 - Introduction -

This guide has been created to compliment Thundergod's Star Ocean Save State
Hacking Guide, which is available at GameFAQs; if something doesn't make
sense, try reading Thundergod's guide to see if things clear up. Anyways, to
make a long story short, I got tired of trying to find a particular item out
of SO1's HUGE Inventory(tm), and wanted a list showing 'what lies where'. So
I put this together in the wee hours of the morning. I HIGHLY reccommend using
Hex Workshop version 2.54, since it's one of the easier-to-use versions.

 - Getting Started & The Basic Steps of Hacking Star Ocean Save States -

Here's what you will need to make use of this guide:

- Star Ocean SFC ROM (DO NOT ASK ME ON WHERE TO GET THIS!)
- The Zsnes emulator (get it at http://www.zsnes.com)
- Hex Workshop (get it at http://www.bpsoft.com)
- DeJap's Star Ocean SDD-1 graphics patch (get it at http://www.dejap.com)

~ First, make sure Zsnes and Hex Workshop are installed on the computer you
 are doing the hacking on.
~ Next, use the SDD-1 patch on your ROM of Star Ocean (instructions on how to
do this come with the patch); if you have already done this, then you can pat
yourself on the back for using your head.
~ Run the Star Ocean ROM in Zsnes.
~ Now, start a new game or continue a previously saved game.
~ While having the game loaded up (basically, you should be able to move Ratix
around on the screen), SAVE STATE by pressing F2.
~ Switch out of Zsnes by using Alt + Tab (or whatever you or your O/S prefers).
~ Load up Hex Workshop and open the .ZST file with the name you gave your Star
Ocean ROM (ie: SO1_JAP.ZST is created from making a save state with
 SO1_JAP.SMC)
~ "Go to" (Ctrl + G) to the Inventory/Equipment Offset and, using the charts in
the next section, make changes of the Inventory to your liking. Save when
you're done; if you're not extremely confident you did it right, create a
backup file (Hex Workshop will ask by default if it can do this for you each
 time you save).
~ Go back to your Star Ocean game in Zsnes and LOAD STATE by pressing F4. Go
into your item menu and see the changes.

To avoid screwing up your editing hugely by making a mistake, make only a few
changes at a time to track your hacking movements and find out where you went
wrong much easier.

 - Other Basic Information and Offset Guides -

If you didn't know already, Star Ocean has over 500 different items in its'
Inventory database. Therefore, the game uses the ingenious method of using the
Item Quantity Byte to discern which item is on that particular slot in the
Inventory. For example, if you gave the item in the first inventory slot the
ID "C6 01" you would get 1 Stone Check; but if you changed it to "C6 81", you
would get 1 Neko Band. Pretty cool, huh?

------------------------------------------------------------------

While I was making this guide, I noticed that Star Ocean's HUGE Inventory(tm)
uses different second item bytes with the Equipment and Inventory, because
each Equipment slot only carries 1 (one) item at a time, and the Inventory
can carry up to 20 (twenty) of an item. I'm pretty sure Thundergod didn't
include this important tidbit in his guide at all; So, for the everyone's
benefit, here's a reference:

- Equipment second byte:
- First Half = 00
- Second Half = 01

- Inventory second byte:
- First Half = 00 - 14
- Second Half = 80 - 94

Item names in FULL CAPITALS are hiragana/katakana left intact (with the exception
of the Battle Cards, the Un-Appraised items, and the CSSS Weapon). Also, some
offsets were assigned to non-existant items, which don't have names or icons; I
have left a blank space where these 25 dummy items are.

Inventory Offsets: 8DF4 - 8FF3
(8DF4 being the first item slot)

Note: Yes, I do know that a few items have weirdly-translated names, such as
"Glaucel Sword". I haven't the foggiest what they're supposed to be "Engrish"
for at the moment, so that's how they'll stay until I find out the proper names.

- Updates -

27-10-2003 - Version 1.0: First Edition. Has all items and their offsets, plus
a small byte guide for people hacking items into inventory as well as equipment.
I do acknoweledge that I could have formatted this guide better, but I'm rather
lazy when it comes to layouts. Sometime in the future I may or may not list what
the Un-Appraised items turn into.

- Thanks -

GameFAQs: For the best videogame guide library ever.
Cless: For helping me learn how to do game hacking, and for being a good friend.
Thundergod: For making his StarOcean hacking guide in the first place.
Break Point Software: For making Hex Workshop.
tri-Ace: For making Star Ocean.
Enix: For publishing Star Ocean.
DeJap: For their almost tireless effort in their Star Ocean SDD-1 graphics
 descrambling AND translation project.

... and all those webcomics I read (like http://www.manatheater.com).

 - Contacting the Author of this Guide -

If you find inconsistencies, errors, or whatever in this guide, please let me
know at yetika@NOSPAMinuyasha.nu (without the NOSPAM). This is my first guide
release ever, so I'd like some C&C on this.

DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, EMAIL ME TO ASK ME OF THE FOLLOWING:
- Where to download the ROM
- To do the hacking for you
- How to use Hex Workshop (use the help file that comes with Hex Workshop)
- Information not directly related to this FAQ.

I will delete any email that ignore this desperate plea for intelligent life
on the internet. And please, speak REAL english people.

If you are stuck in your game, one of the many walkthroughs available through
GameFAQs should be of help to you. If not, try the Star Ocean GameFAQs Board.
To be honest, I suck at giving advice for videogames sometimes, it's better to
ask there since I'd probably cause more confusion if you asked me for help.
