"A great game, but it doesn't add much to the series"

Guitar Hero's back with plenty of new features, like a new guitar, an awesome soundtrack and the same great gameplay the series is renowned for. Here's my verdict on Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock.

Story

Unfortunately, Guitar Hero III's storyline is hardly creative, you're a wannabe Guitar Hero trying to make it big with his band and is executed terribly. The storyline is told by a bunch of cheap thrown together cutscenes, that hardly make any sense all. It doesn't quite meet the verdict I'm afraid. Regardless, the story doesn't matter anyway.
5/10

Graphics/Visuals

Unfortunately the graphics in Guitar Hero III do suffer from a few flaws. The audience character look and move just downright terrible. They look like a sea of cardboard cut-outs swaying in the breeze. Other then a few other minor flaws the rest of Guitar Hero III looks good.
7/10

Sound/Audio

The soundtrack in Guitar Hero III is by far the best so far in the series. This time there's over 70 different songs! You'll be rocking out this time to Kiss's “Rock & Roll all Nite”, Tenacious D's “The Metal” , Muse's “Knight of Cydonia”, The Killer's “When You Were Young” , Metallica's “One” , Pat Benatar's “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” , Alice Cooper's “School's Out” , Cream's “Sunshine of Your Love” , The Rolling Stone's “Paint It, Black” , Pearl Jam's “Even Flow” , Sex Pistol's “Anarchy in the U.K.” , Guns N' Rose's “Welcome to the Jungle” , Living Colour's “Cult of Personality” (recorded by the band themselves, with a new, harder, solo), Red Hot Chili Pepper's “Suck my Kiss” , DragonForce's “Through the Fire and Flames” and plenty more that I really don't have the space to list!

Sound: 9/10
Music: 9/10

Gameplay

If you've never played a Guitar Hero game before, I'll explain how it works. Guitar Hero III is a rhythm game in which, you press buttons and strum with a little plastic bar in time with coloured notes scrolling down the screen. Fans of the series will indeed be very pleased with what Guitar Hero 3 has to offer.

One of the biggest new features in Guitar Hero 3 is the inclusion of online-play. The online play is great as it allows you to rock out with people from all over the world. The difficulty level is higher then the previous games. A few songs in easy mode feel like Guitar Hero II's medium. Some songs in hard play like Guitar Hero II's expert. And some songs in expert seem impossible to finish. Multiplayer, is of course, fantastic. Unfortunately you'll have to buy another Guitar to get the most out of it, playing with the Wiimote isn't much fun at all.

By far the games biggest flaw is the the new Boss Battle mode. The objective of this mode is to try and make your opponent lose by using special power-ups and vice-versa. It's less fun then it looks… Why? It's more of a chore then fun. I'm not saying that Boss battles are terrible and a downright disgrace to the series, they're simply put, not much fun.

Controls 'Wireless Les Paul Guitar'

The miniature Les Paul is fantastic. It's smooth, wireless and feels much more comfortable then the previous Gibson SG and X-Plorer models. It has a detachable neck for easy transportation, and the faceplate can be customised with stickers included in the box! Exclusive to the Wii version, the Guitar has a slot to snap the Wiimote in. This adds in a few extra features like rumble functions and Wiimote sounds. It even has a little control stick for navigating the Wii's menus!

In Conclusion

While it doesn't add to much to the series, Guitar Hero 3 is still truly a great game and a worthy addition to the Guitar Hero franchise. A must have for veterans of the series and a good place to start for newcomers.
