Can you use the Wii U gamepad for Wii games?
As the question header states, just wanted to know if anyone tried using the Wii U gamepad to play any Wii games and if it works or not.

No, you can't.
For wii, wiiware and any currently available virtual console games, you need to boot your system in a seperate 'wii-mode'. This wii-mode only supports what the original wii supported (so wiimote, nunchuck, classic controller, wii speak and balance board). In this mode, the gamepad will be powered off.
