After a long wait, The Conduit comes to life on the Wii. But is it worth it?
One of The Conduit's major selling points was their graphics engine. The Quantum 3 engine lives up to the hype producing brilliant FPS graphics not yet seen on the Wii. The bump mapping, lighting, real time water engine, and deep textures provide a rich experience. Character and enemy models look stellar, but some of the environments look a bit bland. Nonetheless this is one of the more impressive graphical achievements on the Wii. Multi-player graphics are toned down to prevent lag. The environments lose their glow and their shine, but the character models and guns still look pretty solid. Overall this game's graphics produced as promised and no other developer has been able to say that.
The Conduit has revolutionized FPS' with their controls. Everything from the dead zone, cursor sensitivity, turning speed, walking speed, and everything in between can be customized to your liking to truly make this game your own. High Voltage Software even went as far to make your controller layout customizable. Don't like the button for jump? Fine, change it. Don't like using the nunchuck for grenades? Fine, change it. You can do anything and everything. Not only this, but while tweaking all of these options, you can do it in real time so you can actually test how everything feels on the fly. I must say this is a revolutionary addition that we are sure to see more developers jump on in the future.
While The Conduit has received much criticism for not having offline splitscreen, it does deliver on the online front. Matches can be played with a maximum of 12 players and have 20 different weapons, and 7 different maps. Online you can customize your HUD the way you wish, keeping the trend of customization. You can also customize your character with colors and skin type. Online play itself can be sketchy at times with lag being apparent if your connection isn't at least solid. To get into a game you can join friends, regional or world wide play. Once in the game you vote on the map, game type and weapon set to use. To play with friends you must exchange friend codes with each other. Once you have exchanged friend codes though, you can use the Wii Speak peripheral to chat with each other.
This game has 9 single player missions which can be quite difficult at times. The single player campaign takes anywhere from 6-10 hours to complete, and that's not including the Achievements system that the developers put into the game. The Achievements unlock cheat codes, art and other goodies. Once you complete the single player campaign, you can take your game online to test your skills against other players. The online play includes a ranking system so you have more incentive to keep playing and earning XP to level up.
The game is a must own for all Wii owners, especially fans of the FPS genre. The single player might be a bit linear for some, but for most of us it provides a great challenge. The Achievements system is a bonus and the online play is solid. It may not be Game of The Year material, but it is definitely the best First Person Shooter on the Wii to date and one of the best games to hit the console period. If you value solid games with effort involved, I would recommend buying this game to support HVS and all the work that they are putting into their games for the Wii.
