Introduction

Mario Kart Wii is a racing game made by Nintendo, which happens to be based off of Mario. The game consists of 26 playable characters, 36 Vehicles, and 19 Items. On top of that, there is a grand total of 12 racers that can race on the same track at the same time, which is surprisingly large when considering the fact that 12 items can be shot off at once. At times, things may get so chaotic that the only way out of it is to use an advanced technique or shortcut. So, in this FAQ I will tell you about every shortcut and big technique that I know about. A lot of these techniques may seem very easy to most of you, however there are quite a few difficult Techniques and Shortcuts out there that may provide a challenge to some. In this guide, I will tell you about all of the shortcuts and techniques that I have heard of through my experience with Mario Kart Wii.

Commonly Used Terms

Automatic Drift: A drift type that allows for you to make much easier and smoother turns, but at a sacrifice of losing the abilities to mini-turbo during turns and hop.

Manual Drift: A drift type that allows for you to mini-turbo during turns, but at a sacrifice of slowing down to the extreme if you choose to not mini-turbo during a turn. Manual Drift also gives you the ability to hop.

Inward Drift: Inward Drift is a drift style that goes with some bikes, and allows for you to make sharp turns easier than if you were to use an outside drift vehicle.

Outward Drift: Outward Drift is a drift style that goes with all karts and some bikes and does not allow for you to make sharp turns with out some difficulty. Outside Drift is extremely noticeable if you use Manual Drift, but it is less noticeable if you use Automatic Drift.

Glitch Shortcuts: A glitch shortcut is a shortcut that occurs through one exploiting a part of the game that has been overlooked, with the result being a shortcut that allows for one to finish a race through extremely obscure and unfair means. Glitch shortcuts exist on several tracks, however the only that I have ever been able to pull off has been the Grumble Volcano glitch.

Stats

The Stats in the game play a very important part in a race. Depending on how high or low each stat is for the character and/or vehicle you chose to use, may cause serious repercussions. There are 7 stats in the game and they are; Speed, Weight, Acceleration, Mini-Turbo, Handling, Off-Road, and Drift.

Speed

Description: Speed determines how fast or slow your character is allowed to go in a race. The lower the speed stat the slower you go, and the higher the speed stat the faster you go.

Importance: Speed is a very important stat in the game, because it determines the maximum amount of speed you are allowed to travel at. Characters with a stat bonus in speed are often chose online and for Time Trials for this reason.

Weight

Description: Weight simply determines how heavy or light you are.

Importance: Weight is semi-important because the heavier you are gives you an advantage over the lighter characters because you have the ability to push them around and on courses like Rainbow Road, this can be devastating. However, on track like Luigi Circuit, the Weight Stat is not that likely to cause such an affect.

Acceleration

Description: Acceleration is how fast or slow you are able to recover from a hit.

Importance: In this game there is such a thing as an SSMT (Stand Still Mini-Turbo), which allows you to gain a speed boost while, as the name gives away standing still. So, this renders the Acceleration stat basically useless most of the time. More on the SSMT will be explained later on.

Mini-Turbo

Description: The Mini-Turbo stat is only in use when using Manual Drift, as Automatic Drift does not allow for Mini-Turbos when making turns. If the Mini-Turbo stat is high you will get a rather large boost after set off your turbo, however if the Mini-Turbo stat is low you only get a miniscule boost after you set off your turbo.

Importance: I have not used Manual enough to give an honest opinion on this stat, but if I had to guess I would say that it is only semi-important. Clarification for this is needed.

Handling

Description: Handling is what decides how tight of a turn you can normally make.

Importance: Although, I am not still not entirely clear on this stat, I can say that it appears to be Semi-Important. Clarification for this is needed.

Drift

Description: Drift is what decides how tight of a turn you can make while drifting. A vehicle that has high drift is called an Inside Drift Vehicle and a vehicle that has low drift is called an Outside Drift Vehicle. All karts are Outside Drift Vehicles while bikes consist of both Inward and Outward Drift Vehicles.

