INTRODUCTION Nurarihyon no Mago: Hyakki Ryouran Taisen is a 4 player fighting game developed by Arc System Works, the talented team behind the hardcore fighting games Blazblue and Guilty Gear. As would be expected from Arc System Works, this game features a deep fighting system and a level of depth that is sure to please fighting game fans. Not only does this game feature a finely tuned fighting system, Arc System Works was able to achieve this while still staying true to the original manga. The superb attention to detail and the inclusion of more than 100 characters as callable assists will surely be a treat for diehard fans of the series as well as those who enjoy customization and variety. =============================================================================== 2. ABOUT THE FAQ Before we get into this I want to make clear what this FAQ is and what it is not. Since the game is entirely in Japanese, the main purpose of this FAQ is to provide the criteria to complete the objectives in Mission Mode. The Mission Mode is a large portion of the game and it is necessary to complete it in its entirety to unlock all of the summon characters without playing online. Many of the in-game descriptions of the mission criteria are long and most likely appear daunting to people who cannot read Japanese. Ironically, many of the missions that include a long description are not incredibly difficult and much of the information is not necessary to complete the mission. Consequently, I will not be providing complete translations of the game's mission descriptions and instead will only provide the criteria necessary to complete the mission. Additionally, for the most part I will not be providing strategies for individual missions because whether or not you can complete them tends to rely on your skill at the game; very few of the missions allow you to exploit some kind of trick to win. I will, however, provide you with all of the information you need about supports or any other features you may need to know to complete the mission. =============================================================================== 3. TERMINOLOGY Many of the missions involve fulfilling some kind of objective dealing with one or more gameplay aspects. Since many of the people reading this FAQ do not speak Japanese, I will now provide a translation of the game features and a brief description on them so everyone can be aware of the proper terminology: -Supreme Commander: The character you are playing as. -Attendants: The two characters you select to aid you in battle. -Minions: The 8 summon characters you assign to the right stick. -Influence Gauge: This is the large bar at the bottom of the screen. Defeating opponents and claiming Shima affect this gauge. Taking control of the entire gauge leads to victory for your side. -Fear Gauge: The small gauge at the bottom of the screen; it is this game's "Special Bar." -Special Attack: Executed by pressing R1 and Square; consumes half of the Fear Gauge. I will refer to this as a "Super." -Night Parade of a Hundred Demons Technique: Executed by pressing R1 and Triangle; consumes all of the Fear Gauge. I will refer to this as an "Ultimate." -Shima: The stones around the levels that you attack to claim to your side. These are what allow you to summon higher level minions and make all of your minions recharge faster. For fans of the series who are interested in why Arc System Works named the stones Shima, it is actually a play on words. "Shima" can mean "territory" in Japanese and claiming the Shima in this gives you control over the territory around the stone. -Minion Acquisition Mode: When you go to Mission Mode, these are the missions accessed by selecting the left option. These are further broken down into Green, Blue, Red, and Gold level missions. Each mission you complete rewards you with a new Minion Card. -Difficult Mode: When you go to Mission Mode, these are the missions accessed by selecting the right option. Unlike Minion Acquisition Mode, you do not receive a reward upon the completion of most of the missions. However, you do receive the Gold level Seimei Attack Version card after you complete about half of these and upon completing all of the missions, the Minion Acquisition Missions included, you receiving the Nura Rihan Minion Card. =============================================================================== 4. GENERAL TIPS Rather than providing strategies for each mission, I will now provide you with general tips for the game and tips for the different types of missions. ------------- General Tips ------------- -Do the Tutorial Mode in its entirety. Even if you cannot read Japanese, the Tutorial Mode is set up such that if you cannot intuit what to do, trial and error will lead you to complete each objective. -Complete Story Mode with all of the characters and all of the Minion Acquisition Missions before attempting the Difficult Missions; doing so will unlock 108 out of 110 of the Minion Cards. The Difficult Missions are considerably harder than the other missions and it will make completing them a lot easier if you have certain minions. In some cases you will need specific minions to complete a mission, so save yourself some time and get all of those out of the way first. Doing all of that first will make you better and more accustomed to the game, which will be helpful for the Difficult Missions as they require a high level of skill to accomplish. -Practice effectively directing your attendants. Some missions will require you to defeat the opponent with only your attendants and some will also result in failure if your attendants die. You will need to be able to effectively switch them between Attack Mode and Defense Mode and have them attack from Defense