                                 INTRODUCTION

Vigilante was first released in arcades in 1988. It was a side scrolling 
action fighting game. A highly inferior ported version appeared on the Sega 
Master System (SMS) that same year. While the Master System version was 
similar, it featured inferior graphics, variations on enemies and bosses, and
terrible game control. The version I first played was a port that appeared on
the Turbo Grafx 16 Entertainment System (TG16) in 1989. This version was 
virtually identical to the arcade version. In fact the only differences I 
could find were some minor sound quality/effects, limited credits, and exhaust
from the van. The names of the characters, enemies, and bosses are identical 
to the arcade version, as opposed to the SMS version.

                                     STORY
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following is taken directly from the instruction manual and is not my 
original work:

                             New York's Dark Story

Welcome to the mean streets. Here the bustling metropolis of New York shows a
different face. Now there is neither law nor order in a place where "might 
makes right". You know it well because you are...the Vigilante. Your 
girlfriend, Madonna, has been kidnapped by a savage street gang. You must make
a single-handed raid into enemy territory to save her. Downtown, in back 
streets, in junkyards, and across bridges; you take on the toughest crew of 
bad guys ever- including skinheads, punks, and thugs. You must fight every
inch of the way with your bare hands, and when you can get them, nunchaku. Get
ready for some brutal hand-to-hand combat on the toughest turf around! Madonna
is depending on you!

                          SUB-SECTION 4A: GAME BASICS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Vigilante's attacks consist mostly of kicks and punches. The game also 
features a time limit of 99 on each stage. It should be noted that this is not
equivalent to 99 seconds. The game timer is much slower than an actual timer 
by possibly as much as 100%. Also, if you remain in a crouching position after
the time has elapsed, you will not lose a life until the down button is 
released. You start the game with 2 lives and 3 credits, for a total of 6 
chances to complete the game before retiring and restarting from the 
beginning. The Vigilante's vitality or HP is displayed by a horizontal bar
labeled "Player", located at the top portion of the screen. Directly under the
Vigilante's HP bar is the stage boss's vitality gauge, labeled "Enemy". The 
Vigilante's HP bar is red in color, while the boss's HP is green. Also 
displayed on the screen is the current score as well as the over all high 
score which is 5000 by default. When the power is switched off on the game 
console the high score will be lost and return to the default. Scoring is 
determined by the method used to kill, as well as the number and type of 
attackers. I will cover the scoring in more detail in Sub-Section 4C.

                SUB-SECTION 4B: CONTROLS AND BUTTON COMBINATIONS

Various button combinations produce a variety of different attacks and 
techniques. Here is a list of all button functions followed by all possible 
attack combinations:

D-Pad Left/Right:           Moves the Vigilante in the respective direction
D-Pad Down:                 Makes the Vigilante Crouch
D-Pad Up:                   Used to make the Vigilante Jump or climb up 
Button I:                   Kick button
Button II:                  Punch/nunchaku strike button
Run Button:                 Starts and pauses the game
Select button:              N/A
Run+Select:                 In game reset
D-Pad Left/Right+Button I:  Moving Kick
D-Pad Left/Right+Button II: Moving punch/nunchaku strike

*NOTE: The Turbo switches can be used in conjunction with their respective 
button. For rapid fire on kick attacks and Punch/nunchaku attacks, place both
switches in the highest position. Also note that if you so choose, pressing 
the Left/Right direction on the D-Pad simultaneously with the Up direction on 
the D-pad+Button I/II will produce Left/Right jump attack.

                            SUB-SECTION 4C: SCORING

As I mentioned earlier, scoring is determined by method of kill, type and 
number of enemies. The two types of attackers are (1) unarmed and (2) armed.

                               Unarmed Assailants

The player receives 10 pts for a kick attack on a single foe. For group of 2 
or more, the player would receive 10pts for the 1st enemy, 20pts for the 2nd,
and 20 more for the 3rd. For punch attacks the player is awarded 20pts for the
1st, 20pts for the 2nd, and 40pts for the 3rd. For a jump kick the player is 
awarded 40pts per kill. And for a nunchaku strike the player only receives 
10pts.

                                Armed Assailants

The player receives 20pts for standing kicks, crouching kicks, and nunchaku
strikes. 40pts are awarded for jump kicks, and punch kills.

