"Legend of Zelda is a Skyward Slam Dunk!"

Finally, the Wii Zelda fans have been waiting for has arrived in the form of Skyward Sword. Unfotunately it's not as great or polished as previous entries, but that doesn't stop it from being the definitive Wii Zelda experience.

First off, let's get the controls out of the way since it's the biggest aspect. The controls utilize the Wii Motion Plus, so in a multitude of ways the controls are more accurate than your typical Wii game, but it's a bit of a double edged sword in that it brings some flaws to the table as well. You WILL have to re-calibrate your remote if you steer too far off any given direction; This is most evident when traveling upon Link's bird companion, where the bird is exclusively controlled with the remote; Essentially you must swing the remote up and down to flap, which helps the bird gain altitude, however doing so may make the calibration go off center.

In terms of actual combat, it can be a blast to just wildly swing the wii remote and watch Link almost perfectly mimic your movements, but when it comes time to fight enemies it's not all fun and games. Enemies tend to be on the hard side in Skyward Sword, which doesn't help with what is otherwise an imprecise control method, as some enemies are peculiar about where they need to be hit, with one nasty example being the Skulltula, which you may remember as being one of the easiest enemies in Zeldas of past, is now quite a bit more fearsome(literally) in that its is more or less invincible unless you stab a small weak spot on their belly, which with the imprecise control method means you could lose a couple hearts. Once you figure things out, it tends to not be as frustrating and becomes more on par with Twilight Princess' control scheme.

Skyward Sword breaks tradition by starting Link off with six hearts as opposed to three. To compensate for this, there is no longer the ability to lose a mere quarter of a heart, only half or whole at a time, and enemies tend to shave off a whole moreso than half, and with the control scheme it makes enemies quite intimidating quickly. The skulltulas I mentioned appear in the very first dungeon, for example.
Bosses are not nearly as frustrating as enemies, and actually display the control scheme at its best, especially in the first boss battle wherewhat may seem like an annoying battle method ends up showing its brilliance.

So while Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword may not be as epic or great as its previous entries, it is still one of the better modern Zelda games, beating out all but Twilight Princess(It comes close to beating it though!). If you already have the Wii Motion Plus, simply pay the $50 to experience one of the Wii's best games, just have a good time.