Mode. ------------------------ About Mission Objectives ------------------------ -All of the mission objectives, including the "defeat the opponent" missions must be completed within the time limit. This means that, unlike in a normal match, if time runs out and the Influence Gauge is in your favor you still lose. Thus, for missions that require you to defeat the opponent it is not enough to have more influence when time runs out; you must completely defeat the opponent to win. -If my description says to "only" attack using commander/attendants/minions, violating that condition will result in a failure. -For missions that your commander and/or attendants start off with low life, each time you die and respawn your characters will still start off with low life. These missions often give you minions that heal, so make sure you use them. -If you lose a fight in the "win X consecutive battles" missions, you must start over from the beginning. ---------------------------------------- Activate Your Ultimate Within a Set Time ---------------------------------------- -Use Kokehime and Yomekko to quickly increase your Fear Gauge for the missions that require you to use your Ultimate within a certain amount of time. -Put both of your attendants in Attack Mode so they can fight and generate Fear. -While your attendants fight, claim all of the Shima so your Fear will rise on its own. -------------- Combo Missions -------------- -Selecting Kubinashi as your commander for the combo missions makes them very easy to complete. -For the combo missions that only allow you to use your minions, Kyuuso, Amezou, and Kyoukotsu (Father) are particularly useful. -Take your time on these missions; the opponent will not try to hinder you. If you are using Kyuuso be sure to kill the opponent enough time to get the Influence Gauge in your favor or he will not attack when he is summoned. Let all of your supports charge and get the opponent in a good position. --------------------------------------------- Win Using Only Your Minions and/or Attendants --------------------------------------------- -Claim all of the Shima so your minions will recharge faster. -Many of the missions that require you to win using only your attendants and minions let you use the Satori Minion Card. Make sure you claim enough Shima to activate this card as soon as possible because he makes your attendants attack more vigorously. -Be sure to heal your attendants with your minions if they need it. -Appropriately switching your attendants between Attack Mode and Defense Mode is vital to completing these missions. Depending on the mission, sometimes you should leave one of them in Defense Mode to protect you. If they are in Defense Mode be sure to use their Defense Mode attack. ------------------------------- Claim All of the Shima Missions ------------------------------- -The key to winning the "Claim all of the Shima" missions is to destroy multiple Shima with the same attack. The Difficult Mode versions of these missions are much harder than their Minion Acquisition Mode counterparts, so do not get discouraged if you have trouble with them. -If you are just barely completing these missions with only a second left on the clock, then you are doing them correctly. Spend some time getting to know the layout of the level, the location of the Shima, and the timing of the stage gimmicks. -Select the proper character depending on the layout of the level. I completed all of these missions with only Nurarihyon and Itaku. If the Shima are positioned vertically, select Nurarihyon and use his up + triangle attack so that he claims multiple Shima with the same attack. Select Itaku if the Shima are positioned horizontally and use his left/right + triangle attack with proper positioning to claim multiple Shima at once. -Become skilled at air dashing and high jumping, this is incredibly useful for covering ground quickly. Learn the properties of your square attacks, in some situations it may be quicker to break the Shima with those rather than one of the triangle attacks. Tips Specifically for the Difficult Mode Shima Missions: -In Difficult Mode Tsuchigumo tries much harder to get in your way. Do not attempt to fight him or interact with him in any way. Not only does he try harder to attack you, but he also tries to block your path. While this is more subtle, it is just as annoying and will definitely make completing the missions harder. -Because the first time you do these missions you will probably complete them with only 1 or 2 seconds to spare, in general you should retry the missions (the second option on the start menu) if any of the following happen: -If you notice that your movements are slowed, even slightly, because Tsuchigumo is standing so close to you that he is blocking your path. -If he hits you. -If he claims any of the Shima. -If you hit him with any attack that causes a delay. He will purposely try to get you to hit him, which is not good for you depending on the attack you use. For example Nurarihyon's up triangle is particularly useful for these missions because it easily breaks Shima and moves you quickly. If you hit Tsuchigumo with this, depending on how you do it a lag occurs while the attack grinds against him. Attacks that do this waste your time, so avoid hitting Tsuchigumo with it. Also, if you are using certain attacks because of the momentum they provide, Tsuchigumo will try to get hit by these to slow you down. -If your planned attack on a Shima fails and it does not break. -Selecing the right character for the job is even more important in this mode. I will put the character that I find can most easily complete the mission along with a strategy to do so. =============================================================================== 