Importance: This stat is importance because on tracks with a lot of tight turns (Rainbow Road, Warios Gold Mine, etc) you will likely fall off track if you are not experienced with Outward Drift Vehicles. So, I recommend you either use an Inside Drift Bike, or practice with the Outside Drift Vehicle before going online.

Off-Road

Description: This stat is what decides how fast or slow you are allowed to drive while on an off-road terrain (grass, mud, water, etc).

Importance: In my opinion, this stat is the most important stat in the game for some tracks (Shy Guy Beach, Sherbet Land, etc). The reason for this is because if you combine a character with high off-road and a vehicle with high off-road (Toadette/Magikruiser), you will barely slows down when driving on an off-road terrain.

Bonuses

In Mario Kart Wii each character and vehicle has a variety of stats. However not all stats are available for one to see through just playing the game; in fact, each character and vehicle has a few bonuses. This section is where I will show you all the bonuses that each character and vehicle has.

Slipstreaming

Slipstreaming is a speed boost gained by driving directly behind another racer for a small period of time. This speed boost is almost always enough for you to pull ahead of at one racer.

Sandbagging

Sandbagging is when you purposely stay in the back of the pack in an attempt to get a speed item that can help you out drastically at a certain point in a race. People often sandbag at the beginning of the race, at the beginning of the 2nd lap, and at the beginning of the 3rd lap. Items that are commonly sandbagged for are Lightning, Stars, Golden Mushrooms, and possibly Mega Mushrooms and Triple Mushrooms. Getting a Star is probably your best bet because you can then combine it with another item box if you use just before you hit the item box. This can possibly score you another great item, which should put you in great shape for a top three ending. However, sandbagging can be very risky, because if you get a Blooper, Shell, POW Block, Banana, Fake Item Box, Bob-Omb, and even a Single Mushroom or Bullet Bill at timesÉ you will be in bad shape.

Launch Boost (Rocket Start)

By accelerating just as the 2 in the start of race countdown is starting to disappear, you can gain a speed boost. It may take a while to master the timing, but it is really good for you to know how this is done because this technique is used by almost everyone online.

Lakitu Boost (Recover Boost)

If you happen to fall off the track at any point in a race you can gain a boost by accelerating just as land back on the track. The timing for this one may take a little more practicing to master than the Launch Boost, but once again this technique is used by almost everyone online.

Dodging Red Shells

It may seem very obvious to most of you that simply simply dragging an item behind you can dodge Red Shells. However, that is not the only way that one can dodge a Red Shell. The other way that one can avoid a Red Shell is by leading it into a wall or projectile that happens to be near you. This is much easier on track such as GBA Bowser Castle 3, where one is constantly making sharp turns. However, if you are on a track with not many turns, you can still lead the shell into a wall or projectile, although it is much harder. You can do this by swiftly driving closer to a wall so that you are almost touching it, and then just as swiftly driving away from the wall. If a projectile happens to be near you, then you can avoid the Red Shell by driving in front of it, however from my knowledge this only works if the Red Shell happens to be close to you when you drive in front of the projectile.

Dodging Blue Shells

Blue Shells are probably the most annoying item for almost everyone who has played this game. However, there is a way for you to dodge them. If you happen to have a Mushroom or any other speed=inducing item, you can dodge the blue shell by timing your use of the item with the exact time that the blue shell is going to strike. There is a ridiculously small amount of time where doing this will work, so even after practicing for a while, it is still very likely that one will mess up their dodge.

Target Shocking

Target Shocking is when you use Lightning to purposely hit somebody when it would affect them the most, such as when they are over a gap or when they are crossing an off-road section on the last lap.

Dodging Lightning (Shock Dodge)

To expand on Target Shocking, there is a way for one to dodge Lightning. If you happen to have a Star or Bullet Bill activated when the Lightning strikes, you will completely avoid the attack.

