""Xceptional" sequel to an "Xceptional" game"
One third of the holy trilogy of SNES MMX games. While no sequel has quite matched the completeness and sheer epicosity of the original, X2 is probably the most complete follow-up.
Story - 7.5/10 - X2's plot is simple but engaging. Six months have passed since the initial Maverick rebellion broke out and Sigma met his end at the hands of Mega Man X. Well, his first end anyway. X, now the leader of the Maverick Hunters, is tracking down remaining mavericks while searching for Zero's parts in hopes of reviving him from his "incident" in the first game. Sigma returns, and is backed by a new group of henchmen, the X-Hunters, who appear as hidden optional bosses and possess Zero's parts. The ending is somewhat influenced should you choose to face them, whoop that robot ass, and reclaim your BFF
Gameplay - 10/10 - Plays similar to the first, which is a damn good thing, since X1 is the best game ever <__<. Level design and item placement are well thought out, and armor upgrades are expanded on. X starts the game off with his dashing ability and soon acquires a mid-air dash, improving overall mobility. The Buster upgrade allows for a double charged shot, so X can inflict twice the punishment on robot evil-doers. The helmet upgrade comes with a tracking device, in case you're having trouble locating heart tanks, sub tanks, and other such items that a secret passageway would house. And the chest upgrade improves overall defense. Boss fights are fun, and the acquired Maverick weapons are some of the most useful and addicting weapons to use in the series, right after X1's arsenal. More collectibles, and hidden optional bosses add replay value.
Music -9/10 - The soundtrack is solid like most MM titles, but there's something about the instruments used in the SNES games that leaves the player vulnerable to eargasms on occasion. I listened to the Castlevania theme remixed with X2 instruments not long ago and my mind was blown away. Luckily, it wasn't that windy outside and I was able to retrieve it shortly after. Overall, it's not quite as memorable as the first game's soundtrack, but I'll be damned if there are no musical gems in this game. Crystal Snail's theme, the intro, and the first X-Hunter stage theme are all examples of 16-bit musical perfection.
Definitely a must have for any MM fan, and anyone working on a credible SNES collection.
