A. Foreword
-----------

     Welcome to version 2.0 of this Mortal Kombat II (the Master System
version) FAQ. In this version, I tried to cover even more things about this
game, correcting lots of typos and wrong information of version 1.0. Around
7 KBs have been added to this FAQ (I don't really remember). The main new
things in this update are the stage fatalities. A nice reader, Kevin Nguyen,
sent them to me. Well, unlike all the other versions of MKII, including the
GameBoy version, all the characters here have the same move-input. In other
words, memorize it for all the characters.

     And, in case you are a new fan of the series and you might want to know
something from someone like me, who have lived with all the parts of it, I've
included the History of Mortal Kombat. I hope it will be useful.

     One last thing I've added is, the Winning Poses section. It's a small
chapter of this guide, which describes what the characters do in their victory
poses.

     What I need from you, readers, is a confirmation of if I missed a type of
fatalities like babalities, since they appeared in all the other versions of
MKII.

     Anyway, to contact me for any question/addition/correction/comment, send
a message to <badboy_@go.com>. Thanks and take care.

B. History of Mortal Kombat
---------------------------

     First of all, the following paragraphs are 100% invented by ME! I didn't
copied anything from anywhere. Therefore, there might be some mistakes.

     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     THE BEGINNING OF FIGHTING GAMES...
     If you're interested to know the history of Mortal Kombat, then I prefer
you read the following paragraphs.  The fighting games were originally
invented by a famous company called Capcom.  In 1987, the company created a
well-known game, which is Street Fighter for the Arcades.  The game went cool,
at least for us in the past.  It was extremly basic, but, it WAS the only
fighting game in our world.  After two years, or in 1989, for some reasons,
Capcom released the first home version of Street Fighter, calling it "Fighting
Street," and guess what?  For the NEC TurboGrafx 16!  It wasn't so known
actually.  The real first SF game was probably Street Fighter 2010 for the
NES, which was released in 1990.  After one year, or in 1991, Capcom continued
the success by itself alone in the markets by releasing the second part of
Street Fighter for the Arcades, and for both of the NES and Super Nintendo!  I
think that this WAS the real beginning of the Street Fighter series.  The
other companies gone mad and greedy about the money that Capcom had by the
sale of the SF games, but Capcom wanted to release another SF game.  In 1992,
Capcom released a special version of Arcade SF game called Street Fighter 2:
Champion Edition.
     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

     FIRST CHALLENGE...

     Then, the first "challenger" made an appearance after finishing its
fighting game. The "challenger" was Midway with their game, Mortal Kombat for
the Arcades. "Mortal Kombat has changed the world of video-gaming, forever!"
I heard this sentence, and it was true. In the same year, or in 1992, Midway
released the first Arcade Mortal Kombat. It was damned cool! It really
changed the world. SF games were releasing one after another, and the only
other fighting game was one Mortal Kombat. The home consoles, after that,
received their special version of MK1 games. Actually, it meant to be a quick
project, but somehow, it was the mother of all fighting games. It featured
Johnny Cage, Kano, Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, Sonya, and Sub-Zero. The game
also features a hidden character who is Goro. Notes: in the home convertions,
all them have all the mentioned characters, except the Master System, which
Kano wasn't there. And, the portable version have less characters. The
GameGear version is exactly like the Master System (no Kano), but the GameBoy
doesn't have a Johnny Cage, but it does have Kano instead. Another note:
Raiden is spelled Rayden in the GameBoy version only, although it's more
better to spell it in that way. One last note about the first MK game: it
wasn't released for the PlayStation (one), although most of the ones after it
were released for it.

     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     MIDWAY DID IT AGAIN...
     In 1993, Midway released the second part of the series; Mortal Kombat II
(note that this FAQ is made for it).  The game featured more characters and
the graphics are awesome!  The game featured:  first, the old characters which
are Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero.  Also, two
non-playable characters became playable in this part which are Reptile (only a
few Arcades have this secret character) and Shang Tsung.  New characters:
Baraka, Jax, Kitana, Kung Lao, and Mileena.  Note:  Kano and Sonya didn't have
an appearance in this part.  Another note:  now the portable versions along
with the Master System have the same eight characters, that means, no Johnny
Cage, Raiden, Baraka.  GameBoy gamers didn't have the chance to play Johnny
Cage.  :)  In the Arcade version, each character has around five fatalities!
This is also appeared in the major versions like SNES and Genesis.  The
GameBoy version three fatalities for each character, but the GameGear and
Master System have only one fatality.  :(  Some notes about the appearances of
the characters:  Johnny Cage now wears trousers instead of shorts.  Raiden
looks great IMO.  Shang Tsung, the final boss of MK1, is really different due
to his sorcery.  Now his hear is black not white.  :)  Last note:  new ninja
characters added, besides Reptile, but they're females!  Kitana & Mileena!
     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

     THE THIRD PART...

