[3] CHARACTERS [0300]

==============================================================================

The Cave features 7 playable characters. Before beginning your adventure, you
construct a party of three to enter the cave. Each character has their own
backstory, special ability, and specific area in The Cave. In order to fully
complete the game 100%, you must beat it with all 7 (meaning that multiple
playthroughs are in order). The following characters are listed in no
specific order.

______________________________________________________________________________
[ The Knight ]----------------------------------------------------------------

The Knight is on a quest for Excalibur, but along the way the player discovers
that the Knight isn't actually a knight at all; just a kid playing a game of
dress-up that escalated in a hurry. The Knight's special ability is
invincibility: press Y and the Knight creates a force field around him that
protects him from all damage. Moving cancels the barrier. His cave painting
symbol is a sword.

over heels for a fellow carnival worker and it is up to the lovable simpleton
to explore The Cave and win her heart. The Hillbilly's special ability is his
iron lungs: he can hold his breath underwater so long as you hold down Y while
below the surface. His cave painting symbol is a teddy bear.

should be no sweat. She is in search for her partners and forbidden treasure,
but judging by her greedy nature she may be more interested in the latter. The
Adventurer can use her whip to grab hold of perches and swing across pits. Her
cave painting symbol is an ankh.

button. Her cave painting symbol is an atom.

[ The Twins ]-----------------------------------------------------------------

The Twins are two innocent young children that simply want to have some fun in
the sun and play outside. Well, not quite. The Twins are actually demonic lil'
buggers that are on a mission to eliminate their bossy parents. The Twins can
create a ghost of themselves that can be used as a stand-in, so you basically
have a fourth character that can be used to pull levers and such. Their cave
painting symbol is a pair of burning coffins.

[4] WALKTHROUGH [0400]

==============================================================================

The game begins with a short monologue from The Cave (yes, it is a talking
cave) and descends onto the campgrounds containing the 7 playable characters.
You can scroll through the available characters with the D-Pad and hear little
tidbits about each one.

______________________________________________________________________________
==============================================================================
 The Entrance [0401]
==============================================================================

Once you have decided on a character, guide them to the right with the Left
Analog Stick and pick up the [CROWBAR] with the X button. Now approach the
[SHODDY BARRICADE] on the far left and use the crowbar to pry apart the wooden
beams. Once you go inside, the character you are controlling will be mapped to
Left on the D-Pad as Character 1.

With the crowbar still in your possession, proceed through the cavern and drop
down a few platforms until you reach a high wall. Head to the right to find a
crate and hold down the X button to grab it. Pull or push the crate to the
ledge and use it as a stepping stone to the bridge. As explained by the sign,
the bridge cannot support three people.

Now press Right on the D-Pad to select a second character. Once you pick
Character 2 (mapped to Up on the D-Pad), reunite them with your first
character on the bridge. Do this once more with Character 3 (mapped to Right
on the D-Pad) and the three characters will collapse the bridge and send them
tumbling.

As any of your three characters, pull yourself out of the water and enter The
Cave's gift shop. Talk to the Gift Shop Clerk with X to learn about his small
trinket dilemma. When you go to leave, the clerk asks you to retrieve the
three trinkets. Press B to pick up the [NOVELTY-SIZED KEY] and bring it across
the pool to the ["EMPLOYEES ONLY" DOOR].

Shimmy down the rope and slide down the ladder to drop down next to a [BROKEN
OLD WELL]. Jump across the gap and pull the [LEVER] next to the gate. Now take
control of another character and bring them down past the Broken Old Well;
there is another [LEVER] below. With the two levers pulled, the gate opens.

Use the third character to go through the gate and have them pull the [LEVER]
past the spike pit; this keeps the gate open and allows everyone to regroup on
the other side.

Run to the left to reach a [BELL] and [PIT OF SPIKES]. Don't jump across the
spikes, or else you'll succumb to the fire breath of a Crystal Monster.

Fortunately, there is no real penalty for dying in The Cave and you respawn
immediately in or around the same area where you perished (however, the
"Who Wants to Live Forever" Achievement requires you to exit The Cave without
having a single character die). Instead, jump on the wooden platforms and work
your way to the top of the room.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
The first [CAVE PAINTING] is on a ledge above the [BELL]. Jump up the wooden
platforms and you'll find the glowing painting on the wall.

There is a set number of Cave Paintings found in the game, but they may look
different on different playthroughs because they only correspond to the three
characters you are controlling.

There are a few rare instances where you may find a Cave Painting that you
cannot collect because it is for a character that you aren't using, but they
don't count towards the total amount. There are always at least 24 total Cave
Paintings you can collect in one playthrough, meaning that you can finish each
of the three character's Cave Painting set by the time you exit The Cave.

Further up is an [OLD WELL], and higher up is a [FUSE BOX] and [LEVERS AND
SUCH]. Due to the dripping water from the ceiling, any attempt to tinker with
the fuse box will result in your death.

