Can the Wii U update in background?

I mean like, I hear the update takes a whole lot of time to do, and I was wondering if the first update can be done while I am playing, and if so, will the update progress be saved if I turn off the wii U while the update is in the background?

You can download in the background but no saving progress; you have to download it all in one go.
