Well, hello there, and welcome to my FAQ for the grand old Stalk Market. Yes,
the greatest money making technique deserves it's own FAQ. That is because all
the majority of what Animal Crossing players do to earn money is manipulate the
    Stalk Market.

Here, you will find just what the Stalk Market is, how to use it for your
own good, and save Blathers the look of despair when you take that fossil away
from him. You can even stop mass harvesting the fruit population of your town.

First things first, what on earth is the Stalk Market? Put simply, it's
Nintendo's version of the Stock Market. Ah... you now see the similarity?
Stock, Stalk? Either way, the basis is that you can buy stalks (turnips) from
someone called Joan that you can sell for (hopefully) a profit.

Joan is the start of all things Stalk. She visits your town every sunday
morning from 6:00am to noon, then packs up and leaves. You can buy white
turnips or red turnips from her.

And now we have the one of two most important dialogues in financial success
(the other one being Tom Nook's).

    -Hoo, hello there!
-I've been selling turnips here on Sunday morns for 'bout 60 years now. For
     turnips. come see ol' Joan!
-All right, my wee radish. What do you want to hear about?

       (White turnips)

-So, today, the asking price is ??? bells per turnip. What do you think,
           kiddo?

             (I'm buying!)

-All right then. How many do you want kiddo? I sell them in
                  bunches of ten.

*You now buy white turnips in bunches of ten*

The ??? is important, because it tells you how much turnips cost. You must sell
them above this number to make a profit.

You can also buy red turnips as well, but they are not as mass profitable, as
I'm going to state in the "Red Turnips" section ahead.

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
                                              -
       6. White Turnips -
                                              -
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

White Turnips are the main money maker. You can buy as many as you want,
providing you have the finances. You can make more than 4 times the amount of
money you invest in them! But unfortunately, you can also lose everything, as
they spoil the saturday after you buy them.

You can buy them from Joan for the price she sells them in bunches of ten. You
should have a few thousand bells to buy enough to make a nice big profit.

Tom Nook (the racoon who runs the shop in your town), buys turnips off you for
whatever the current price from the Stalk Market is. It can be as low as 30 to
as high as 600. His prices change twice every day, one price in the morning
(before noon) and a price in the afternoon (after noon). He doesn't buy on
Sundays (the Stalk Market is closed). The trick is to sell above what you paid
    Joan for.

You can buy more, sell for more, buy more, and sell for more... and so on.
You can even get to the point where you spend a million on them and make two
million by the end of the week.

    -----------------------
       Risks & Rewards -
    -----------------------

You can chose whether to invest alot into turnips. It's the gambler's risk. You
may lose some, lose everything, or win all. Since turnips rot at the end of the
Saturday after buying them, and thus losing all their value, it's best to sell
them at a lower price than you got them, rarther than losing everything.

However, if you play your cards right, you can draw out the bank with what you
    gain.

It's all about how willing you are to gamble your bells away. If you look in
the "Research" section below in this FAQ, I'll explain the chances of a
    possible profit through the week.

    -----------------------
       Hints & Help -
    -----------------------

You can set just a small amount of your bells into turnips if you want, and
make profits through other ways, such as foreign fruits, or fishing. A variety
of financial plans would get you a definate and wealthy profit.

The old table glitch that was in 'Animal Crossing: Wild World' does not exist
anymore. For those of you who do not know it involved an obscure way of placing
White Turnips on tables in your house, which then they would never rot. But,
alas it is with us no more.

If you time-travel backwards using any method, all held turnips will spoil.
Also, if the in-game clock and the Wii System clock are desycronised enough,
Joan will always sell turnips above 96 bells and Nook will never buy turnips
above 96 bells rendering this profit process useless. Resyncronise them using
the clock by the side of your bed.

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
                                              -
       7. Red Turnips -
                                              -
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Red Turnips arn't really part of the Stalk Market, as their price does not
fluctuate. Instead, their value is decided by how big they are. Joan always
charges 1,000 bells a seed. So, let's see if we can earn ourselves a bit of
    cash, shall we?

    -----------------------
       Risks & Rewards -
    -----------------------

Now, you can only buy one red turnip seed from Joan per week. This, you plant
like a regular flower, and let it grow. And now, for the catch... *drumroll*
You have to maintain it EVERY single day from planting. This means watering it.
If you miss just one day, it will die and it's value will turn to dust. If you
can maintain it for six days, it will be as big as it can get. Dig it up with
a shovel and sell it to Nook for a nice few bells.

Now, if you want to make a profit, you must water it for at least 3 days. The
precise value of a red turnip since planted is listed below.

     Days Bells
    ------------------------------
      0* 2 bells
      1** 100 bells
      2 500 bells
      3 2,000 bells
      4 4,000 bells
      5 8,000 bells
      6 or more 16,000 bells

    *Same day as planted

    **Day after planted

    -----------------------
       Hints & Help -
    -----------------------

Red Turnips can be a good way to kick-start your finances into the Stalk
Market (to buy loads of White Turnips, to sell for alot).

Don't worry, once you've dug one up, it won't spoil like White Turnips do.

Un/Fortunately, if you time travel, the same glitch from Animal Crossing: Wild
World is renacted: Joan will constantly have no Red Turnip seeds each week. The
way to fix this is (again) is to resyncronise the Wii system clock and the
    in-game clock.

If a red turnip spoils, you can revive it by watering it with a 'silver
watering can' (not the one you can buy from nook). This sets the days planted
back to zero, however. But look up, you've saved 1,000 bells floating out the
    window.

