  I. GENERAL NOTES
*************************

There are several reasons why you should attempt to beat Survival Mode (and
eventually beat it).
  1. To complete your ghost list. One of the ghosts on your ghost list can
only be secured by playing Survival Mode. And he’s the last ghost you have
to fight—which makes it quite the pain. You need to get through the entire
level and then, you need to make sure that you also get a Fatal Frame on this
ghost. One thing I did not know about the Spirit List when I first started
to try and complete it was that you need to Fatal Frame the last 25 ghosts
on the list. Eventually I will also be posting a Spirit List Guide (for the
XBox Version) which will list all of the ghosts and how to make sure that you
can complete your list.
  2. To unlock something fun! (I haven’t beaten the mode yet to get any of
the unlockables for it, so if anyone has any information about what you get
for it, please email me. My contact information is at the bottom =)
  3. To finish the game. If you’re like me and you’re completely obsessive
over actually finishing your games completely, you may just be doing it so
that you can finish the game. I’m one of those losers, but I could never
figure out the right way to go. So, I went around the web searching, trying
to find some sort of guide posted. I found a couple posts on forums which
helped me get through some of the things I was having trouble with, and I
figured, hey. I’m going to go through it anyways; I might as well take some
notes and help some other people out too. So, here you go =) If you have any
suggestions, corrections, etc, my contact information is at the bottom.
Send me an email and I’ll get it in the guide as soon as I can.

Personally, I also think that you should play the level through twice, as
it will make it much easier for you. The first time through, get used to
the controls, where everything is, and be sure to get your fatal frame on
Utsuro (the last boss). This way, you don’t need to worry about it later
on when you are trying to get your SS Ranking on it. Then, play it a
second time for the SS Ranking. Speed through, don’t worry about the ghosts
(besides the ones I mention below as ones you need to fight), and just get
to the end as quickly as possible.

Hope this helps! =)

 II. WALKTHROUGH
*************************

Section 1: KIRYU HOUSE

MISONO HILL: Immediately in front of you is a glowing object. Pick it up
to read about survival Mode. Walk forward and start the trek down the path
towards All God’s Village.

PATHWAY: When the camera angle shifts so that it is looking at you straight
on, your filament will glow orange, signaling that you’ve met your first
ghostie. It’s a mourner, which you should be able to see pretty clearly in
the bottom right of the screen (to Mio’s left).
--NOTE: If you go too far back up the Hill while fighting the mourner
here, they will appear back where they started and you will have to fight
them all over again.
--Continue down towards All God’s Village and you will see a second
mourner right inside of the village about even with the Osaka house.

OUTSIDE KIRYU HOUSE: You then have a clear path to the Kiryu House until
you reach the save lantern right outside, at which point you will be
attacked by limbo woman and limbo man(?). Just avoid them and enter the door.

KIRYU HOUSE ENTRANCE: There are no ghosts here

HANGING DOLL ROOM: You will encounter the Dollmaker.
--NOTE: I would recommend killing him here when you have the chance
so that he does not follow you through the rest of this first section
of the game. Easiest and quickest way is just to load up on type Zero
film, when you spot him run real close and take a Zero shot. Two shots
should get rid of him (or one with a Crush shot).

TATAMI ROOM HALLWAY: Here you will find 2x Man in Dark and 1x Woman
in Dark.
--NOTE: If you defeat a ghost in the hallway but not all of them,
and enter a side room, they will all be back when you come back out,
but if you make sure that you clear out the hallway before you enter
another room (ie: Sealed Room if you need a stone mirror), they will
not come back.

SEALED ROOM (optional): If you need a Stone Mirror, you can enter the
Sealed Room at this time. There is one on the Dollmaker’s workbench.
The twins are in the room though, so if you decide to do this be sure
to avoid them. They will not lock the door behind you, so if you’re
good, you can slip in, get the stone mirror and get back out without
fighting.

TWINS ROOM: Here you will find Miyako Sudo and Masumi Makimura (the
surveyor and his girlfriend). They are usually pretty close to the door
you want to go out of, so be careful when going through this room.