Nunchaku: The only weapon in the game. The Nunchaku is a weapon formed by two 
wooden sticks joined together by a metal length of chain. It replaces the 
punch with a much more powerful strike. However, fewer points are awarded for 
this method of kill.

1-Up: This really isn't an item, but this is my walkthrough and I want it 
here. A 1-Up is awarded at 5000pts. It is nothing more than an additional 
life. There is no other method of obtaining this item.

                                   WALKTHROUGH

*NOTE: Some enemies don't always appear in the same place and at times not at
all. The following walkthrough was written using the enemies and situations I
encountered on this particular play through. You may experience some 
randomness during your play through. All boss encounters are constant as are
most of the scenarios.

                     SUB-SECTION 6A: MAIN ST, NEW YORK CITY
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ITEMS: Nunchaku X 3
ENEMIES: Strangler, Red Mohawk, Dirty Jack, Hit Man Joe
SUB-BOSS: Crow Bar
BOSS: Axe 

This stage is basically a market or strip-mall on Main St in New York City. 
Start (as always) by heading east. You'll be assaulted by a mob of Stranglers, 
lead by a Red Mohawk. After dispatching the foes you should see your 1st 
nunchaku on the deck in front of a bay door under a green awning. Continuing 
on east you'll come across another mob of Stranglers, this time their ring 
leader is a Dirty Jack. It won't be long before you come across what is 
obviously a music store of some sort. You should see nunchaku #2 directly in 
front of this shop. Pressing on you'll come across another group of 
Stranglers, just like last time, lead by a Dirty Jack. You'll soon be in the 
Pipi room area. 2-4 Stranglers will exit out of Pipi Room #1. If you need it,
there will be a 3rd nunchaku between the two Pipi rooms. Watch out for Hit Man
Joe, who exits out of pipi room #2 as you pass. Continue east to meet the 
sub-boss and stage boss.

                            SUB-SECTION 6B: JUNK YARD
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ITEMS: Nunchaku X 2
ENEMIES: Strangler, Crow Bar, Chain Gang
BOSS: Tough Brothers

This stage is basically, well a junkyard! This stage, just like the last one 
has the Vigilante moving in an eastwardly direction. This stage is comprised 
of a "loop", that is repeated to create the 2nd half of the area. You'll see
what I mean in a moment. You'll be greeted by the Strangler as you journey 
to the far east of the junkyard. You'll also notice 2 Crow Bars lurking on the
2nd vehicle stack as well as 1 more on the 3rd. More Stranglers and yet 
another Crow Bar perched on top of an orange pick-up truck. Here is the "loop"
I was talking about earlier. The sequence of vehicles and Crow Bars is 
duplicated here. You can find nunchaku #1 between a breadtruck and a yellow 
car. After yet another onslaught of Stranglers, you'll face your first Chain
Gang. You'll find nunchaku #2 again between a breadtruck and yellow car (that
loop again). After dispatching a few more Stranglers you meet the Tough Bros.
No sub-boss this time; just 2 bosses.

                         SUB-SECTION 6C: BROOKLYN BRIDGE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ITEMS: Nunchaku X 2
ENEMIES: Hell's Angel, Strangler, Red Mohawk, Hit Man Joe
BOSS: Spike Boss

This stage takes place on a highway bridge, but strangely the only traffic is 
motorcycles. As soon as you begin the stage get ready to jump kick a Hell's
Angel. If you are successful, watch out for the exploding bike. As you 
continue east the wave of Hell's Angels will eventually recede. Then it's 
back to the good old Stranglers. You'll see nunchaku #1 up ahead, guarded by
a Red Mohawk. After a couple more Red Mohawks if you are without, nunchaku #2
is on the deck. After collecting it, you find yourself in the middle of a 
shoot out between a pair of Hit Men Joe. Kill the fools or wait till they run
off then make your way to the east side of the bridge to challenge the 3rd 
stage boss of the game.