Now, I've been conducting a bit of research into the area of Nook's buying
prices for White Turnips throughout weeks. I decided to perform this since
Liquify first performed an investigation into the patterns in his 'Animal
Crossing: Wild World' FAQ, which can be found here:

    http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/ds/file/920786/40130

Now I thought, since this was a new game to the series, even though it is
almost identical in game mechanics, it must have a few changes. So I proceded
to search for the patterns in this game, City Folk.

       Patterns              =-
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I have noticed a fair few patterns threw the few weeks I've seen already.
Like Liquefy, I noticed four main patterns, which, nicely, are exactly
the same as the ones in 'Wild World'.

    -----------------------
       Decresing -
    -----------------------

This pattern is the one you want to avoid. It starts at somewhere between 70
and 90 in my experience, and continues to fall by 6, 5, 4, 3, or 2 each time.

    Here are a few examples:

    Mon | Tues | Weds | Thurs | Fri | Sat
am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm
    ===================================================
    84 78 | 73 69 | 64 62 | 58 54 | 49 46 | 42 39
    92 88 | 82 77 | 73 68 | 64 59 | 54 49 | 46 41
    75 72 | 69 67 | 63 59 | 56 51 | 48 46 | 43 40

    -----------------------
       The Mountain -
    -----------------------

This is the big money maker. In this pattern, it starts off with a decresing
pattern, then interupted by two run-up prices, then the peak, then two run-down
prices, then resuming the decresing pattern.

    Here are a few examples:

    Mon | Tues | Weds | Thurs | Fri | Sat
am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm
    =====================================================
    72 69 | 66 62 | 58 55 | 85 184 | 501 147 | 87 75
    75 71 | 67 64 | 98 193 | 421 201 | 91 78 | 74 71
    70 66 | 62 58 | 54 51 | 91 155 | 486 177 | 95 70

    -----------------------
       The Hill -
    -----------------------

This one can still turn out a profit, but not as huge as the Mountain. But,
however, the time it is above Joan's usual price is (usually) longer. It is a
decresing pattern, then a three price run-up, the the peak. It then has a
one-price run-down, then back to the decresing pattern.

    Here are a few examples:

    Mon | Tues | Weds | Thurs | Fri | Sat
am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm
    ======================================================
    79 76 | 71 68 | 65 101 | 135 151 | 163 139 | 76 73
    75 72 | 67 64 | 98 139 | 166 172 | 128 72 | 67 62
    84 79 | 75 70 | 66 61 | 59 92 | 120 149 | 172 103

    -----------------------
       Random Sequence -
    -----------------------

This, as the title states, is just random. In my experiment so far, I have
found that the prices in this fluctuates between 49 and 149. I havn't enough
results to conclude a range of highest prices or monday prices.

    Here are a few examples:

    Mon | Tues | Weds | Thurs | Fri | Sat
am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm
    =======================================================
    129 64 | 57 52 | 82 115 | 87 91 | 62 58 | 91 109
    89 61 | 51 90 | 101 98 | 67 91 | 132 73 | 59 102
    102 78 | 83 54 | 129 72 | 72 51 | 119 131 | 78 62

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
       Others                =-
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

This is where I will display any unusual or one-off patterns that appear.
They usually may just be very obscure versions of the main patterns, like
    the 'Cliff' one.

    -----------------------
       Cliff -
    -----------------------

Yes, this one was quite unusual when it appeared, but upon further
investigation, it appears to be a oddity of the 'Hill' pattern.

    Mon | Tues | Weds | Thurs | Fri | Sat
am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm | am pm
    ======================================================
    84 78 | 73 69 | 64 60 | 129 143 | 155 155 | 155 86

I named this the 'Cliff' because of the rise, linger, then the sudden drop.
It is the Hill pattern because of the decresing start, 5 high prices, and the
fourth one is the highest. It just happens that the two around it did not
    increase or decrease.

    -----------------------
       Low Random Seq. -
    -----------------------

This one was a bit perculiar because of the numbers. It is the random pattern,
but it never increased above 100, thus not a big profit pattern.

    Mon | Tues | Weds | Thurs | Fri | Sat

    ===================================================

       Chance of patterns =-
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

In my research, I have found these values of chance for the four different
    patterns:

    Decreasing -=- 17%
    Mountain -=- 30%
    Hill -=- 24%
    Rollarcoaster -=- 29%

       Chance of prices =-
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

These are the figures of the highest prices for the 100 weeks:

    Below 70 -=- 0%
    70+ -=- 100%
    100+ -=- 84%
    120+ -=- 62%
    140+ -=- 57%
    160+ -=- 44%
    180+ -=- 35%
    200+ -=- 30%
    250+ -=- 24%
    300+ -=- 17%
    350+ -=- 15%
    400+ -=- 13%
    450+ -=- 8%
    500+ -=- 4%
    550+ -=- 3%
    600+ -=- 1%
    650+ -=- 0%
    700+ -=- 0%

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
       Best Days =-
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

So, here we are. From my findings, these are the best days to sell, in
    desending order:

    Friday am
    Monday am
    Thurday am
    Thurday pm
    Friday pm

Mon Tues Weds Thurs Fri Sat
am pm am pm am pm am pm am pm am pm
    19 0 0 0 2 6 18 16 20 15 3 1 = 100 weeks

It is very close between them all and I'll need to do another 100 weeks of
time travelling to find a clear winner.
