Where to get stone?

Where in the heck are you suppsed to find stone to make buttons & stone slabs? the recipe calls for stone to make a button but if you mine stone blocks you get cobblestone! If you can't get stone itself then you can't make buttons or anything else that needs stone.

Cook cobblestone in a Furnace.