1/F HALLWAY OF CONTRASTS: This is one of those rooms where if you do
something specific it will trigger a ghost attack—that specific thing being
getting the stone mirror behind the curtain at the end of the hallway. If
you happen to need it, you can grab it, but then you will need to avoid a
Limbo Man and a Man (or Woman) in Dark. They will come out of the wall on
Mio (and your right) halfway down the hallway, so be sure to stay to the
left of the hallway and run as quickly as you can so that they do not catch
you.

STAIRCASE HALLWAY: Here you will find two Priests. They are usually in the
middle of the stairs winding up to beat you with their giant staffs, but you
can run right through them. Run up the stairs.

STAIRWAY ROOM: Lucky! No ghosties anywhere to be seen!

SLIDING SCREEN ROOM: Still lucky! (Or at least as far as I know, I have
never been attacked here). So, go down the stairs.

1/F SLIDING SCREEN ROOM: Again, no ghosts here. Prepare yourself for the
next room though, because it is a battle you will not be able to run from.

PROJECTOR ROOM: I’ll warn you again before you enter this room, be ready to
do battle with the twins. As soon as you enter, they lock the doors on you
and you need to fight and kill them for the doors to open so that you can
continue your trek. If you need a stone mirror, there is one in the corner
of this room between the projector and the screen on the side of the wall
with no doors. Once the girls are dead, go ahead and move on.
--NOTE: This is a required battle. You can’t run away from them once you
are in the room.
--NOTE: I’ve recently come upon a good way to tell whether you have the
Twin or the Doll when you’re battling at this part. There are two different
“Why do you kill”s that you hear when you are fighting the twins in a battle.
At the very beginning of the battle, only one will come out at a time. Save
up a Crush shot for when you go in. If you hear the deeper more mechanical
“why do you kill” you have the doll. Give it a 14 shot to the face to stop
it from hurting you. If you hear the higher more childlike “why do you kill”,
it is the little girl. Get out your Zero Film and give her a Crush shot to
the face. It will take her out in the one shot and you can move on. You
should use this same tactic each time you have to battle them. It will make
the battles much less frustrating.

DOLL ROOM: The girls are here again. You’ll hear them as you enter, but you
don’t actually need to fight them here. Go ahead and run straight for the
ladder to take you down into the passageway and go on down.

A PASSAGEWAY: The passageway has three ghosts you will need to defeat before
you can make it to the other side and come up into the Tachibana House. The
first ghost you will encounter is a mourner. Take care of him as you normally
would, and then move forward a bit more to encounter a Man in Dark. Not too
difficult either with strong film. The third ghost you’ll run into is Wounded
Man. Once you get rid of him, climb the ladder and enter the second section =)

-----------------

Section 2: TACHIBANA HOUSE

LARGE STOREROOM: Good place to get your bearings a bit, because there are
no ghosts here, and as soon as you exit, you will hit a decent amount of them.

HALLWAY OF CONTRASTS: Oh goodness. Here you will encounter a mourner and
2x Woman in Box.

TWINS ROOM: You’d think that there would be at least something here, right?
No. Of course not. I didn’t encounter any ghosties here, so just head on
through.

TATAMI ROOM HALLWAY: This is going to be a giant pain. Just warning you up
front. Here you will encounter five spirits. Yes. I said it. Five. You’ll
encounter 2x Man in Dark and 3x Woman in Dark. And they’ll all come after you
fairly quickly. Be sure to get in Zero or Fatal Frames and get rid of them
as quickly as they come at you or you’ll be overrun.
--NOTE: You have to fight here. Some people have said that they received
their key for the locked door here. If you do, more power to you. Open the
locked door with the key and head straight to the Clock Hallway. If you didn’t
receive it from these guys (as I never have), get ready for a bit of a trek
up the stairs and over to Row of Tatami Rooms S&W.

ROOM WITH TATAMI: No ghosties here! One of those rare moments where you
have a second or two to figure out where you’re going and what you’ll need
for the next part.