Have the character with the crowbar climb up to the Old Well. Turning the
crank doesn't do anything, so stand next to the well and press X with the
crowbar equipped to remove the [RUSTY CRANK]. Drop the crowbar and carry the
rusty crank back to the Broken Old Well. Insert the crank into the well to
destroy it and receive a [BUCKET].

  Cave Painting
  -------------
By inserting the [RUSTY CRANK] into the [BROKEN OLD WELL], the well explodes
and you can jump to the other side to retrieve the [CAVE PAINTING].

With that out of the way, grab the bucket and carry it all the way back to the
fuse box. You can place the bucket on top of the box to catch the water and
prevent death by electrocution. Now you can remove the [FUSE] safely (this
turns off the Levers and Such).

There was an [EMPTY FUSE BOX] next to one of the levers before, so head there
and place the fuse into the Empty Fuse Box. This powers up the [HOT DOG
MACHINE] and [NEW GROG MACHINE]. Drinking a [NEW GROG] doesn't do anything to
my knowledge, so instead order a [HOT DOG].

If you want an Achievement (that requires you to die), bring a hot dog over
to the Pit of Spikes and press X at the edge to skewer the dog. By jumping
across, the Crystal Monster roasts both you and the hot dog, presenting you
with the "Well Done" Achievement.

Achievement or not, make sure to place a hot dog on the Pit of Spikes. Now
have someone retrive the fuse and return it to the Empty Fuse Box near the
Levers and Such. With the Levers and Such operating again, position one of
your characters at this spot. Bring a second character down to the bell.

Ring the bell to attract the Crystal Monster over to the hot dog, then quickly
switch over to your other character and flip the Levers and Such to capture
the beast. This is an easy example of having to control characters near-
simultaneously in order to solve puzzles.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
There is a [CAVE PAINTING] in plain sight down the hallway after capturing
  the Crystal Monster.

Pass by the monster's lair and collect the [CAVE PAINTING] before jumping down
into the lake. Climb onto dry land and descend the ladders to a dead end.
Inspect the [BOX OF DYNAMITE] for a stick and carry it back up the ladders.
Light the [DYNAMITE] using the [FLAME], then hurry up and drop it (B button)
next to the pile of boulders to clear out a path.

Up ahead is the first trinket: the [JEWELED SKULL]. Drop down and continue to
the right. If you have a Scientist in your party you can hack the [DOOR
CONTROL CONSOLE] to keep the door open; otherwise have a character stand on
the pressure plate to open the door for your other two friends. Make sure to
take the underwater path underneath the gate to retrieve the [THESPIANSHIP
AWARD].

You should have two trinkets now. Guide your second character through the gate
and leave them on the other pressure plate to keep the gate ajar. Once all
three characters are through the gate, have the third character ascend the
ladder and retrieve the [CURSED GUITAR].

During your first playthrough, these will be the trinkets. But on subsequent
playthroughs, the trinkets will change depending on if you chose the bad
ending for any of the characters.

Press the [ELEVATOR CALL BUTTON] and gather everyone on the elevator, then hit
it again to ride back up to the two vending machines. From here you can
backtrack to the gift shop and fork over the three trinkets. Talk to the Gift
Shop Clerk to have him open The Cave for you.

  Shoplifting/Remorse
  -------------------
The "Shoplifting" and "Remorse" Achievements are kind of a package deal. To
unlock "Shoplifting", you must grab the [POSTCARD] from the [POSTCARD
DISPLAY] and carry it into The Cave. The hard part is bringing it all the
way through The Cave and returning it for the "Remorse" Achievement.

It is a bit tedious, but you essentially have to designate one of your three
characters to primary postcard holder for the entire game. Fortunately, the
game rarely features puzzles where you need to use all three characters at
one time. The game autosaves when you travel to a new area, which can be
good and bad. There are a few times where you'll have to abandon it for a
while, but you'll always be able to return and pick up the postcard again
  before leaving an area.

Check out the [OLD SIGN] for a chuckle and jump down the hole. Walk to the
left and have someone grab onto the weighted rope. The weight of the character
triggers the pulley system and raises the weight on the left, allowing you to
jump the gap.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
The [CAVE PAINTING] is found in the entrance of the cave, to the left of the
  rope and pulley system.

Down on the floor, move underneath the weights and have the first character
get off the rope so the character on the floor can proceed. Grab the metal box
and pull it to the left, positioning it between the two weights and under the
edge of the platform. Now the two characters on the upper level can jump off
the edge and land on the box without dying.

Have all three characters stand on the pressure plate to open the exit. Follow
the "Cave Tour" sign to eventually reach the next area.

==============================================================================
 The Castle [0402]
==============================================================================

This is the first character-specific area. If the Knight is in your party,
then you must proceed through the castle in order to continue through The
Cave. If not, then the exit will be open for you. All seven characters have
their own specific area.