5. MINION ACQUISITION MODE These missions are arranged in increasing difficulty, with Green being the easiest and Gold being the hardest. I cannot stress enough that you complete all of these before attempting the Difficult Mode Missions. The gap in difficulty between those missions is about as large as the gap between the Green and Gold missions. The main difference between the two types of missions it that the Minion Acquisition Missions focus on utilizing your attendants and minions, while the Difficult Missions are more a test of skill with a single character. -------------- Green Missions -------------- 1. Get Sodemogi-sama to activate his effect 3 times. To activate his effect, summon him and get him to fly into the opponent, and then while he is latched onto the opponent get the opponent to turn around. A general strategy to follow here is to get him to latch onto the opponent, get behind the opponent and attack. 2. Claim all of the Shima. 3. Defeat the opponent with your Ultimate. 4. Using Karasu Tengu's ability, hit the opponent 3 times on your third jump. One of Karasu Tengu's effects is that he gives you a third jump. There are a couple of easy ways to complete this mission. You can either jump to your third jump and hit the enemy or you can do 3 combos of jump cancels that use the third jump. 5. Do a 5 hit combo using only your commander. 6. Win using only your attendants' attacks. If they die once or time runs out, you lose. 7. Claim all of the Shima within 15 seconds using only your commander. 8. Win using only your minions. If your commander hits the opponent you lose. 9. Hit the opponent with each of the minions 3 times. 10. Do a 5 hit combo using only your attendants and minions. 11. Use Oitekebori to steal a minion from the opponent 2 times. To activate Oitekebori's effect, summon her where you would like her stay and if any of your opponent's minions move within the aura she generates, she takes their Minion Card and backs away. 12. Your commander's life starts off low, win the fight. 13. Win within 45 seconds. 14. Win 2 consecutive fights using characters of your choice. ------------- Blue Missions ------------- 1. Win using only your minions. If your commander hits the opponent you lose. 2. Do a 15 hit combo. You can use your attendants and minions, but not the Fear Gauge. 3. Win using only your minions. If your commander hits the opponent you lose. 4. Win using only your minions. If your commander hits the opponent you lose. 5. Get Inugami to activate his effect twice. To activate Inugami's effect, summon Inugami so the opponent will hit him before he does his normal attack. 6. Claim all of the Shima within 20 seconds using only your commander. 7. Your commander's life starts off low, win the fight. 8. Claim all of the Shima. 9. Win using only your minions. If the commander hits the opponent you lose. 10. Win using only your attendants. If they die once you lose. 11. Win within 35 seconds. 12. Claim all of the Shima within 15 seconds. 13. Use your Ultimate within 60 seconds. 14. Defeat a powered up Yura. 15. Defeat a powered up Itaku with the Influence Gauge starting off in his favor. 16. Complete 5 consecutive battles using various characters from the Nura Clan. ------------ Red Missions ------------ 1. Do a 25 hit combo. You can use your commander, attendants, and minions, but the Fear Gauge is locked. 2. Win using only your minions. 3. Your commander's life starts off low, win the fight. 4. Hit the opponent with Kappa's fully charged Mizuchidama twice. 5. Do a 10 hit combo off of Great Tengu of Mount Kurama's attack. He does 2 hits, so you actually have to do a 12 hit combo counting his two hits. 6. Win using only your attendants and minions. 7. Do a 20 hit combo using only your attendants and minions. 8. Claim all of the Shima within 22 seconds using only your commander. 9. Use Gyuuki to defeat the opponent twice. If you let him fully charge, he does about 75% of the opponent's life. 10. Win using only your minions. The key to completing this mission is to properly use Mezumaru and Minagoroshi Jizou. If your opponent's attendants get hit by either of these minions they turn against the opponent. If the opposing commander gets hit by it they only get stunned, so make sure you hit the attendants. 11. Use your Ultimate within a minute. 12. Claim all of the Shima within 22 seconds using only your commander. 13. Your commander's life starts off low, win the fight. 14. Claim all of the Shima. 15. Win within the time limit. The Influence Gauge starts off in your opponent's favor. 16. Claim all of the Shima within 15 seconds using only your commander. 17. Defeat a powered up Setsura within the time limit. 18. Win 5 consecutive battles using various characters. 19. Defeat a powered up Rikuo within the time limit. 20. Win 5 consecutive battles using various characters. ------------- Gold Missions ------------- 1. Do a 35 hit combo. You can use your attendants and minions, but not the Fear Gauge. 2. Win using only your attendants and minions. You lose if either of your attendants die. You and your attendants start off with very low life. Make sure you use your supports to heal and use Satori to make them attack more viciously. 3. Claim all of the Shima within 20 seconds using only your commander. 4. You start off with low life, win the battle. Make sure you use your healing minions. 5. Defeat a powered up Hagoromo Gitsune. 6. Win within 25 seconds. 7. Defeat a powered up Nurarihyon. 