Review by Fire Thief2004
"One of the best fighting games ever!!!"
Mortal Kombat Deception was originally released on October 5th, 2004 for the Xbox and Playstation 2. This review is on the Xbox version. This is most certainly one of the most anticipated Mortal Kombat games ever, and it does NOT disappoint. It is the best Mortal Kombat game ever! It's a classic. Mortal Kombat Deception is a one on one fighting game, with twenty-four characters to play as in all, once you unlock them all. There are also rumored, Super Unlockables. They are yet to be found, but there is a 90% chance that they are in there.
Mortal Kombat Deception features four main game modes. I will go into to them with detail.
Arcade Mode: The traditional mode of Mortal Kombat. You select your fighter and battle all of the opponents until you make it to the final boss. The control is perfect, and very responsive. No flaws whatsoever. If you win, you can earn koins to use in the Krypt to unlock many secrets within the game.
Puzzle Kombat: This is a unique mode that is very similar to Capcom's Super Puzzle Fighter series. You also go to the top until you make it to the final boss. You stack colored blocks on top of each other, and then you stick a colored bomb on the top to blow them up! The blocks that you blow up transfer to your opponents side. Whoever's blocks pass the red line at the top of the screen, loses. You can also build up a special to execute on your opponent once you destroy enough blocks. Execute it by pressing X. When you win, you get to see your super deformed Mortal Kombat character perform his or her fatality on the opponent, who is also a super deformed Mortal Kombat character. It is very addicting and entertaining. You can also make many koins in this mode.
Chess Kombat: This mode is awesome!!! What you do is choose a team of Mortal Kombat characters to play chess with. You can set two hidden bombs that the opponent cannot see, and if they step on them, they die! You also have a sorcerer where you can perform a spell on your opponent, ranging from killing them to even teleporting them to a different space. When two characters are on the same space, you fight for it! Whoever wins gets to stay on the space, while the loser dies. Whenever the Champion, which is the King, dies, then the person who killed him or her wins the game. You can rack up many koins in this mode, too.
Konquest: One of the best new features in the game, Konquest mode is a Mortal Kombat RPG. You can walk around and complete quests. You will be making the majority of your koins in the mode, as it has a humongous amount of them. You play as Shujinko, a new character in the Mortal Kombat series. When you start the mode, Shujinko will be in his pre-teens, and by the time you finish it, he will be an old man. Did I mention it's a free roaming adventure? You can do whatever you want. Kill innocent people, steal koins from their houses, you name it! One of the main reasons you should play is to unlock Krypt Keys. They can only be gotten in this mode, and they unlock a certain koffin in the Krypt. You can unlock characters, alternate costumes for the characters, stages to fight on, bios for the characters, music, and videos. One of the coolest features of Konquest mode is that every character from every Mortal Kombat game is in it, and that's a lot! They are not playable, but you can still talk to them, and even fight some of them.
If I reveal it to you, it will spoil it. You must play Konquest mode to find out everything. The main thing is, Onaga, the Dragon King, has hatched from his egg, and now you must try to defeat him.
The Xbox displays the graphics for this game perfectly. They are simply amazing.
Everything sounds perfect.
Play Time/Replayability: 10/10
Whew! There are so many things to do and unlock, it will take you months! The Krypt itself is huge, with tons of coffins to unlock. Also, each character has their own ending, and it will take a long time to beat the game with everyone. Konquest mode is also full of secrets and surprises.
Final Recommendation: Buy
You will be missing out on so much if you don't buy this game. It is worth buying an Xbox solely for this game. It is that good. One of the best fighting games ever, and an instant classic.