______________________________________________________________________________
[ With the Knight ]-----------------------------------------------------------

Follow the tunnel until you reach a Cave Tour sign pointing down a fiery hole.
Heeding the sign's advice sounds like a death wish, but not with the Knight's
special ability. Jump down the shaft and press Y in the air to create a
force field that protects you from the flames.

Walk to the left to meet the king, who tells you to win over his daughter's
heart before taking a stab at claiming Excalibur. Head to the right, drop down
the hole, and proceed through the gate into the castle courtyard. Climb up the
ropes and ladders to the princess's balcony. In order to win over her heart
(not really though), you must retrieve a gold token from the dragon's den.

Return to the ground and enter the castle. The path splits, so follow the
dragon sign to eventually reach the dragon's den. Take the dragon's food bowl
and push it off the ledge, then go after it and lean it against the wall. Hop
on top and over the wall.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
Down in the dragon's den, push the food bowl off the ledge and use it to
reach the top of the high wall. There's a [CAVE PAINTING] up here.

Traverse underneath the dragon, then up the ladder. You can see the [DRAGON
TREASURE] through the locked [DRAGON GATE] - you'll have to find a key of
sorts in order to unlock it (the Monk can use his special ability to retrieve
the treasure without any of the upcoming hoopla).

Continue up the ropes to end up back at the fork. Now follow the princess sign
and begin your ascent up the castle. The [DRAGON GATE KEY] is in a small room
protected by a [GUARD], and even stepping off the ladder will cause him to
kill you.

Continue up the ladder and climb the stairs. There's another [GUARD] near a
[CRATE OF DYNAMITE], so ignore him and step onto the elevator. Bring another
character up here and have them control the elevator's [LEVER]. While you're
at it, bring the third character and have them stay on the ladder near the
archer guarding the Dragon Gate Key.

With the Knight on the elevator, pull the lever with the second character so
he begins descending down the side of the tower; make sure to press Y to make
the Knight invincible. Now switch over to the third character spying on the
archer. When the Knight passes by the window, the guard will shoot at him,
but to no avail. With the guard's back turned, quickly sneak past him and
pick up the Dragon Gate Key.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
While you are still on the elevator, make sure to make a pit stop at the
second floor window to find a [CAVE PAINTING] inside.

If you don't care about getting killed, have the key holder deliberately get
shot. Otherwise, you must distract the guard again to escape the room. Now use
the key to open the Dragon Gate, but don't go any further. You'll have to
provide a similar distraction in order to get the Dragon Treasure unscathed.

Have someone stand at the gate, then bring the Knight down and around to the
den's main entrance. Jump towards the dragon and press Y in midair to protect
yourself as the dragon breathes fire at the Knight. Now switch to the other
character, grab the Dragon Treasure, and get the heck outta there.

Of course, the careless heroes forgot to close the Dragon Gate. The climb up
the castle is a bit more grisly-looking than before; when you reach the
princess's room and insert the treasure in the [COIN MACHINE], you'll be
treated to a much different scene in mind. Snag the [BLOODY AMULET] and hand
it off to the Knight. During your descent, make sure to stop at the Crate of
Dynamite and pick up a piece of [DYNAMITE].

As the Knight, deliver the Bloody Amulet to the king. Now that the drawbridge
has been lowered, try your hand at [EXCALIBUR]. Unsurprisingly, you won't be
able to remove it from the stone. Time for Plan B.

Switch over to the character with the dynamite. Head to the intersection and
go left towards the dragon's den, then follow the skull sign to eventually
reach the dungeon. Stand on the platform directly underneath the Knight and
Excalibur, then use a [FLAME] to light the dynamite. Blast apart the rocks
underneath Excalibur to essentially free the sword on its own. Now the Knight
should have no problem picking up the sword.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
There is a [CAVE PAINTING] down in the dungeon, on the far left side.

The king runs off to find his daughter and prepare for the wedding you just
signed onto. Escaping through the doorway on the left may seem like the best
possible option, but return to the princess's room in the castle to receive
the "Royal Buffet" Achievement.

Return to the king's chambers and exit stage left. Proceed through the empty
garden and down the waterfall.

______________________________________________________________________________
[ Without the Knight ]--------------------------------------------------------

If the Knight is not in your party, the door on the far left will be open.
Jump over the first gap and then the fire-filled chasm and proceed past the
Cave Tour sign. Climb up the steps and follow the tunnel down another
waterfall.

 The Carnival [0403]
==============================================================================
______________________________________________________________________________
[ With the Hillbilly ]--------------------------------------------------------

Switch over to the Hillbilly and hold down Y to hold your breath forever: use
it to swim through the long, windy underwater passage to the carnival's
entrance. Inspect the [CRATE OF DYNAMITE] and light the [DYNAMITE] with the
[FLAME], then blow a hole open in the wall so your companions can join you.

Enter the carnival and marvel as the stunning [AMAZING TWO-LEGGED LADY]. You
know, the Hillbilly has a sort of a school boy crush on her, and he would do
anything to win over her heart. It looks like she desires a [PINK BEAR], and
one is available here at the carnival for a low, low price of five tickets.