     1994 did not have any obvious MK releases, so I'll skip it. In 1995, MK3
has already out there. The game's extremely magnificent! It had also old and
new characters, along with new moves and fatalities. Let's start with the old
ones: Jax, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, and Sub-Zero. Also, MK3 features the return
of the two characters that weren't in the previous part; Kano & Sonya. The
new characters of MK3 are much more than the old ones. In MK3, for the first
time, you'll see: Cyrax, Kabal, Tsung, Nightwolf, Sektor, Sheeva, Sindel,
and Stryker. We miss the following characters: Baraka, Johnny Cage, Kitana,
Mileena, Raiden, Reptile, Scorpion, and Shang Tsung. And, for the second time
in the Mortal Kombat history, there's a hidden character. Yes, he's Smoke
(appeared in MK2 as a hidden enemy). BTW, Smoke has two forms, a human, and a
robot form. The hidden one in this part is the robot, but the one in MK2 was
a human. Notes: this game wasn't released for the GameGear. But, a company
named Tec Toy (a Brazilian company as far as I know) has released the game for
the Master System! :) Note 2: the GameBoy version was, yet again, limited.
:( It has only 8 characters. GB gamers miss Jax, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Tsung,
Nightwolf, and Stryker. At least they have a hidden character; Smoke. Note 3:
Jax has some iron things on his arms. Sub-Zero doesn't wear a mask for the
first time! Note 4: another new ninja warriors were added to this game, but
they're not humans! They're robots (or if you want, cyborgs); Cyrax, Sektor,
plus Smoke!

     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     THE ULTIMATE...
     Next, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.  It's really, really the best MK of all
the series.  It was released on the Arcades, and then converted into home
versions like SNES, Genesis, PlayStation, Saturn, and so.  The game featured
nearly all the characters of the previous MK games.  Let's have a quick
knowledge of them:  Cyrax, Jax, Kabal, Kano, Kung Lao, Liu Kang,
Tsung, Nightwolf, Sektor, Sindel, Sonya, Stryker, Sub-Zero (two characters,
one with mask, and the other without)!  And, the following characters returned
to the game:  Kitana, Mileena, Reptile, Scorpion.  Also, Smoke appears in this
game as a normal character, not hidden.  There's another Scorpion without a
mask!  In addition, Jade & Noob Saibot (two characters appeared in MK2 as non-
playable) can finally be playable!  There's more, the first character in the
"Select Your Fighter" screen is new to the MK world.  A character called Rain
(like Sub-Zero, Scorpion, or Reptile, but with purple clothes).  Wow!  They're
a lot.  There IS a hidden character in addition to all of those!  The human
form of Smoke!  This release of UMK3 is simply the BEST!  Note:  I haven't
heard of a portable UMK3.  Note 2:  the Smoke the appears in this game is the
only who appears in MK3, and the one who's like a human (the hidden) is the
one who appears in MK2 as a secret.
     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

     THE TRILOGY...

     MKT or Mortal Kombat Trilogy has then released for the very good new-
generation systems like N64. Unfortunately, I haven't the chance to play it.
So, once I get some info, I'll update this section.

     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     SUB-ZERO...
     Various and random releases were made for Mortal Kombat games after the
Ultimate part.  Examples are the Mortal Kombat Trilogy, and Mortal Kombat
Mythologies: Sub-Zero.  This is an adventure game released for consoles like
the PSX.  You have the control of Sub-Zero, and you have to beat the levels.
     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

     THE FOURTH AND THE BEST...

     In 1997, the fourth part of the series has released. It is the first MK
3D fighting game ever created. Note: in-depth information about this part
will be done in the upcoming version, which might possibly be the third and
last version made to this FAQ.

     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     IT TURNS INTO GOLD...
     After two years, or in 1999, Midway released a 3D Mortal Kombat for the
new Dreamcast (at that time).  The game's good in terms of graphics, comparing
with MK4.  Note:  in-depth information will also be added in the next final
version of this guide.
     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

     SPECIAL FORCES, ALONE...

     In 2000, Midway released another adventure MK game, but now with 3D
graphics! Mortal Kombat: Special Forces. You control the main guy of the
Outworld Special Forces Team, Jax. BTW, this team is leaded by Jax and the
known members are Sonya, Kenshi (recently, only), and Cyrax.

