"Simple and Nostalgic"
Alright let's be honest, most of these games on this Treasure Collection are flat out old. But let's face it, when we're out on the road, especially for short trips to a store or something, who really has time to bust out Madden on the PSP and play a full out football game? Who really has time to thwart terrorist missions in Splinter Cell? That's one of the main reasons this game is worth investing in; Most of these games are simple, fun, and quick. But just how good is this package of 20+ games? Well....
in respect to the fact that a lot of these games are old, I won't judge the graphics and sound based on other PSP games, but how well they actually captured the old school games. And Midway Arcade Treasures: Extended Play really does capture most of the graphics. Everything really looks great in this game compared it it's real life counterpart with the exception of a few games. Some of the Mortal Kombats don't even make full use of the PSP screen, leaving black areas around the playing field, and some games like Xybots and Xenophobe make your playing field so small, you'll have to strain your eyes. Other than that, the graphics are great.
I'll give the sound a 10, which is easy to do because the old school games didn't really have much sound. The games that make the most use of the sound are Mortal Kombat 1,2 and 3 and all 3 of them have the classic sounds you know and love... Finish Him!! or Fatality it's all there.
The controls in this game, in my opinion, do not always do a great job of translation from the arcade to the PSP. Mostly I'm talking about Championship Sprint, and Toobin' as you may realize that it's difficult to maneuver compared to the real life game. Other than that, really, the controls are decent. But they really could've been better for some games.
So how does the PSP and Midway Arcade Classics handle all these old games as far gameplay goes? Well, it handles them great, if you don't mind some extremely annoying load times. I'm a big Mortal Kombat fan, and it's great to play some old school MK on my PSP, but it's just ridiculous when it has to load a fatality animation right in the middle of the fatality. Sometimes, in the middle of a fatality, the screen will go dark for as long as 4 seconds just to load 1 simple animation. Loading times really can get in the way of a few great games, but the actual gameplay itself is pretty flawless. Plus, you also get the ability to change your options before playing a game, and can make it easier for you. Gotta love that.
Replay Value: 9/10
This game has great replay value, but I probably didn't have to tell you that. The best about this game is that when you want to buy it your probably telling yourself I'll just buy this game so I can play Mortal Kombat. but then when you get the game and start experimenting with the other games, you'll realize there's probably more to this little game than you ever imagined you will like. You might find yourself addicted to games you never even heard of until now. Also, it worth noting that many of the better games from the home versions of Midway Arcade Treasures are missing. Some of the extremely fun and addicting games like Smash TV, NARC and Hard Drivin' are not here, while some of the less impressive and least popular games like Rampart (not Rampage) are here, presumably because the more popular games would take too much space. That is the main reason I gave this a 9, instead of 10.
I think this game could've gotten a better score but I give it a 8 out of 10. It's got a good array of games but I think it could've been better, and there's no reason for these awful load times for some of these old school simple games. But you do get all of these fun and simple games:
Spy Hunter, Sinistar, Defender, Paperboy, 720, KLAX, Joust, Marble Madness, Toobin', Rampage, Gauntlet, Rampart, Wizard of Wor, Xybots, Championship Sprint, Arch Rivals, Cyberball 2072, Xenophobe, Mortal Kombat, MK 2, and MK 3.
That's pretty impressive. I recommend buying this game for it's nostalgia and simple ability to be fun, despite it's flaws.