Walk past the bear and take the first [CARNIVAL TICKET] from the small child,
then place it in the [TICKET TAKER]. Only four more to go! Continue to the
left, past the [TEST YOUR STRENGTH MACHINE], and over to the [DUNKING BOOTH].
Jump on top of the booth and bring another character along for the fun. Have
them activate the dunking booth to send the Hillbilly down into the water.

Don't worry about the underwater tunnel to the right and instead swim to the
left and up.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
Down below the [DUNKING BOOTH], swim to the left and climb up the ladder to
reach the [CAVE PAINTING] overlooking the booth.

You will receive another [CARNIVAL TICKET] for a successful dunk, so place it
in the Ticket Taker. Head to the second floor of the carnival and stay to the
left. Jump past the [WHEEL OF MISFORTUNE] and climb the ladder to find a
[GENERATOR TRUCK] and a [WRENCH]. Stay here.

As another character, head towards the Wheel of Misfortune and instead climb
up the ladder to the third floor. On the left is a stage. For now, go to the
right and ride the ferris wheel to the very top, where you'll find a [FUSE
BOX]. To remove the [FUSE], you must first have another player use the wrench
on the Generator Truck to power the fuse box down.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
There is a [CAVE PAINTING] in a small alcove at the very top of the
carnival, accessible by riding the ferris wheel.

Backtrack to the Exotic Clothed Dancers stage with the fuse and place the fuse
into the [EMPTY FUSE BOX] (again, disable the Generator Truck prior to
insertion). This will power on the stage and start the show, which attracts
the attention of some [CARNIES]. With the carnies out of the way, you can now
retrieve the [SLEDGEHAMMER] from the carny corner.

Take the sledgehammer down to the Test Your Strength Machine and use it to get
a new high score. Take the [CARNIVAL TICKET] to the Ticket Taker. You should
only need two more tickets.

Take the fuse back and carry it all the way to the right, past the [MAN OF
ORDINARY STRENGTH], and insert it into the [EMPTY FUSE BOX] next to the
fortune teller [XAVETAR].

The "Don't Fill Up On Fortune Cookies" Achievement requires several
playthroughs, but in order to unlock it you must talk to Xavetar with all 7
characters. In order to use Xavetar more than once during a single
playthrough, you must talk to him BEFORE you use the Wheel of Misfortune:
once you get the ticket from the Wheel of Misfortune, Xavetar shuts down. So
make sure to talk to him with all three characters before you get that ticket!

You shouldn't have to move any fuses around, so you can leave the Generator
Truck (take the wrench) with you. Stop at the Wheel of Misfortune, which is
purely a game of luck. Well, not quite.

Have someone talk to Xavetar to receive their fortune and pay attention to the
color of Xavetar's crystal ball. Back at the Wheel of Misfortune, use the
[COLOR PICKER] to pick the exact same color and pull the [LEVER] - you'll get
it right every time. I guess he really can predict the future! Once again,
bring the [CARNIVAL TICKET] to the Ticket Taker.

The final ticket can be claimed at the [GUESS YOUR WEIGHT MACHINE]. The
[BARKER] is always right, so no matter who you step on the scale with or what
items you toss on it, he will always guess the correct weight. Time to bend
the rules a bit.

Head up to the Man of Ordinary Strength and borrow his [BARBELL]. Now enter
Magnifico the Magnificent's tent, which is next to the weight-guessing
machine. If you watch his show, [MAGNIFICO] will make the cupcake on the
table disappear in thin air! Bring the barbell to the [MAGICIAN'S TABLE] and
he will make it disappear as well. Well, not exactly.

The barbell is now invisible, which will help throw off the barker (just make
sure not to drop the barbell or else it will become visible again). Stand on
the scale with the invisible barbell and have the barker guess the weight.
Of course, he doesn't take into account items that cannot be seen, so he
guesses wrong. And they say cheaters never prosper...

To get the "Weight of the Beast" Achievement, you must get the scale to read
666lbs. In order to do this, your party must consist of the Knight, Hillbilly,
and Time Traveler. In addition, have each character carry the sledgehammer,
barbell, and wrench - it should come out to 666lbs.

With the final [CARNIVAL TICKET] in hand, use it to win the Pink Bear. Carry
the Pink Bear over to the Two-Legged Lady, only to... oh no! Now that the
Hillbilly is on a hate-filled quest for revenge, return to the prize booth to
discover a new prize: a [LIGHTER]. It only costs one ticket, and that one
[CARNIVAL TICKET] can be snatched from the hands of a nearby child (again).

If you use the lighter on the pile of [HAY BALES] behind the two lovers, the
firemen will immediately put it out. Swap the lighter for the wrench and make
your way back to the dunking booth. Have someone drop the Hillbilly in the
water and hold your breath as you swim through the long passage. Use the
wrench on the [PIPE VALVE NUT] to shut off the water supply.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
There is another [CAVE PAINTING] down in the tunnel, to the right of the
  [PIPE VALVE NUT].