ROW OF TATAMI ROOMS (S + W): The last time I played, I didn’t get the
Paulonia Key from the ghosties in the Tatami Room Hallway to open the locked
door, I had to go to these two rooms and defeat the Priests there as well.
There was one in each room, I went to the South room first and defeated the
Priest, and then when I got to the West room and defeated the Priest there,
I was given the key. Then you need to get back down to the…

ROW OF TATAMI ROOMS (N): If you need a Stone Mirror you can head into this
room but I honestly wouldn’t suggest it. If you do, you run the risk of
running into Kids Playing Tag. I’m not real sure how many there are (if
they appear—they’ve only appeared once for me) but there are at least 2
and they lock the door behind you until you finish fighting them.
--NOTE: If you don’t get the key from the Priests above or the ghosties
in the Tatami Room Hallway, this is your next good bet.

TATAMI ROOM HALLWAY: Open the locked door with the key you received from
the Priest (or the Man in Dark if you happened to get lucky and have it
dropped for you then).

CLOCK HALLWAY: Alright, we all know what’s coming. Fallen Woman drops to
the ground in front of you. And again. And again. There are actually
three of them in the room with you when they finish dropping the first time.
Go ahead and run up the stairs.

SLIDING SCREEN ROOM: When you arrive at the 2F Sliding Screen Room, you
will find Chitose (Crimson Kimono) and Boy Playing Tag. And before you
ask, yes. It’s the obnoxious one that jumps a lot. Thankfully, there
is a Stone Mirror in the room in case you have a problem. Once you have
defeated them, go back down the stairs and out the door.
--NOTE: I believe this is also a battle that you must actually do.
Easiest way to get through it is to have a Crush shot ready when you come
in, equip some Zero Film and take out Chitose first. Then, when you see
the little boy, take your Zero shot of him (or if you have the film
available, two close shots or whatever). Just be quick if you’re aiming
for the grade on Survival Mode.

WHISPER BRIDGE: When you start across the Whisper Bridge you will encounter
at least one Drowned/Floating Woman and at least one Veiled Priest. I
didn’t stick around to find out exactly how many, as you can just quickly
run across the bridge to avoid them.

-----------------

Section 3: KUROSAWA HOUSE

UNDERGROUND CELLAR: When you enter the Kurosawa House grounds, don’t
even worry about trying the front door, it’s locked. You need to go
to the right and use the side door. Take the stairs down into the
Underground Cellar and you will run into Drowned/Floating Woman and
two mourners. There is also a Stone Mirror here.
--NOTE: You must battle them here. There is a lone Mourner out front,
which you can easily dispatch with a Zero shot Crush. If you are able to
do that, the second Mourner should be on his way over. You can give him
a rousing round of Fatal Frames or wait for the Zero Shots. Be wary of
Drowned Woman’s underwater/ground attack. It’s sneaky.

WAREHOUSE HALLWAY: When you are walking through the hallway, you will
see a child run out in front of you (Cut-in-Child) and your filament will
glow blue (or at least it did for me). I didn’t get a chance to get the
shot to know precisely who it was, but I don’t believe he is necessary for
your ghost list.

CLOTH HALLWAY: Here you will encounter Limbo Man and 2x Limbo Woman. It
may be easier to go to the Storage Room and fight them there should you
decide to fight.

STORAGE ROOM: There is also a Stone Mirror here.

ENTRANCE: Eip! The Kusabi is here. Don’t even try to take his picture
to aid in your escape—it doesn’t do any good. Just run.

ANTECHAMBER: Yes, the Kusabi is still chasing you.

DIRT PASSAGEWAY: No more Kusabi! There are some fleeing villagers that
will run out in front of you though where they did in the game as you’re
going towards the great hall.