     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     NUMBER 5...
     And, the fifth, Mortal Kombat V.  It is called Mortal Kombat: Deadly
Alliance and were released for the nowadays systems; PlayStation2, Xbox, and
GameCube.  I, actually, play this game at all the times, but I still love the
previous MK games (and that's why I wrote this FAQ).  The good thing is that
this game HAS a portable version for the GameBoy Advance.  Portable versions
are still limited, however.  IT IS THE BEST EVER FIGHTING GAME IN THE WORLD!!!
It has some old skool characters:  Cyrax, Jax, Johnny Cage, Kano, Kitana, Kung
Lao, Quan Chi, Raiden, Reptile, Scorpion, Shang Tsung, Sonya, and Sub-Zero.
Also, there are new characters:  Bo' Rai Cho, Drahmin, Frost, Hsu Hao, Li Mei,
Kenshi, Mavado, and Nitara.  In addition, there are two hidden characters;
MoKap & Blaze.  Note:  Jax became really different.  He wears green trousers
and a red hat.  Kung Lao now, as his main costume, is wearing a new set of
clothes, and his hat is on his back.  Reptile here is completely different.
He looks like a real reptile!  Shang Tsung, as I mentioned in MK2's history,
because of his sorcery, has changed a little bit.  He has long hair, and his
costume is red.  Quan Chi has become also a little bit different.  Sonya wears
a new costume.  And Sub-Zero's hands are completely frozen.  :)
     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

     FUTURE OF MK...

     I hope of more great MK fighting games coming in the way, and examples of
the upcoming games is "Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition" for the GameBoy
Advance.

C. Updates History
------------------

     Version 1.0, on 6/07/2003
     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     The first edition of the FAQ.
     Version 2.0, on 7/24/2003
     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     The things that I made in this version are...
       - New foreword.
       - The history of Mortal Kombat series.
       - Some corrections made, including Tsung's Soul Sucker and
         Zero's Freeze-and-Shatter fatalities.
       - Got a confirmation a few days ago about the existence of the
         stage fatalities in this version of MKII. Thanks, Kevin!
       - Added one move and corrected another, thanks to Shang Tsung.
         They are Kitana's Flying Punch and Sub Zero's and Reptile's
         Slide moves.
       - Added the Thanks Section.
       - Added the Winning Poses section.
       - I only need several more things to completely finalize this
         FAQ.

     Version 2.5, on 8/09/2003
     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     Not much.  Only some small additions.  Two sites added to host
     my FAQs.  Also, this might be the last update to the FAQ because
     I have revised it, and corrected the moves' names (from the manual)
     and added three more moves (two for Scorpion and the third's for
     Jax).
==============================================================================
                    II.   Conventions of MKII and the FAQ
==============================================================================
A. My Conventions
-----------------
     The original Arcade MKII has lots of buttons, but here in this version,
the controls are...
Up, Down, Right, Left               Moves the character.
Button 1                            Punches the opponent.
Button 2                            Kicks the opponent.
Pause                               Pauses the game.
     So, there are only one button for kicks, and another for punches.
There's an extra thing that you could do on the original MKII for the Arcade
which is, the blocks.  There was a whole button for blocks, but, due the few
buttons of a Master System controller, you can block by using...
Punch and Kick at the same time     Blocks attacks made by the opponent.
     Blocking is used to decrease the effect of a move done by your opponent.
However, it will not give you a 100% protection, so remember this.  To deal
with the opponents, use Kicks, Punches, and Blocks, and when you win, just
FINISH HIM/HER!  Fatalities are all written in this FAQ, with a description on
how the character does the move.  To move to the lists, I'd also like to
inform you with the system I used to explain how to do the move.  I made it as
easy as it should be, so there's, actually, no need to read the paragraphs
below, unless you don't understand my method.
Number of the move. Name of the move
      Description:
      Here, I give a quick description on how the character does his/her
      move/fatality.
      How to Perform:
      This is how to perform the move/fatality mentioned above.  Look
      below to know more about this.
     I used some phrases to explain how to perform the move/fatality, and they
are...
Forward                             Press the direction where the opponent's
                                    standing.
Backward                            Press the direction opposite to where the
                                    opponent's standing.
Punch                               Press Button 1 (the Punch button).
Kick                                Press Button 2 (the Kick button).
Down                                Press Down on the directional pad.
Up                                  Press Up on the directional pad.
Hold <insert the button here> for   Press and keep pressing <insert the button
                                    here> for the number of seconds written
                                    after "for."  Seconds counted
                                    approximately.
Release <insert the button here>    After holding the button, simply, release
                                    <insert the button here> that you've just
                                    held.
Then...                             After you do the first part of the move or
                                    fatality, do the other part of it.
(<insert the two button here>)      Press <insert the two button here> at the
                                    same time.
Left                                Press Left from the directional pad (even
                                    if your opponent's standing to the left or
                                    to the right).
Right                               Press Right from the directional pad (even
                                    if your opponent's standing to the left or
                                    to the right).
as much and quickly as you can      Press <insert the button here>
                                    simultaneously and quickly.
four times as a full fatality       In order to do Jax's complete fatality,
                                    you should perform this part four times at
                                    most.
,                                   Then.
+                                   At the same time.
     One last and important thing to talk about in case you don't know of it,
the fatalities.  There are two types of them, as far as I know (thanks go to
Kevin Nguyen for telling me the second one)...
Fatality                            This type can be done anywhere after you
                                    defeat your opponent two rounds and the
                                    words "Finish Him!" or "Finish Her!"
                                    (depending on the sex).
                                    For each character his/her own
                                    demonstration on finishing the enemy.  The
                                    in-put controls differ from a character to
                                    another.  This type cannot be done on Shao
                                    Kahn, the final boss.
Stage Fatality                      This type can only be done on the Kombat
                                    Tomb stage (that has a red background;
                                    it's obvious).  When the words "Finish
                                    Him!" or "Finish Her!" appear on the
                                    screen, press Forward, Backward, Forward,
                                    Punch.  This applies for all the
                                    characters.  The one who does it will
                                    perform a strong uppercut that'll take the
                                    enemy to the ceiling above, which has
                                    spikes on it.
B. Art of Kombat II
-------------------
     This following is a miscellanous which has been copied directly from the
Mortal Kombat II (Master System) instruction manual, in case you want to know.
The Basic Moves:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