Now try lighting the hay bales one more time. The firefighters won't have an
answer to their problem, and the carnival - with everyone inside - promptly
burns to the ground.

To actually get the hay bales to completely catch fire, walk back towards the
Test Your Strength Machine; the fire cuts you off, so go back to the exit and
the path should be unblocked. Now you can proceed through The Cave to reach
the mine.

______________________________________________________________________________
[ Without the Hillbilly ]-----------------------------------------------------

If the Hillbilly is not in your party, you can simply jump down the second
waterfall and continue to the right, ignoring the carnival signs. Up ahead you
will reach the mine.

______________________________________________________________________________
==============================================================================
 The Mine [0404]
==============================================================================

Have two characters pull the two [LEVERS] to trigger a small quake, releasing
a boulder from the ceiling. Hop onto the boulder and across, then go down the
ladder. Note the flame on the wall and a pile of rocks to the right. Move down
the ladder and rope to find another flame and rock pile. Continue your descent
(there is a third flame and rock pile on the other side of the hole) to
encounter the miner.

Apparently pulling those two levers caused a minor (miner) cave-in, as
evidenced by all the blocked passages you spotted, and the miner has become
separated from his three mine cars. As a results, he punishes the trio by
hurling sticks of [DYNAMITE] at them, along with some other items.

There is an Achievement you can get here, and you can make progress towards
another one. For starters, leave the [CAN OF CORN] on the ground and let one
of the dynamite sticks blow it up, leaving a [DESTROYED CAN OF CORN] in the
wake of the explosion. Second, gather all three characters together in a
tight-knit group on the tracks and let a stick of dynamite kill everyone,
resulting in the "Fire In The Hole" Achievement.

Grab the [BUCKET] the miner dropped and climb back up the long rope. Dip the
bucket in the [WATER PUDDLE] you passed. You can now use the [BUCKET OF WATER]
to extinguish the miner's dynamite.

Grab a piece of wet dynamite from the miner and climb back up to the water
puddle. You must use three pieces of dynamite to destroy the three cave-ins,
using the nearby [FLAMES]. Going up and down gets tedious, but there's nothing
you can do about it.

The three mine cars are beyond each of the three rock piles; it does not
matter which order you retrieve them. You will need the miner's [SHOVEL] for
the top path, so make sure to grab it off the track. It's also the easiest one
to get since you only need one character.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
The [CAVE PAINTING] is in an alcove in the corner of the uppermost mine car
  room.

Head down the ladders and onto the track to find the mine car. You can push
the car and hop in as it goes through the gateway, but the track goes in a
circle and only brings you back to where you started. With the shovel in hand,
push the cart down the slope and jump in. As you ride through the gate, press
X just before you pass under the [TRACK SWITCH] to slide the track over and
guide the car down to the miner.

Ditch the shovel and climb up the rope to the other two entrances. Bring all
three characters to the middle pathway. The room here contains platforms on
three levels, and a scale can be raised and lowered between them to create
bridges.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
All the way on the upper left corner of the middle room is the [CAVE
  PAINTING].

The gateway is on the left side of the room on the central level. You can move
the scale by placing the mine car or having characters stand on them. It's a
pretty simple puzzle that can be solved a handful of ways.

Have a character stand on the right side of the scale to drop the platform,
then get a second player to drag the car onto the platform. Now move two
characters on the left scale to balance things out and let the third pull the
car into the center of the room. Now place one character on each side to
keep the scale in the middle and shift the car on the left side of the scale.
Finally, put two characters on the right and have the third one push the car
to freedom.

You only need two players to deliver the final mine car to the miner. In this
room you find a mine car, a large claw powered by a [CLAW LEVER], and a gate
that prohibits the mine car from passing.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
This [CAVE PAINTING] is found in the bottom mine car room, next to the [CLAW
  LEVER].

Have someone push the mine car underneath the claw and hold it in place as you
switch to the player manning the Claw Lever. Activate it to dump a pile of
gold into the car. Push it the rest of the way, and the money-sniffing gate
machine grants you access to the gateway.

The three mine cars have been returned to their rightful owner, but the
reunion is short-lived once the three of you step on the track... you can
probably guess what happens next. Goldurn it!

 The Pyramid [0405]
==============================================================================
______________________________________________________________________________
[ With the Adventurer ]-------------------------------------------------------

The large stone wall retreats into the side of the cave, revealing a long
spike pit that can only be crossed using the Adventurer's special ability.
Stand on the pressure plate to lower the spikes, allowing your two friends to
make it across.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
You can locate another [CAVE PAINTING] inside a small chamber as you climb
up the side of the pyramid.

Start heading up the side of the pyramid, then up and over the top, and then
down the other side. Drop down to the pyramid's interior and swing across
another spike pit to be reunited by your old treasure hunter partner. If you
walk ahead your teammates should automatically join you by your side.

