"Truly one of the best games available on the Saturn."
Virtua Fighter 2 is a Head to Head fighting game. But unlike a lot of early fighting games, Virtua Fighter 2 has a lot of depth. There are a large amount of moves for each character, and it has a fighting system that is still amazing, even today. Button mashing won't get you very far in this game, that's for sure.
Graphics: 9/10 - Virtua Fighter 2 has amazing graphics for a Saturn game. They are what you would expect from an early N64 game. The characters are smooth and almost never have clipping problems (something that is common in a lot of other Saturn games). The backgrounds are also good, though they are probably the one thing that could have been improved.
Sound: 8/10 - The sound effects are clear and sound pretty realistic. The music is catchy as well. Nothing amazing, but it won't distract you from the game, or make you want to mute your television.
Controls: 10/10 - The controls in Virtua Fighter 2 are perfect. They are very responsive, no delay. (Which is important in head to head fighters.) The A, B, and C buttons are the main controls, however the X, Y, Z, and R buttons can be set as hot keys for button combos. Their are 3 preset control schemes, but you can also completely customize them in case you don't like the preset ones.
Gameplay: 9/10 - The game has Arcade mode Expert mode (Which for some reason, seems easier than Arcade), Ranking mode, Tournament mode and a Versus mode where you can go against a friend. For the most part the AI is smart enough to catch cheap strategies, although there are some tactics with certain characters that can bypass their defences for quite awhile before they catch on. There is some unlockable content, but not very much, a problem fixed in the later Virtua Fighters. Your records are saved on the system's memory, but they do take up quite a bit of space. Purchasing a memory card for your Saturn is recommended, although the saved data isn't very important, because it is really nothing but records.
Story: 3/10 - The story isn't told in game, so unless you are a fan of the Virtua Fighter series, you won't know much about it. Even if you do know the story, it isn't anything spectacular, better than a lot of head to head fighters, but not nearly as deep as say Soul Calibur.
Overall: 8/10 - A great game for anyone with a Saturn, especially since it will only cost a you a few dollars nowadays.
Reviewer's Rating: 4.5 - Outstanding