     The art of Kombat is as it has been for thousand of years. A wise
warrior will begin his training with the art of defense. Far more valuable
than learning how to inflict blows is learning how to avoid or deflect them,
for an opponent who attacks is an opponent who is vulnerable to attack.
Defensive lessons are as follows (based on default settings):

     To move Forward or Back Press the D-BUTTON LEFT or RIGHT
     To block Press the 1 and 2 BUTTONS simultaneously
     To crouch Press the D-BUTTON DOWN
     To jump Press the D-BUTTON UP
     To Flip Forward or back Press the D-BUTTON UP + LEFT or RIGHT

     Once defense has been mastered, a warrior can begin to learn the
fundamental offensive moves - the punches and kicks. In combination with
strong defensive tactics, these moves are enough to defeat most foes. The
fundamental offensive moves are as follows:

                       To Punch Press the 1 BUTTON
                       To Kick Press the 2 BUTTON

The Advanced Moves:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     The advanced moves use the basic moves as building blocks to form
powerful maneuvers.  However, although they do more damage, they also are
slower.  The advanced moves are as follows:
            To Uppercut                   Press CROUCH + PUNCH
            To Foot Sweep                 Press DOWN + AWAY + KICK
            To Roundhouse                 Press AWAY + KICK
            To execute a Flying Punch     JUMP or FLIP + PUNCH
            To execute a Flying Kick      JUMP or FLIP + KICK
Special Moves:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

     While being a master of Kombat may be enough to win any Earth contest,
winning a contest in the hostile Outworld requires more of a warrior. In
preparation for this tournament, every warrior has perfected several special
moves. These moves often draw upon spiritual or supernatural energies,
extreme physical conditioning, or mutant abilities for their effectiveness and
can be especially potent, often devastating an opponent.

==============================================================================
                              IV.   Ending Texts
==============================================================================

     When you beat the game (by defeating Shao Kahn), you read some text about
what your character did after that. In this section, I wrote those texts.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A. Liu Kang
-----------

     With his Shaolin temple in ruins, Liu Kang journeys into the outworld.
Enters Shao Kahn's tournament and unleashes a fury that does not end until the
defeat of Shao Kahn. Liu Kang then returns to the seclusion of his Shaolin
temple. He pays his respects to his lost brothers and finally realizes that
the events which have taken place where all fulfillment of his destiny.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B. Sub Zero
-----------