The sarcophagus is in a room above your current location, and it'll take some
quick wits in order to get there. Ignore the first ladder, for it only takes
you to a locked door, and climb up the second one. If you step off and
position all three characters in front of the hieroglyph, then you will get
the "Walk Like An Adventurer" Achievement.

Up ahead is an [ANKH RECESS], so you must first find the Ankh. Return to the
ladder and slide all the way down, then descend down the incredibly tall one
to your left. To the right is a Cave Tour sign and the [ANKH]; take it and
place it in the Ankh Recess to open a door.

Walk forward and step on the rabbit switch. This opens up a hole in the floor
with an identical rabbit hieroglyph looming overhead. Keep the Adventurer on
top of the switch while the other two characters proceed to the hole in the
ground. This places them in a room with four switches, each marked with an
animal hieroglyph.

The two players are sealed in the switch room once they enter; it's up to them
to step on switches and open up new pathways for the Adventurer to explore.
The door above the Adventurer is marked with a snake and a lion: hit the two
switches to open the door and send her through. Now have one person stand on
the jackal switch to make a hook appear that you can grapple to as the
Adventurer.

Swing to the next ledge, where moving spikes pose a problem. To slow them down
considerably, have one person stand on the crane switch (make sure the crane
is the only switch active). Once the Adventurer is across, step off the crane
switch and onto the snake switch to take care of the next spike pit.

As you proceed with the Adventurer, you will activate a switch that makes a
set of spikes appear on the ceiling in the switch room. Now your two other
characters will not be able to jump, so be careful. Run onto the lion switch
next, then control the Adventurer as she falls off the ledge and onto another
spike switch. Now the two trapped characters REALLY have a tight space to work
with.

To slow down the next moving spike trap, place two characters on the crane and
jackal switches. Sprint across, then quickly grapple to safety. A third spike
switch must be stepped on as you enter the sarcophagus room. Your two allies
are safe, but you have little breathing room. Grab hold of the sarcophagus,
then shift one character onto the snake switch so the snake and crane are
both activated.

Push the sarcophagus off the ledge, then to the left onto an elevator. As the
elevator lowers to the exit, you must use the other two partners to open
hatches so the elevator can continue its course.

Place the Adventurer on top of the sarcophagus so she rides down the elevator
shaft with it. First open the hatch with her using the switch on the left.
Step off and run down the passage to the right. Don't drop down the hole just
yet and shift one of the other characters onto the jackal switch. Now bring
the Adventurer through the jackal door so she can open up the second hatch. If
you don't make it in time, the elevator returns to the top and you must try
again.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
If you head left past the second hatch switch, you'll descend to a dead end
  with the [CAVE PAINTING].

Witch the second hatch open and the elevator still on its way to the bottom,
dash back through the jackal door and drop down the hole. Move your other
player from the jackal to the lion switch, which allows the Adventurer to
proceed to the third hatch switch.

With the sarcophagus at the bottom of the elevator shaft, all you have to do
is push it to freedom. Pull it out from the corner and begin pushing it down
the tunnel, choosing to ignore your partner leaning precariously over a pit of
spikes. Bowl through the unlucky chap and use his corpse as a bridge across
the spikes.

Alas, karma strikes as the Adventurer plummets into a hole and destroys the
sarcophagus. Now you must use all three characters to devise an escape plan.
If you head to the dead end as the Adventurer, you'll find a set of three
switches: the one in the center is an ankh, but I don't know what the other
two symbols are.

Basically, what you have to do is recreate the three hieroglyphs next to the
Adventurer using switch combinations. For example, the first one depicts a
snake, jackal, and "weird striped thing". A flame will light up to symbolize a
successful attempt. Do this with all three hieroglyphs.

A portion of the floor crumbles from the switch room, which allows your two
characters to escape. Now push the block down to the Adventurer; place the
block on the nearby switch to summon a ladder to safety. Finally, have all
three characters stand on the pressure plate to open the exit.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
You should pass the [CAVE PAINTING] on your way through the pyramid's exit.

Follow the Cave Tour signs to completely exit the pyramid and enter a new
portion of The Cave.

______________________________________________________________________________
[ Without the Adventurer ]----------------------------------------------------

If the Adventurer is not in your party, you can still go through the stone
door on the left, but the spike pit will now be replaced by a hole. Drop down
the hole to end up at the pyramid's exit.

==============================================================================
 The House [0406]
==============================================================================
______________________________________________________________________________
[ With the Twins ]------------------------------------------------------------

If the Twins are in your party, take the upper path at the intersection. You
will run into three [GATE SWITCHES] and an old Victorian-style gate. Have all
three characters take control of a switch, then take control of the Twins and
activate their special ability: the ghost continues to operate the switch,
allowing you to pass through... just make sure to jump over the hole so you
don't fall and die in the pile of bones!

Proceed down the steps until you reach the house entrance and go inside. The
house is maze-like and can be disorienting at first, but after roaming around
for a bit you should become more familiarized with the layout. You almost
immediately reach a three-way fork: take the middle path to approach the exit,
which is blocked by [DADDY]. Grab the [UMBRELLA] and turn back.