Now the timing for when Lightning strikes depends on luck for the most part, because people use Lightning in many different ways. In lower VR rooms, people are more likely to use Lightning as soon as they get it, which means that you should activate the Star or Bullet Bill right after you see the 11th or 12th racer cross an item box. In higher VR rooms people will likely use Lightning in a smarter way, such as right before a gap or off-road shortcut, which means that you should activate the Lightning right before one of the previously mentioned areas. On tracks like Luigi Circuit, timing your use of the Star or Bullet Bill and avoiding Lightning on the last lap almost always has great results.

Note: This also works with the Mega Mushroom, except instead of completely avoiding Lightning; one will just be shrunken back to normal size.

Note: You will completely avoid Lightning if you happen to be in a cannon (DK Summit, Rainbow Road, DK Mountain, DK?s Jungle Parkway) or if you are recovering from falling off track.

Dodging POW Blocks

Dodging POW Blocks are based upon timing. By pressing the trick button just as the POW is about to strike you can avoid the full blast of the item, and just spin out, however you will still lose your item, unless you happen to be in the air, where of course nothing will happen. I personally just span the trick button when I see a POW appear on the screen, which I find to be much easier than just timing your press with the second or third thump of the POW. POWs will probably be a lot harder for you to avoid if you are heading towards a sharp turn, or if the ink from a Blooper is on your screen.

Noob Cube

A Noob Cube is when you purposely stay in front of someone with Triple Red Shells and sometimes Triple Green Shells, in order to keep them from passing you. This will often put the racer you are keeping behind you in a bad situation, because they will be unable to get ahead of you with getting hit at most times, and they will start falling farther and farther away from the pack if they can not find a way past you.

Super Throw

This technique is only possible when using Manual, and to perform it correctly, you have to first hop and then throw your item when you reach the peak of the hop. This is possible with Bananas, Fake Item Boxes, and Bob-Ombs. This is good for sniping people that are far ahead of you with the item that you happen to throw.

Stand Still Mini-Turbo (SSMT)

To SSMT, you gotta hold down both the acceleration and reverse buttons at the same time until you get sparks. You should NOT move in any direction while doing this, or it will cancel out your attempt to SSMT.

Difficulty = 0

Towards the end of the course, there will be an off-road area with a ramp. Simply use a mushroom to get to the ramp and thatÕs it.

Difficulty = 1

At the area with all the pipes, use a mushroom to cut across the entire offroad section. Make sure you use the mushroom behind all the pipes to avoid hitting one of them.

Difficulty = 0

At the beginning there are a bunch of off-road areas. Simply use a mushroom to cut across them.

Difficulty = 5

Near the beginning of the course, you will a large mountain this is behind a bunch of bouncy mushrooms. There is a way to actual get onto the mountain, and drive around it so that you can skip around 75% of the course. To do this you need to trick off the mushroom, while pressing the down button. Once you get on the mountain, it is a matter of driving across the right spots to make sure you stand on it. Video recommended.

Difficulty = 1

At the very beginning there are two mushrooms that are not apart of the track. Use a mushroom towards the edge and you'll land on the mushroom, and be launched up to the next one and land safely on the bridge.

Difficulty = 4

After the cave part of the course there will be a huge gap. You have to use a mushroom first to get your speed going, then you start a wheelie followed by a slight hop (do this by pressing the drift button). Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 0

Use mushrooms at the mud area to get across faster.

Difficulty = 2

Towards the end of the course you will see a small pond area. To cross that use a mushroom right before the last bump, then immediately trick. If done right you will be able to get across the pond. Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 0

Use a mushroom to cross the off-road area with the Chain Chomp. Use the ramp if you only have 1 mushroom but do not use the ramp if you have 2-3 mushrooms.

