"Ready. Aim. FIRE! (using your Wii Zapper of course)"
"Link's Crossbow Training" may be one of the first Wii games to make use of the Wii's special power, aiming and movement controlled by you. This game is controlled by using the Wii Zapper, a revised Wii controller bundled with the game that resembles a gun of some sort.
This game,"Link's Crossbow Training", is set in a style similar to that of "Twilight Princess".
You control the role of Nintendo's legendary hero Link yet again in order to improve and perfect his crossbow skills, with you in the drivers seat. You do so by passing a multitude of tests that get harder each time, starting with traditional stationary bulls-eye targets, and then upgrading to targets that actually move and real enemies.
This game has over 27 levels, or stages, and in each level/stage, you have to get the highest score you possibly can get within the time you are allowed to use. The levels are actually divided into three main types, each with 9 stages-target shooting, defender, and ranger. I'll explain each of these later.
Although the gameplay is actually nearly flawless for a Wii game, it does have it's downfall. The only downfall for this game, which I can not stress enough, is that the whole story mode adds up to only about one and a half hour. It adds up to two and a half hours if you want to receive platinum medals on every stage.
Target Shooting mode is essentially what you think it might turn out to be-in other words, you have to shoot targets. You start out with stationary targets, but then they start moving as you progress in the game. Just like real archery games, hitting the center, or bulls-eye, of the target will earn you more points. Also, if you hit a string of bulls-eyes without missing, your score for each multiplies.
Defender mode is probably what most people expected. In defender mode, you lose your ability to move, and you stay stationary. You do, however, keep your ability to shoot and also being able to shoot in a 360 degree angle. Missions in this mode range from fighting off wave after wave of enemies, to fighting Bokoblins, monsters that resemble goblins, riding on what seems like boars.
Ranger mode is probably the the most thrilling typ of mode. In this mode, you get to move around with Link using the Wii-mote's nunchuk attachment. In addition to this, you get to attack with your crossbow, a little like using your bow in Twilight Princess. Missions in this mode range from attacking danger-filled enemy camps, to weaving through a forest filled with enemies.
In addition to having a single-player mode, this game also sports a multiplayer mode. In this mode, you and your friends can compete for the high score in several stages.
Is this game worth the $25-50? The answer really depends all on you. If you like the idea of using a Wii "gun" to aim at targets to help improve your aim, then this is your type of game. If you don't like the idea of spending your money for a couple of hours of fun, then this game is not for you. Overall, I give this game an 8 out of 10. The gane is pretty great for a meer $25+ dollars.
