. Betrayal, revelation, and honor are all things that crop up in this fantastic story, but the only problem is the terrible gameplay that comes with it.

Basically, all this game is a real time action game that tries to copy the turn based action of the original Final Fantasy VII. So you can dodge, block, and move around all you want but you have to select from a menu below what attack you want to do. This creates a unique style of gameplay and would be interesting if you couldn't get away with mashing the basic “attack” button all the time. Most of the time, all you have to do is run up to someone and mash that button and this leads to boredom pretty quickly.

Another unique but weird aspect of the game is its “DMW” which is basically a slot machine. This thing runs during the battle and occasionally matches symbols up which gives you bonuses such as a special attack for the battle or another level. This adds a random element to each battle but it is kind of annoying to have your levels depend on a randomly event.

The magic and special abilities system is a system that also gives the game a unique feel. You can equip materia that gives you magic and special abilities which will level up with you and later in the game you can even combine them together to create new materia. This makes your character build fully customizable and adds some more replay value to the game.

Just by looking at this game, I have to say that this is probably one of the most impressive looking and sounding games that you can buy for the PSP. The cutscenes are insanely detailed and the environment outside of them don't look to shabby either. The soundtrack is also catchy and the voiceovers are great.

Simply put, this game looks good, sounds good, and has an excellent story but it is constantly plagued by a boring, button mashing combat system. If you play this game, it won't be hard to get though the game to see what becomes of Zack, but the path is tedious. One it's over you will be happy that you witnessed an awesome story unfold, but it may not by likely that the game is played again.