SPOILER! Highlight to View

Difficulty = 5

At the very end of the track there will be a bunch of trees to your left. Turn so that you are facing the second to last one before the finish line. Then SSMT and use a mushroom at the same time and clip the tree. If done correctly you should fly over the mountain that is behind the tree and land on another part of the track. You should then turn around and continue driving. Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 0

After the first set of escalators, you will see a gap in the wall. Go through the gap using a mushroom to save a little time. You can expand on this shortcut by driving across the rug to your right, instead of going back down to the first floor. To do that you need Triple Mushrooms, a Golden Mushroom, a Mega Mushroom, or a Star.

SPOILER! Highlight to View

Difficulty = 5

Also, at the first set of escalators, there is a glitch that you can do. To do this you need to head towards the escalator that is on the left. When you get directly in front of the bottom of the escalator you should turn to your left. You should then SSMT into the left railing of the escalator, while using a mushroom. You should then trick off the railing. If done correctly you should jump over the ropes to your left, and end up in an entirely gray area. After landing in the gray area, you then need to find where you are going. To do this you need to head for the blue area, which is to the left of the middle. It is rather hard to explain, but you should know when you found it. From there on the blue area should lead you to where you need to go. Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 0

After the cannon simply use a mushroom to cut through the pinkish snow.

Difficulty = 1

After the bumpy area, there will be a part with two gaps. The first gap can be passed by just simply driving off the course at a reasonable amount of speed.

Difficulty = 3

To expand on that sc, there is a second one. This one requires for you to stop before cutting across the first gap, to make sure you will hit the fence. After that you drive off the course again to cross the second gap. Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 1

Right at the beginning of the course, there is a slightly elevated area. You can trick off that to save a little bit of time.

Difficulty = 1

Towards the end of track, you will see an area with minecarts going through. You go through that same area, to get to another area with item boxes and zip pads.

SPOILER! Highlight to View

Difficulty = 5

At the very beginning of the track, you should turn around. After that, you should come across a pipe that is a little below the left of the track. What you need to do is hit the pipe in such a way that you land near the railroad part of the track. If you manage to do that all right, you will then need to turn around again, and drive right into the fence, to your left. You need to hit the fence at a very specific spot for a lap to count. Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 0

At the beginning of the course you will see a staircase. Use a mushroom to go across that are. Of course you can still do it without a mushroom, but it would be a little slower.

Difficulty = 0

Before the pipe that goes into the water there is a offroad area with a red shell on it, use a mushroom to cut across it

Difficulty = 1

At the end of the course there is a minor waterfall, use a mushroom to get across the area. Be careful because its possible to get sucked off the course if you mess up

Difficulty = 0

At the beginning of the course, there will be an off-road area towards the right of the course (left if your playing on mirror mode). Use a mushroom to get across to find some zip pads and item boxes.

Difficulty = 5

At the area where fireballs starting coming down, you will see a huge rock in the middle of the lava. Use a mushroom to bounce of the side of the rock and to the other side of the track. Video Recommended.

SPOILER! Highlight to View

Difficulty = 4

At the very beginning of the race there will be a rock directly to the left of where you are. When racing in Time Trials you will be able to get onto the rock by turning left and using your mushroom to boost you onto the rock, however if you are racing online you will not be starting with any mushrooms. So, what you have to do is turn around and drive right into the rock behind you, which ends with you falling into the lava and re-spawning on top of the rock you drove into. What you do now is SSMT until you get sparks, you should then release the turbo while driving off the course onto the rock to your now upper-left, if done right you should land on the the rock. Now the hard part begins, in order for the game to register your laps around the rock, you need to drive around it in a VERY specific way. There are three checkpoints that you need to drive over in order to complete a lap. Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 0

At the area with the Pokeys use a mushroom to get past the whole next turn.

Difficulty = 2

At the beginning of the track use a mushroom and hop right over the off-road section to the left. If done right you will jump right over the off-road section and back onto the track.