Bring the umbrella to the upper path and all the way to the top of the house;
use it on the [ATTIC HATCH] to enter the attic.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
The [CAVE PAINTING] is found inside the attic, which can be accessed by
using the [UMBRELLA] on the [ATTIC HATCH].

Ignore everything else in the attic for now and return to the fork, then take
the lower path. When you can, hang a left to meet [MUMMY] in the kitchen. She
asks the two of you to fetch some food for the dog, however the food is beyond
the locked cellar door.

Pick up the [HAMMER] behind Mummy and return to the attic. Smash down the
[LOOSE FLOORBOARD] with the hammer and go to the right to find a [FUSE BOX].
Remove the [FUSE] from it and push the box out of the attic. Continue pushing
the box of fine china down the stairs to the foyer (along the way, place the
fuse in the [EMPTY FUSE BOX] across from the study).

Haul the box into the kitchen and in front of the elevator door behind Mummy.
Pull the [DUMBWAITER SWITCH] once to deliver the box to the second floor, then
once again to bring it to the third floor (the room where the fuse should now
be). Backtrack to the third floor and now push the box against the high wall,
allowing you to reach the window (LucasArts fans will immediately recognize
[CHUCK THE PLANT] hanging out in this room).

You now have access to the roof, but there isn't much you can do up there now.
Go back to the kitchen and pull the Dumbwaiter Switch to open the elevator
door, then create a ghost placeholder with Y and get in the elevator. You will
enter your parents' room, which was locked from the outside.

For starters, jump on top of your parents' bed until it breaks, giving you the
"Such Bad Children" Achievement. Next, pick up the [EMPTY CHAMBER POT] and
press X next to the [PARENTS' ROOM DOOR] to open it from the inside. Back in
the kitchen, climb the ladder to the bathroom and fill up the chamber pot
using the [FAUCET].

Bring the full chamber pot to the room where you sent the box of china. Jump
on the box and exit through the window to the roof. Run over to the [CHIMNEY]
and dump the water down the chute to extinguish the fire below. Slide down
into the study to find the [SKELETON KEY], which opens all locked doors. Use
it to get out, then on the [LIVING ROOM DOOR].

  Cave Painting
  -------------
Inside the living room, push over the [BOOKSHELF] to find a [CAVE PAINTING]
  hiding behind it.

The final locked door is the [CELLAR DOOR] down at the bottom of the house.
Pop it open to find the [DOG FOOD] inside. On the far left is a box of [RAT
POISON] in the corner; this is your ticket out of the house, but it is being
blocked by an open steam pipe.

For now, take the dog food and pour it in the [EMPTY DOG BOWL] in the kitchen.
This distracts the [GUARD DOG], allowing the other two players access into the
front yard. Switch to another character and drop down from the ledge. Jump
across the hole and interact with the [PILE OF BONES] to obtain a [FEMUR]. Now
drop down the hole behind you and continue through the tunnel.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
The [CAVE PAINTING] is found in a tunnel leading to the [GUARD DOG]'s post.
It's only active if the Twins are in your party.

Continue to the right, staying in the tunnel underneath the house. You should
end up in a section directly underneath the cellar. Turn off the [STEAM VALVE]
(I think a lame "Half Life 3 release confirmed!!1" joke goes here), then have
the Twins pick up the rat poison.

Bring the Twins into the kitchen and stand near Mummy and the [POT OF SOUP].
Deliberately dumping poison into the family dinner is frowned upon in this
house, so you'll have to distract Mummy before you do the dee. Take control of
the character with the femur and head up to the guard dog. Press X to wiggle
the femur and wake up the dog. While Mummy has her back turned, pour the rat
poison in the soup.

For once in their lives, have the Twins do what they are told and wash up in
the bathroom. By the time you turn on the faucet and return to the kitchen,
Mummy and Daddy will already have croaked. Pick up the Skeleton Key again and
use it on the [FRONT DOOR] to escape.

Fall down the hole. The blue steel door on the right leads to the time
machine, but you won't have to worry about it if the Time Traveler is not in
your party. Otherwise, descend the ladder and move through the tunnel
underneath the house. If you continue to the left, you should find a gate and
another trio of [GATE SWITCHES]. Pull all three to open the gate and enter the
zoo.

______________________________________________________________________________
[ Without the Twins ]---------------------------------------------------------

If the Twins are not in your party, ignore the front gate leading to the
house, since you won't have the means to open it. Descend past the guard dog's
post and take the ladder directly down to the zoo entrance.

==============================================================================
 The Time Machine [0407]
==============================================================================
______________________________________________________________________________
[ With the Time Traveler ]----------------------------------------------------

The entrance to the zoo will be locked, so instead go to the right and travel
underneath the spooky house. Climb the ladder and you should come to a [LOCKED
DOOR]. Go up the ladder here as well and head to the right. Stalagmites block
your way; press Y to use the Time Traveler's special ability and pass right
through them. The [LOCKED DOOR] below you serves as the exit, so you must find
a way through.

