"Funnier than Halo 2, but it doesn't have the same great feel..."
Genre: FPS (first person shooter)
You take the role of a Hazmat. You are sent to Area 51 on a viral clean up. When you arrive, all hell breaks loose. An alien virus has overrun the facility, and it has turned it's scientists and workers into vicious, human like creatures. Early in the game, the two remaining hazmats try and pull out to safety, but the large, sideways moving equipment elevator you are on is hit by an explosion and you fall deep into Area 51... (I wont go further or I might spoil a small but expected suprise). The story is well thought out and unfolds smoothly. It may not make for a great feel (like Halo's story line) but it is very entertaining.
The game play is almost perfect. The areas are massive and never become repetitive. Each area presents it's own unique challenge. Though there is much shooting involved. Many times in the game you must perform tasks, such as hunting keys and jumping from platform to platform. At a couple of points in the game you even take control of a big turret. The enemies are vicious and great in number, plus they have a good AI, you can tell they REALLY REALLY want to kill you. The only flaw with Area 51 is that there aren't to many different enemies to fight. The best part is, the game is extremely fun, and as the game goes on it keeps getting funnier. I beat it in two sitting, with over 12 hours of play (I watched a clock to time myself). Area 51 is as fun as FarCry, Doom 3, Halo and Halo 2.
This is the kind of game you can beat in one sitting. Not because it's short, but because it's very very fun. The only thing that keeps the game from being called "funnier than Halo" by everyone, is that the story and setting makes the feel of the game to... "confused." At times the game will try to make a creepy feel, then shortly after a "cool" feeling. This change makes the game not have a great feel. The game play is next to perfect, so is the set up of the areas. This is one of the funniest games ever.
The graphics are superb. Every detail, from the gun in your hand to the blood and dirt on the walls. Every little area has been wonderfully rendered. Your gun shoots and moves realistically. The explosions look real. The characters look like real people. And at times the game can seem nearly photo realistic. Plus it doesn't have that "normal mapped" look (everything is not extra shiny). The overall graphics are superb. A perfect ten.
Sound Effects: 10/10
The sound effects are perfect. All of the details can be heard. When you walk on metal you hear the sound of your boots against the metal. When you walk though ruble and over dirt you hear a clear and crisp "crunch, crack." Even the explosions feel and sound very powerful. The sound of your gun is correct always. When your in a hallway you hear a small echo, everything about the sound is perfect.
The music is great. Most people will like it. The problem is, there isn't enough of it. Plus it doesn't always play when it should, and sometimes it will play when it shouldn't (it doesn't always play at fitting times). Other than that, the music is great.
Replay Value: 8/10
The game will give you a good 12 hours of play time. After you manage to beat the game, there isn't too much of a reason to play again. But they did give you some reasons. There are a good bit of extras hidden within the game, such as files and videos.
The game play is perfect. It never becomes repetitive, and always stays fun. Occasionally the game may become frustrating. But that is rare. The graphics are superb. And the sound effects are extremely detailed. This is one of the best FPS on the market
Rent or Buy?
If you don't care too much for FPS (first person shooters) rent before you buy. If you love games like Halo and Doom 3, you will love Area 51, buy it don't rent it.