Difficulty = 0

Use a mushroom to cut across the entire sand pit area on the third lap.

Difficulty = 4

Use 3 mushrooms to skip over the giant sand area at the right of the area with the zipper pads, which is directly after the sand pit. This is rather hard to pull off though, and to do so you need to have precise aim when it comes to hitting the shortcut. You should track off the zipper pad closest to the sand area, while using one of your mushrooms. If you manage to get up on the sand to your right, you will need to make use of your other 2 mushrooms to get across without slowing down. You also will need to time your drift accordingly. Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 0

Use a mushroom to cut across the very last turn in the course.

Difficulty = 1

Drive off the right cliff at the start to avoid the cars. You will eventually reach a ramp that you gotta be careful on to avoid falling off the track.

Difficulty = 0

Boost threw the first mud pit with the mechanical Bowser.

Difficulty = 1

If you opt to take the first jump ramp in the mechanical Bowser room, you will have enough speed to get threw the second mud pit without any speed items.

SPOILER! Highlight to View

Difficulty = 5

Towards the end of the course, there will be a staircase and a zipper. If you hit the upper-right corner of the zipper in such a way you will fly up and land on a higher level of the course, skipping a large amount of the track. There is a circle on the ground that you can use to help align yourself with. Other than that, I really not sure on how this is done. Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 4

At the very beginning of the track, before the large hill, you will have the ability to get down the hill faster. This is called a moonjump, and to do you have to hop at just the right time before you actually start going down the hill. Once in the air, I am pretty sure that you have to hold the down button to help you remain in the air. If done correctly you will land on a section of the course that is a little after the large hill. Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 2

Before the figure 8 section use the jump ramp. Doing this will give you enough speed to get trick over the to figure 8 circles.

Difficulty = 4

After the figure 8 section there will be a gap, use a mushroom at the highest section of the area to skip an entire turn. Video Recommended.

SPOILER! Highlight to View

Difficulty = 5

Towards the end of the course you will notice a red and white striped tree to your right. Make sure it is the last tree before the finish line. When you first see the tree start driving towards it at an angle that will not end up sending you off-road. When you are getting closer to the tree, use a mushroom and drive and drive off the course. A hop may or may not be involved with this glitch. If done correctly you should land to the right of the large pond. Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 0

Just use the ramp at the opposite side of where the shore comes in in the lake area.

Difficulty = 0

If you choose not to go the ramp side, you can simply use three mushrooms or a star to get through the entire lake.

DS Yoshi Falls

=--Difficulty = 0-== You can use a mushroom to cut across the middle waterfall.

SPOILER! Highlight to View

Difficulty = 5

As soon as the race starts, turn to your right, while still on the starting line. You should then SSMT and clip the pole to your right, which will send you flying off the track. If you manage to clip the pole to your right at just the right spot, you should fly across the large gap and land on the track again. Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 1

Half way through you will see a ramp, trick over it if your on 50-100cc but just jump if your on 150cc or Mirror Mode.

Difficulty = 3

If you use a mushroom at that same ramp while tricking to the side you skip an even bigger portion of the course.

Difficulty = 0

There are tons of off-road sections in this course. All you need to do is use a mushroom or two to get across any of them. They are all over the place so they are pretty much impossible to miss

Difficulty = 1

You can hop over some of the cracks in the very beginning of the course.

Difficulty = 0

When you see a rock in the middle of the course, take the right side and you will find a ramp.

Difficulty = 0

Use a mushroom to cut through the grass areas.

Difficulty = 0

You can use a mushroom to skip tons of water especially at the area right after the island section.

Difficulty = 0

At the end of the course stay to the left of the grass area and avoid the umbrella at the very end of the course.

Note: If you are using Manual Drift, you can hop over the water that is directly after each of the small islands towards the middle of the course.

Difficulty = 2

You can use a mushroom to cut across the pier section. Make sure to trick as well so you can reach the dock.