     When SubZero failed to return from the Shaolin tournament and rumor of
Shang Tsung's survival reached the Lin Kuei clan, they immediately sent
another assassin to complete the task. This new warrior is actually the
younger brother of the original SubZero. He enters the outworld contest and
accomplishes his task. He learns of Scorpion's foul vendetta against his
brother but will never know why his life was spared. Perhaps a third
tournament is in his future?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

C. Kitana
---------

     Through her years of working as an assassin, Kitana has learned many
secrets especially about her own past. She finds that Mileena is not her twin
but a grotesque clone created by Shang Tsung. She learns that her parents
were the former rulers of the outworld, overthrown by Shao Kahn when she was
an infant. Determined to retake back what is rightfully hers she must defeat
Kahn himself. She does so by entering the tournament and eliminating the
obstacles that keep her from her goal, retaking her parents' castle and
restoring the outworld back into a realm of nobility.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

D. Reptile
----------

     Reptile has always loyally served as Shang Tsung's protector. While
maintaining a very low profile in the first tournament he discovered Tsung's
plot to force the remaining members of his near extinct race into slavery
under Shao Kahn's rules. Reptile then devises a plan of his own. He enters
the outworld tournament, defeats Shao Kahn and turns against Shang Tsung
ending his master's scheme. Now his race can live in their own peaceful
existence.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E. Tsung
--------

     Shang Tsung not only turns against and defeats both Kintaro and Shao
Kahn, he also takes over their rule of the outworld. With Shao Kahn's armies
at his command, he finally unbalances the furies, and weakens the dimensional
gates between the outworld and the Earth realm. Along with his elite group of
sorcerers he uses this weakness to march a never ending horde of demons into
the Earth and doom its inhabitants to eternal darkness. Have a nice day.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F. Mileena
----------

     Once thought to be Kitana's twin sister, she is actually a grotesque
clone created by Shang Tsung. With Shao Kahn suspicious of Kitana's motives,
Mileena siezes the opportunity to attack Kahn and his minions. Caught off
guard they are no match for Mileena's speed. She wins the tournament and
together with her secret companion Baraka, they rule the world as king and
queen.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

G. Scorpion
-----------

     Upon learning of SubZero's reappearance, Scorpion enters Shao Kahn's
tournament. He witnesses SubZero spare the life of an opponent and realizes
that this is not the same SubZero who murdered him so long ago. He lets the
ninja live and goes on to defeat the outworlders in their unholy contest.
With the defeat of Shao Kahn, Scorpion discovers a new purpose for his
existence. He becomes the guardian of the new SubZero to atone for murdering
his older brother and in preparation for a third tournament.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

H. Jax
------

     Jax finds Sonya held captive alongside their arch enemy Kano. Her only
chance of escape is by Jax entering Shao Kahn's contest. With fierce
determination he catches the outworld warriors off guard and wins the
tournament bringing Shao Kahn's rule to a crashing halt. During the chaos
that follows, Jax and Sonya escape through the dimensional gate from which
they entered. Kano once again eludes capture but Jax and Sonya know they will
cross paths with him in the future.

                                V.    Secrets
==============================================================================

Play Against Jade
-----------------

     Jade's battle is marked with a question mark in the tower. While you are
playing the one before it, do NOT use the punch button from the start of the
fight, 'till its end.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Play Against Smoke
------------------

     This secret is really cool. Smoke appears in this game. To play against
him, when a man's face in grey appears in the corner of the screen, before it
disappears, press Down + (Punch + Kick). You'll be taken to a new place,
playing against the hardest pal of Mortal Kombat II.

==============================================================================
                             VI.   Winning Poses
==============================================================================

     In this new section, I'll describe what the characters do when they beat
an opponent of theirs.

  O  Liu Kang
     He raises his arms up then puts his left hand straight and his right
     one upright on it.

  O  Sub Zero
     He raises his left arm up.

  O  Kitana
     She puts her right arm on his back, and holds her fan with the left
     hand, then bends to the viewers.

  O  Reptile
     He puts his hands on his head then raises them up.

  O  Tsung
     He simply puts his hands on his waist.

  O  Mileena
     She holds both of her sais, then raises her arm up, making an X by
     using those sais.

  O  Scorpion
     Like Tsung, he puts his hands on his waist.

  O  Jax
     He raises his arms up, showing his muscles.

  O  Jade
     She puts her right arm on his back, and holds her fan with the left
     hand, then bends to the viewers.

  O  Kintaro
     He raises his upper left arm up.

  O  Shao Kahn
     Like Tsung, he puts his hands on his waist.

  O  Smoke
     He either raises his left arm up like Zero, or his right arm.
