"A nice redemption to the series."

Overview
Gradius Rebirth is a WiiWare title which currently only has a Japanese release but for those who have played it anyway will agree that this is a good game to own if it is available in the US or European market. You are in control of Vic Viper and as usual you are going against the Bacterion forces who try to make life hell for the Earth. This is more of a remix of Gradius than it is a sequel. The bosses, with the exception of the first one, are some brand new ones.

Graphics 10/10
This graphics of Gradius Rebirth are reminiscent of Gradius 3. Better yet, the first stage itself is a remake of Level 3 of Gradius and Level 1 of the first Gradius put together depending on what you do in that level. With a lot of vivrant colors and well-made sprites and backgrounds with terrains that also provide a challenge for the player, this deserves a good 10.

Gameplay/Controls 9/10
Konami decided to go back to their old NES-style related controls where all you need is a D-pad and 2 buttons to play the game. The Konami code which this series made famous in 1986 for the NES. There five difficulty levels: Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Very Hard. The difference between difficulties are the behaviors and speed of the enemies and their projectiles as well as the number of lives you start out with. The terrain can also come out and attack you too like in Level 2 when part of it starts filling up and trying to trap you within its confines. True to its tradition, the game throws a sequence towards the very ending of the game where your guns will not help you but your maneuvering skills will. Also as usual is the fact is that the doors start to close up as you near the final boss and fans of the Gradius series already knows how the final boss fight is going to be. That's right folks, no resistance whatsoever. The game will loop after beating the game but you have to beat it on Normal Mode first.

Sound/Music 10/10
The remixes of older Gradius songs are awesome. Some of them I recognized off the bat but in general, the music as a whole sets the tone of mood for the part of the stage. In fact, one of the ending tunes is something to jam too and make a fan-remix or a song out of. The sound effects are definite on-point and the explosions of the bosses upon defeat are spectacular.

Replay Value 8/10
The replay value gets an 8. I like the fact that you have to replay it to see the true ending but there are some cases that seem hopeless if you die even once depending on the respawn points and the player has to regain all of their power to stand a chance unless they put in the Konami code but even that within itself has limited use.

Overall 9/10
Konami really did a good job with this game. It totally redeems the series since its days of Gradius 3 and I enjoyed every minute of it. There were a few spots that were hard and I got a little frustrated but I managed to pull through and figure out the patterns. That is the key to playing this game; play it a few times and monitor the pattern of the enemies and shots and soon you'll be able to get through this game. When will this game be available for the American or European market? Only time will tell.