                            SUB-SECTION 6D: DOWNTOWN
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ITEMS: Nunchaku
ENEMIES: Strangler, Dirty Jack, Chain Gang, Red Mohawk, Crow Bar
BOSS: Skin Head

Travel east, fight the Stranglers and a pair of Dirty Jacks. Up ahead you'll
be greeted by Stranglers who drop from the catwalk above. Also you'll have 
more Stranglers who will exit from the 1st and 2nd doorways, as you pass. 
Between the doorways you will do battle with a Chain Gang and a Red Mohawk.
Once you clear the catwalk area, you will be greeted by another Chain Gang, 
followed by a Dirty Jack, further to the east. Up ahead is an area where Crow 
Bars drop from the roof. Beware that 4 Stranglers will exit apartment #214. If
you are without, there is a nunchaku located to the right of apartment #214. 
After dispatching a few more roof dropping Crow Bars, you'll run into the Skin
Head.

                         SUB-SECTION 6E: BIG BOSS HIDEOUT
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ITEMS: Nunchaku
ENEMIES: Strangler, Hit Man Joe
BOSS: Big Boss

The last stage of the game! It's also the shortest. Start by going east and 
take out the Strangler, followed by a Hit Man Joe. Pick him off and continue
east, crouch kicking the Stranglers before they can climb up. They travel in
groups of 3 or more and if they all climb up together, they will kill you. A
nunchaku marks the end of the "climbing Strangler gauntlet". Go east and leap
the gap (if you miss simply press up on the D-Pad). You will then be 
confronted by the game boss. Madonna can be found on the far east. After 
slaying the Big Boss, flip the lever to rescue Madonna and beat the game.

                                     BOSSES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AXE

The boss of the Main St. Market. This guy likes to grab hold of you and try to
cram a knuckle sandwich down your throat. Any attack will work against this 
boss. The best method is to pin him up against the van and just wail on him 
with the nunchaku. If he grabs you, just hold down the attack button with the 
respective turbo switch on the highest setting. This boss is worth 500pts.

TOUGH BROTHERS

The boss of the junkyard. These guys can be tough. They attack with jump kicks
and constantly perform somersaults off and onto the van. The best way to 
defeat these guys is to take up a crouching position approximately 1 nunchaku 
distance from the van, face it, and perform a crouch kick when one, or both of
the brothers land in front of you. They still might jump kick you to the back 
of the head, but once you get the positioning down, you'll be fine. Another 
reason for this position is that these guys can take some time to defeat. You
may even have your timer elapse while challenging this boss. If you are 
positioned correctly and do not stand up until after both brothers have died 
and vanished, you can finish the stage with no time remaining. This boss is 
worth a whopping 1000pts.

SPIKE BOSS

Lord of the Brooklyn Bridge. This guy initially attacks with an iron ball.
After a few strikes he will lose it and resort to kicks and a flurry of 
punches. This guy can be a pain if you lose control. The best method of attack
is to use a standing kick. Try to keep the boss on the right and like you did 
with Axe, pin him up against the van. It's a little trickier, but like with 
all the other bosses, it's all about positioning. Spike Boss' death yields you
another 500 pts.

Skin Head

This boss can be found in the downtown area. You will notice a strong 
resemblance to the 3rd area boss. When this fight starts Skin Head will be on
a catwalk tossing down sticks of exploding dynamite. These can be crouch 
kicked off the screen. Perform consecutive jump punch/nunchaku strikes on the 
boss to bring him off his platform. Once on the ground use the exact same 
method of attack as you did on his "twin", pinning him up against the 
stanchion as opposed to the van (which you might have spotted upon entering 
the area). Once on the ground Skin Head's attacks are identical to Spike 
Boss', this boss too, nets you 500 pts.

BIG BOSS

The final boss of the game and he really is big. He seems tougher than the 
other bosses because he doesn't really have a position you can take up to 
combat him. His attacks cannot be avoided and deal quite a bit of damage. The 
best method I have found is to move in close and perform rapid crouch kicks on 
his leg. This often times "traps" him and you can perform multiple strikes to
wear down his HP. This method works particularly well after you have just 
recovered from a lost life or credit. Alternately if you can manage to back 
the boss up against the lever, you can pin him and perform consecutive 
standing kicks. Either method works, but the more lives/credits you have the 
easier this battle is. Yeah, another 500 pts.