GREAT HALL: Here you will encounter the kids playing tag. I believe you
will run into three boys and two girls. There is also a Stone Mirror here
which is in the same spot where you find the Sacred Water in the actual
game. It is obscured by one of the partitions on the right hand side.
--NOTE: You must battle them here. I know. It’s a pain. We all hate
them, and it can be quite difficult if you don’t get rid of a couple of
them quickly before they all start running at you. If you get lucky and
they appear together (in a set of two), be sure to get a good Zero Crush
in and it will take the two out in one shot. Take your shots as you get
them, and be wary of children running out from behind you. Because there
are so many of them, your filament may not be your best friend. Just keep
getting out of viewfinder mode and finding them and then getting back in.
You have the best shot of not being hit that way.
--NOTE: Core shots with type Zero film take them out. If you have it
to spare, just get close to them and

COURTYARD STAIRCASE: No ghosties. Run up the stairs.

GUEST ROOM HALLWAY: Here there will be a Limbo Man and a Limbo Woman.
Just run right past them.

FLICKERING ROOM: No ghosties!

DOLL STAND ROOM: The twins are back again. There is also a Stone Mirror
behind the partition near where you came in. Get the Butterfly Key from
the twins.
--NOTE: You need to fight them here because you need the Key they drop.

MASTER’S ROOM: Here, you will find Woman in Box behind the banister
where it says that you can look down into the room below in the game.

MEDITATION ROOM: Use the Butterfly Key to enter the Meditation Room. Go
down the staircase and then down again and through the door to enter the…

CONNECTING CORRIDOR: Run up to the top on either side and open the door.
(How weird to see Mio opening the door rather than hearing the click and
the screen fading out to see Mio and Mayu both...)

LATTICE ROOM: No ghosties.

ROPE TEMPLE/ALTAR: Ugh. Kusabi. Don’t worry about him (besides avoiding
him). Once you get rid of his two priest friends he will disappear.
--NOTE: This is another battle you must do. Get rid of the Priests as
quickly as you can. The Kusabi is still a one-touch-killa even with a
Stone Mirror. So, don’t let him touch you at all.

SPIRAL HALLWAY: There are no ghosts as you travel down the Spiral Hallway.
Open the door at the bottom to find yourself in the…

-----------------

Section 4: HELLISH ABYSS

PATHWAY: When you hit the first part of the path where it forks, you will
find yourself face-to-face with one solitary Mourner. The second ghost you
will meet up with in this passage is Injured Man. Then, you will encounter
Limbo Woman, and finally, at the very bottom of the last flight of steps
you will find another solitary Mourner.

ETERNAL RITUAL SPOT: There is a Stone Mirror to the right of the spot where
you find the girls called ‘Eternal Ritual’ during the game. You will also
find a Priest and two Mourners here.
--NOTE: Alright. You don’t NEED to fight these guys, but if you don’t
they will follow you to the end boss (Utsuro) and you probably don’t want
that.

HELLISH ABYSS: At the very bottom you will find Utsuro. He is one of the
ghosts needed to fill up your spirit list, and is one that requires a Fatal
Frame, so keep this in mind if you don’t plan on doing survival mode another
time. There are four Stone Mirrors at the four corners of the Hellish Abyss.
--NOTE: You can kill the skulls he shoots at you by taking a picture
of them. If you’re trying to take a picture of him, his core is on his
‘head’ if one could call it that. People have also recommended standing
literally up against the Hellish Abyss and circling around him. His Fatal
Frame presents itself when he gets ready to do the poison mist ball attack.
Some have also reported Zero shots when he’s getting ready to release the
skulls.

III. RANKINGS
*************************

If you want to get the SS Ranking on the game, I have a few suggestions
  1. Wait until you have your camera completely leveled up—being able
to use all of the lenses/functions and everything as well as having your
range and such upgraded makes it so much easier to defeat the ghosties
and keep running.
  2. Buy lots and lots of Zero and 90 film. Zero for the bosses and 90
for the rooms that have lots of ghosties in it because it reloads much quicker.
  3. Don’t fight any of the ghosts unless you see above that you need to.
If you fight extra ghosts you’re wasting time and ammunition, and time is
primarily what your ranking is based on.

For an SS Ranking: 30 minutes
For an S Ranking: 35 minutes
For an A Ranking:
For a B Ranking:
For a C Ranking:
For a D Ranking:
