The only stats you have that you can permanently change in battle are brave and faith. Every 4 points of brave that you gain in battle results in 1 permanent brave increase. Likewise, every 4 points of brave that you lose in battle results in 1 permanent loss of brave. The same goes for faith. You cannot drop your permanent faith below 3. Since the minimum faith is 0, you can only drop 3 points, therefore you cannot drop your permanent faith further as you have not lost 4 points of faith. Similarly for brave, the maximum permanent brave you can achieve is 97.

Don't forget to note that if your permanent faith hits 95 or your permanent brave drops to 5, your character will resign from your party (exception: Ramza, guests).

Boosting stats like speed or physical attack through skills like tailwind or shout are ALWAYS temporary and do not last beyond the end of battle.

Only brave and faith can be permentaly raised via abilities. Every 4 Brave or Fiath raised (or lowered) is a permenant gain/loss of 1. Using Focus and Tailwind and etc to raise your PA and Speed or what ever else only lasts for the battle.