                                     ENEMIES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chain Gang

Found in the junkyard and downtown areas, the Chain Gang attacks with a length
of chain. His attack is pretty much identical to the Crow Bar. His attack can
too be avoided with a crouch. Punch him 4 times to beat him.

Crow Bar

Crow Bar attacks with an iron bar. His attack can be avoided with a crouch. 
Like all armed assailants, the best method of attack is to get in close and 
punch fast. He too requires 4 hits. Crow Bar can be found in areas 2 and 4.
He also makes an appearance as a sub-boss in stage 1.

Dirty Jack

This knife wielding thug can be found in the Main St and downtown areas. His 
attack is the most deadly of all the armed foes. He can quickly slash you 3 or
more times and completely eradicate your HP gauge. As always, 4 punches and he
is history.

Hell's Angel

This guy has a dual attack, but only if you defeat him. He approaches on a 
motorcycle and attempts to run you over. If he succeeds, then he comes back 
around and tries again. 2 strikes with the bike and you're done. His attack 
can be evaded with a well timed jump and Hell's Angel can also be defeated 
with an even more well-timed jump kick. If you take him off his bike though, 
do not walk into the explosion.

Hit Man Joe

Hit Man Joe can be found only in the odd numbered stages. He attacks with a 
pistol. His bullets can be blocked by the nunchaku or you can simply crouch to 
avoid his shot. After a short while, Joe will run off. You can however, choose
to use the old close in 4 punch method to eliminate him early. Be careful 
though, 2 shots and you're dead.

Red Mohawk

Red Mohawk attacks with his fists. He has a powerful punch and can quickly 
knock your HP down to nothing. The best method is to get in close and just 
punch him faster than he does you. 4 hits and this fool will go down. Red 
Mohawk can be encountered in areas 1,3, and 4.

Strangler

The Strangler is the default enemy and also the weakest. He attacks by 
grabbing the Vigilante and rapidly draining his HP. He can be found in all 5 
areas of the game. He can strike from above, below, and of course, the
left or right side. It only takes 1 hit to defeat a Strangler. If he manages
to grab you and starts sucking your life force, just keep pressing random 
directions in concert with Buttons I and II to shake him off.

GRAPHICS

With a name like "Turbo Grafx" I would hope the graphics are a step up. This 
is thankfully the case with Vigilante. The graphics are good in this game! 
Although they are insignificantly inferior to its arcade brother. Some of the
best examples of the excellent graphics of this game are the sky in the junk
yard area, the explosions in areas 3 and 4, and the depth in area 5.

SOUND

I like to have good motivating music to listen to while I play a game. I'd 
prefer that music come from my television and not my radio. The music to 
Vigilante isn't bad, nor is it exceptionally good. I'm not a professional 
musician or a paid music critic for that matter, but I know what I like. I'm 
pretty sure each of the 5 stages of this game has its own track, but it 
sounded almost like it was the same track either remixed or slightly altered
to sound different in each area. I like the variation on the 5th stage best.

SECONDARY GAME ELEMENTS

The control in this game is perfect! The Vigilante does what you tell him to
do immediately. It took a moment to get used to pressing up for jump, but with
only 2 buttons to work with and both of them used to attack, there really was
no other choice for the game developers. Good Job! The set-up of a game is also
very important to me. I look for consistency,originality, but most importantly 
flow. A game should gradually improve in difficulty, but should also remain 
consistent. Vigilante, demonstrates consistency at its simplest level. It 
presents a stage with a level boss. That is average. It however does have only 
1 sub-boss in the entire game. Had the game kept that trend it would have 
received a higher score. Also, there is no flow. The early stages have more 
bosses than the late stages. Nor is there any hint of originality. Simply 
average. Another game element that i deem important are the bosses. All the 
primary elements like sound, graphics, story, etc... are important, but they 
are just that; elements. The set-up is the skeleton of the game, but the 
bosses are the backbone. While the bosses in vigilante are by no means 
awesome, they offer enough challenge. The developers erred in the fluidity of
the bosses in this game. The first two challenges are great, but the recycling
of the 3rd boss on stage 4 and the mediocre game boss really hurt the score. 
Another important thing to me are items. Not only do I check for presence and
accountability, but I also look for usefulness; originality doesn't hurt 
either. Vigilante only has one item in the entire game: The nunchaku. This is
of course a weapon upgrade and a very useful item. More weapons would have 
made this game shine.

