"Guitar Hero III Stikes a Star Powered Chord of Awesome"
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is the third entry of the critically acclaimed, peripheral based rock and roll series, Guitar Hero. GHIII has done everything necessary in being an excellent second sequel. With a new guitar, new tracks, and online play, GHIII creates one of the most genuine and addicting experiences in gaming.
Graphics: Although the game lacks the higher resolution expected of next-gen video games, it makes up with killer presentation, unique art style, and a series best level of ambiance. All of the characters have a distinctive flair reflecting all sorts of genres and sub-cultures. Some minor hiccups include the rigid animation of the guitar, but no one is truly interested in the pretty colors in the background. 8/10
Audio: Easily the most diverse and well selected songs of the series. Artists range from "The Who" to "Slipknot." "Santana" to "Kiss." The game boasts over 70 tracks ranging from 60's classic rock to face melting rifts of neo-metal. One great addition to GHIII is the number of original tracks in the game. Even though the covers sound great, nothing can beat the hard knuckled screams of the Beastie Boys. 10/10
Gameplay: The core of the game remains exactly the same, making some feel this game as just 100$ for 70 new songs. However, the additions of online play and a new game mode called guitar 'battle' provides almost infinite replay ability. The wiimote powered wireless controller unfortunately has some kinks. Reports of broken whammy-bars and unresponsive buttons are a little disconcerting. My own personal copy of the game came with a fully functioning guitar. One true criticism is of the wiimote. In theory it was a cool idea, but the wiimote is to sensitive, activating star power on its own. Even the sound coming out of the speaker is lame and poorly executed. Wiimote aside, the gameplay by itself is amazing and when you actually playing you hardly notice (unless your whammy bar is actually broken). 9/10
Certainly one of the most addicting games of the year as it makes an unparalleled experience that very few games can recreate. If you have the ability to buy it on the Xbox 360 do so because it has a much simpler online process that is built out of Xbox live. All of the versions are equally solid, but be wary with the Wii because you might not like the use of the wiimote as you play.
