Hyper Sports

FAQ
SG-1000 1985

Version:        1.0

This game differs from the NES and Arcade games by the same title. It is,
however, the same game as 'Hyper Sports 1' on the MSX. The controls are of
course be slightly different on that machine.

BASICS
===============================================================================

Controls:
`````````
The game uses an action button and the directional pad. Use 'A' as the action
button.
Basics:
```````
Each stage needs to be passed to continue with the game.

There are five judges handing out points from 1 to 10. The average of all five
is your score. For example, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 1 would result in a 2.2 total.

Qualification changes with each time you pass an event.

Qualification:  7.60
                8.00
                8.40
                8.80
                9.20
                9.60
                and so on...

When you have passed stage four, stage five is the Diving competition again but
with a higher qualification cut-off.

The game ends when you fail to qualify which is inevitable to happen
eventually, especially seeing that you cannot get past 10.00 when the judges
only hand out 10s as the maximum. When you get that far, tell yourself you have
fully beaten and mastered the game.

EVENTS
===============================================================================

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        Diving
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Controls:
`````````
Action = Jump / Entry
D-Pad  = Somersault
Start by bouncing the with action button. Hit it when you land on the board to
gain more height. On the third time you will bounce forward as well. This is
the time to start making somersaults.
Turn the diver with the directional key until you made at least 2 full turns,
3 would be even better but you have to be very fast.
When you want to dive in, straighten the diver with the action button. Do it
too early and you will lose points, but a bad entry is even worse.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        Long Horse
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Controls:
`````````
Action = Jump
D-Pad  = Somersault

Press the action button once to start running. The gymnast will automatically
run towards the board. When he jumps, press the action button to take off. Try
to get this towards the end of the board for a better jump, but not too late
or you simply jump over it and fail the attempt. You will know if it was good
on the distance along the horse itself - the best would be all the way at the
end of it.

When you land on the horse, jump again to leap higher into the air. As soon as
you do, turn with the directional buttons. Continue to make somersaults until
you reach the floor. You need to land on your feet, which the gymnast does
automatically if the feet are near the ground at the time of your somersault,
and not pointing into the air. If you roll on the floor you will score very
badly.

If you did not make it way past the judge's panel you will have to work on the
first jump as you seem to land on the board too soon. It is also a good idea
to let go off the horse straight away rather than do a second-long handstand.

Finally, don't stop on the horse - that's just embarrassing...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        Trampoline
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Controls:
`````````
Action = Jump
D-Pad  = Somersault
Pretty simple. Jump and make somersaults. Gain height by pressing the action
button as you land on the trampoline. It requires good timing like on the
Diving competition. The higher you get, the better the trick you can pull off.
Small single somersaults are not worth many points.
You have thirty seconds to impress the judges.
Try to gain height first, at least up to 7 or 8. Then start the somersaults.
Every time you land, press the action button to get a little boost. With every
boost you should go higher and higher, allowing for more turns. Landing on any
body part but your feet costs plenty of points. It will get harder to spot the
floor and time the somersaults, but by then you only have like one or two more
to go until the timer runs out.
Unlike the other events you only have one attempt on this stage.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        Horizontal Bar
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Controls:
`````````
Action = Release
D-Pad  = Somersault

Press the action button to start swinging. With each swing the gymnast will go
faster. If you let him continue forever he will eventually swing out and
result in a foul.

When he is rapidly swinging around, watch closely and do a long loop
somersault to the right side by pressing the action button once again. You
should be well past the judge's table to get a good score. Do not forget to
turn like crazy to get as nice flip going.

If you do not let go at the good time, the gymnast might land too short and
run close to the judge's table. This is a bad sign.

The game now re-starts with the first stage but with a higher qualification
requirement. It will loop forever until you eventually fail.