CONTENT

When I speak of content, I basically consider challenge, length, and replay 
value Challenge isn't too terribly important in a video game. Unfortunately in
a fighting style game, such as Vigilante, without a descent challenge, most
everything else goes down the crapper as well. While I found the entire game
to be way too easy, I only found 2 stages to present any kind of a challenge.
Those were the opening of stage 3 and the closing of stage 5, during the final
boss sequence. Another downside of Vigilante is its length. It could be the 
shortest game in the history of video games! It has only 5 stages, and no 
sub-stages or bonus stages. The entire game can be completed in less than 10 
minutes. I swear I thought I got ripped off and accidentally bought the 
demo version of this game. I'm still not sure. There has to be more. There is 
no second quest, no secrets, no reason to play it again, except to kill 
another 10 minutes.

STORY

This game's story is rather clichéd. I could over look that though, I mean 
fight the enemy and rescue the girl/princess/whatever... We've heard it a 
million times. While it's always enough to make me want to punish the enemy, I
think that if a game is going to use this age-old scenario, it needs to have a
little more spice. The main problem with this game's story is that I find it 
hard to believe that a gang as large as this one just goes around kidnapping 
innocent girlfriends of people named Vigilante. It's just too weak! In a word: 
disappointing! And the ending just sux.

Q: You said that (insert enemy) should/shouldn't be here but I encountered/ 
didn't encounter (insert enemy) it.

A: Depending on the rate at which you advance random enemies may or may not 
appear in a specific area. If you move quickly some enemies will not appear.
If you proceed slowly more enemies will appear.

Q: Will there be a sequel to this game and will you write a guide for it?

A: Probably not, and no; respectively. This game is now available for the Wii
in its original TG16 emulated version via the virtual console. Fighting games
have evolved since this game's time and a sequel would be identical to others 
of the genre. It would not be the same as the original and using this game to
create a franchise would not be intelligent. I wouldn't buy it so there would 
be no guide produced from my pen.

game sound tight. I'm not an idiot! Admit it, it's just a facade and secretly 
you think this game sux. Why did you waste your time writing this guide?

A: If you're also asking if I think the game sux, that's 2 questions. But 
whatever, I think the game should have been much longer. I don't particularly
like it, cuz I don't like fighting games, but no freak, I don't think the game
sux. For your second question, I only wrote a guide because I had mastered 
this game and wanted a simple game to practice my guide writing skills. I 
don't consider any project a waste. And don't call me dude, you can call me 
Sgt.

A: No, if it had been, the story would have revolved around her bodyguard, not

Vigilante is an average old school fighting game. By today's standards, it 
probably would not survive in the ring past the 1st or 2nd round. It's an
excellent 1st videogame for someone who has never played a video game before.
It's probably not suitable for young children due to violent content, but 
there is no bloody gore. I feel cheated after purchasing, playing through, and 
completing the game in under 1 hour my first time ever playing this game. Here
it is over 15 years later and I still play it every now and then. I still 
insist that I don't like this game, but there must be some reason why I still
own it and continue to come back to it.

Here are some tips for playing this game that I have come up with over the 
years:

1) Always keep moving! The faster you move the fewer enemies you encounter.

2) If you want a higher score advance slower, always use punches or jump 
kicks, and try to take out the boss quickly to maximize your time remaining 
bonus. 

3) Always try to "pin" the boss

4) Utilize the turbo switches by placing them both on the highest setting.

5) If you are having trouble with the final boss, save all your lives and 
credits for the final battle. Once he is defeated, the game ends and you lose
them anyway, so there is no reasoning behind saving them.

6) If you die before the final battle pressing Run+Select will perform a 
software reset.

Reorganized my guide and cleaned it up quite a bit. Alphabetized the enemies
section. Revamped the review section: 1)It now only contains five catagories, 
but all the previous content is intact. 2)Assigned a letter grade to each 
catagory. 3)The overall score is still out of 10 for simplicity's sake. Also 
added an actual FAQ section. A few other random changes here and there, but 
nothing else major.

After checking the accuracy of my guide after posting, I discovered some minor
discrepancies and decided to correct them. The major one being the randomness
of some enemies in various stages.
