Help with using a second remote for two players?

I am trying to set up a second player using a second remote on the wii. The first player registers ok but the second one forms a 'shadow' hand and does not interact with the log on so when you come to play the first player scores and is saved b ut the second player does not seem to exist! I have tried logging out and pressing the house button to register both remotes then log back into the game but you still get the shadow for the second player? Help?