8. Complete 10 consecutive battles with the team of your choice. =============================================================================== 6. DIFFICULT MODE ----------------------------------------- 1. Claim all the Shima within 10 seconds. -Using Kubinashi do the following: >Simultaneously claim the two Shima directly above you by immediately high jumping and using his side square attack in the air. >Claim the Shima in the upper left corner next using his side square attack. Do not jump all the way to top so you land on the platform, instead break it midjump just below it. >Air dash to the right and use his side square attack midfall to claim the Shima in the middle of the stage. >Simultaneously claim the two Shima to your right using his his side square attack. >High jump and double jump to the top and get the last Shima. 2. Claim all the Shima within 15 seconds. -Using Kubinashi do the following: >Immediately jump and air dash to the left. During the dair dash use his side square attack to claim the Shima above you. If you timed the start of your air dash correctly then you should land right next to the Shima in the lower left corner. Claim it using his side square attack. >High jump and claim the Shima above you with his side square attack. >Air dash to the right and claim the next Shima using his side square attack during the air dash. >Run to the right and claim the next Shima. Continue dropping down and claiming the Shima. >Dash to the middle of the stage and jump to get the last one. Following this you should have 2 to 3 seconds left on the clock. 3. Claim all the Shima within 15 seconds. -Using Itaku do the following: >High jump forward and use his triangle to claim the Shima directly in front of you. Continue holding forward and use his triangle again, this should break the next Shima to your right and place you on the platform. >High jump and double jump so that you are to the right of the Shima in the upper right corner. Use his triangle to the left to claim it. >Immediately after claiming the previous one, allow yourself to fall long enough so that you are in line with the two middle Shima. Use his triangle attack to the left to claim those two and continue doing it to the left and claim the Shima on the platform to the left. >High jump and double jump so you are to the left of the Shima in the upper left corner. Use his triangle attack to the right to claim the Shima and keep going to get the one in the top middle of the stage. You will probably have 4 to 5 seconds left on the clock. 4. Claim all the Shima within 10 seconds. -This one is a bit more difficult than the last few. Using Itaku do the follow: >High jump and double jump slightly forward so you are between the two Shima in the middle of the stage. Use his triangle attack to the right to simultaneous claim them. Continue using it the right and you will claim the next one too. >This next part may require you a few tries to get the timing and positioning right. If you did the previous step right you should have landed on top of the torii. High and double jump while holding right so you are positioned to the right of the Shima in the corner. Use his triangle attack to the left to simultaneous claim the two Shima. If your positioning is not correct then you will not get both. >Immediately after the last step use his triangle attack to the left one more time and continue holding left after it is over. If you did it right then you will land to the right of a Shima. Use your down square attack to claim it. >High jump and double jump while holding left so you will be to the right of the last two. A well placed triangle attack should simultaneous claim both of them. If you do not get them simultaneously, you should still have just enough time to get the other one. 5. Claim all the Shima within 10 seconds. -Using Nurarihyon do the following: >High jump slightly to the right and use his up triangle to claim all four of the middle Shima at once. Tsuchigumo will most likely get hit by this and it will do the grinding delay effect that I warned you against. This is fine though because you will still have enough time to finish the mission. >Forward high jump and use his up triangle to claim the rightmost Shima. >High jump and double jump while holding left and use his up triangle to claim the next Shima. >Immediately high jump and double jump while holding left and use his up triangle to claim the next Shima. >Doing this should put you in the left corner to the left of the last Shima. High jump and use his up triangle to get it. 6. Do a 30 hit combo using only your attendants and minions. 7. Do a 50 hit combo. You can use your attendants and minions, but not the Fear Gauge. 8. Do a 200 hit combo. There are no restrictions. This is surprisingly not as hard as it sounds simply because you are allowed to use the Fear Gauge. The general strategy is to use Kubinashi as your commander and as many multiple hitting minions as you can. Fill up your Fear Gauge, have all of your minions ready to summon, and get the opponent in the corner. Kubinashi's Ultimate does the most hits where the strings cross, so getting the opponent in the corner will be the position for this. Unleash all of your supports and your Ultimate so everything hits at once. While the opponent is being hit by the Ultimate, manually use your attendants to attack. I may put a step by step guide on how to complete this in a later version of the FAQ if needed. 9. Use your Ultimate within 30 seconds. 10. Win within 35 seconds. 11. Win within 15 seconds. 12. Win using only your attendants and minions. If your commander hits the opponent or the time runs out you lose. 13. Using only your commander win 5 consecutive matches against opponents that have a powered up commander. 14. The opponent has infinite Fear Gauge, defeat them. 15. The opponents are powered up and their minions charge incredibly fast. Defeat them before time runs out. =============================================================================== 7.