Difficulty = 0

Use a mushroom to cut across the two buildings towards the end of the course.

Difficulty = 0

There are a bunch of mud areas in this course. You can either use a mushroom to cut across them, or you can try and stay on the wall above the mud.

Difficulty = 0

At the beginning you will see a pyramid. Use two mushrooms to cut across the sand next to the pyramid.

Difficulty = 0

At the end of the course you will see a bunch of sand hills. Use a mushroom to cut across each of them. Stars or Golden Mushrooms work the best here.

Difficulty = 5

At the part with the yellow ramps, stop before the last one. Miniturbo while aiming at the middle of the brick and release. A mushroom can make this a lot easier. Video recommended.

Difficulty = 5

Instead of stopping before the last yellow ramp, stop at the first one. Then SSMT with a mushroom to hopefully cut across a ton of the track. You also need to have precise aim in order to get across the large lava pit. However, it is very hard to put into the word, the exact way for this to be done, so it would be best if you search for a video for this one. Video Recommended.

Note: There is also a way for this to be done without a mushroom, but that way is most likely even harder.

Difficulty = 4

This shortcut is just like the Mushroom Gorge one. You got to use a mushroom followed by a wheelie, followed by a hop. If done correctly you will have cut across a huge gap to where the ramp is.

Note: Make sure you hit the checkpoint in between the two palm trees.

Difficulty = 0

At the end of the course there will be a cave. You can use a mushroom to cut across the huge hill, make sure you donÕt hit the wall though.

Difficulty = 0

Use a mushroom to cut across the offroad area with the chain chomp.

Difficulty = 0

There a bunch of offroad areas in the beginning, use a mushroom for each of them.

Difficulty = 0

At the end of the course you can use a mushroom to cut across the middle of the two blocks.

Difficulty = 0

After the pond area, you will see a huge flower patch. Use a mushroom to cut across it.

Difficulty = 0

There are two other smaller flower patches that you can cut through as well. One after the huge flower patch and one after the chomp area.

Difficulty = 0

You can use a mushroom to cut across the grass where a ramp is at the end of the course.

SPOILER! Highlight to View

Difficulty = 5

Towards the middle of the track you will see a blue zipper the is directly next to a fence. When you get close to the blue zipper and fence, aim to drive into the very middle of the two. You may or may not have to be in the air when you hit the area between the blue zipper and fence. If done right you should land near the end of the track, right before the two gaps (the S looking section on the mini-map). Video Recommended.

Difficulty = 3

At the end of the course there is a gap. Simply drive off the side of the course and you will most likely get to the other side.

Difficulty = 0

Use a mushroom to cut a cross the grass areas.

Difficulty = 2

At the end of the course after the first jump there is small ledge. If you stay to the far right you will land on that ledge and skip a whole turn.

Question: Should I use any of the glitches that were stated in this FAQ online?

Answer: I do not recommend doing the glitch online, because not only is it unfair, it messes up rooms that were previously great, and will just anger the people you are racing.

Question: Do you recommend, Inside or Outside Drift?

Answer: I recommend for you to start out with Inside Drift when racing online, and if you really want to use an Outside Drift Vehicle, for you to practice with the vehicle offline.

Question: [Insert Technique/Shortcut here] is not included in this FAQ, what gives?

Answer: I may have forgotten about it, I do not know exactly how it is executed, or I just never heard of it.

Question: Do you recommend karts or bikes?

Answer: This entirely depends on what you prefer. Do you like doing wheelieÕs or bikes in general? Then use a bike. Do you like racing like you usually do in a Mario Kart game or karts in general? Then use a kart.

Question: I do not understand your explanation for [insert technique/shortcut here], can you explain it in more detail?

Answer: If you do not understand my explanation for anything in this guide, then I recommend searching for a video of whatever you need to know, because I am not sure if I would be able to explain what you want to know any better than I already did in this FAQ.