The [TIME MACHINE] is directly to your right and will be of great use to you
in order to solve the area's puzzles. For now, ignore it and go to the right.
I'll refer to this area as the present, since, you know, this is the present.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
In the present, go up the ladder to the right of the [TIME MACHINE] and you
will spot a [CAVE PAINTING] at the top.

At the top of the ladder, head left and phase through the stalagmites (notice
the drips traveling through the ceiling and down the floor below you). On the
other side, take the large stone block and pull it away from the wall so you
can reach the [FUSE BOX] on the ledge.

Return to the ground and slide down to the floor below. Stick the [FUSE] into
the [EMPTY FUSE BOX] to turn on the Time Machine, then hop in to transport
yourself to the future. Don't get out and hit the button again to go back in
time.

Your first order of business is to reunite the Time Traveler with her friends.
In the past, climb up the ladder and head to the spot where you found the
fuse. The stone block is still here, so pull it on top of the puddle to
prevent the flow of brown liquid. Now hop back in the Time Machine and return
to the present; the first stalagmite formation should now be gone and your two
compadres can enter the area.

Now load everyone onto the Time Machine and go into the future. Have the Time
Traveler phase through the force field to enter the museum owned by the Time
Traveler's rival, the [GREATEST EMPLOYEE OF ALL TIME]. Disable the force field
by flipping the [MUSEUM DOOR BUTTON] and have everyone go inside.

Continue all the way to the right and down past the Smurg Exhibit. I guess
keys are referred to as "Smurgs" by future folk. Weird. Slide down the ladder
and proceed to the left.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
In the future, there is a [CAVE PAINTING] down below the Smurg exhibit and
  on the far left.

Drop down and make your way to the [DINOSAUR EXHIBIT]. Group all three players
together at the exhibit and press the button to hit everyone with dinosaur
spray at once, giving you the "Smells Like Team Spirit" Achievement.

In reality, you only need one character smelling like a dinosaur. Bring the
stinky player and one other character back to the Time Machine and head to the
past. Have both characters follow the same general route to locate a sleeping
dinosaur.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
In the past, head down towards [THOG] and the dinosaur; the [CAVE PAINTING]
is inside a small alcove to the right of the ladder leading down to Thog.

Leave the scent-less character at the top of the ladder while the other wakes
up the dinosaur and entices him with the magical pheromones. With the dinosaur
smitten, run back to the left and stay at the base of the ladder; the creature
won't be able to go any further and will stay put. Now bring Character 2 and
take one of caveman [THOG]'s defunct wheels and push it right onto the dino's
noggin.

Go past Thog and up the ladder, then head to the dead end on the far right to
find a boulder inside of a half-pipe, with some brown liquid trickling from
the ceiling. Pull the boulder out of the way so the water and drip into the
hole in the ground. Stay here and have someone else teleport to the present.

Moving the boulder out of the way will have created a [WELL] in that exact
location in the present. Have this character hold onto the well crank with X
and stay in place. Lastly, take your third character and head to the future.
With your other two players preoccupied, have the third character go to the
Rangfust Exhibit. You can see the skeletons of your two friends here at the
exhibit - a neat touch.

Take the [BUCKET] (err, the Rangfust) and make your way down to the Dinosaur
Exhibit. The death and subsequent extinction of the dinosaur will have left a
pool of [OIL] in its place - scoop some up in the bucket and bring it to the
[COMBUSTION ENGINE] at the museum entrance. Fill up the [ENGINE OIL INTAKE]
and ride the elevator to find a wheel.

Push the wheel onto the elevator and hit the [ELEVATOR BUTTON], then haul the
wheel back to the Time Machine and transport the wheel to the past with you.
Next, push the wheel through the entire area and it'll bounce all the way down
to Thog.

Thog runs down to the wheel, which has landed in the exact spot where you
offed the dinosaur. See a trend here? Grab one of Thog's stone wheels and toss
it off the edge. With Thog no more, you can return to the future to discover
that the Greatest Employee Of All Time has been wiped from history and the
museum now belongs to the Time Traveler!

Now you can take the [SMURG] without consequence. Bring it back to the present
and use it to open the Locked Door. Unlock the second Locked Door and run to
the left, unlocking the third Locked Door. Now you can enter the zoo.

______________________________________________________________________________
[ Without the Time Traveler ]-------------------------------------------------

If the Time Traveler is not in your party, you can continue past the entrance
to the time machine entirely, and there will be no Locked Doors to worry
about. The door will still be closed and you can follow the tunnel leading to
the zoo.

______________________________________________________________________________
==============================================================================
 The Zoo [0408]
==============================================================================

The first character that crosses the line through the zoo will be killed by a
returning Crystal Monster. Well, not really killed, but they will be out of
commission for a short period of time. Just like that, a hunter chases after
the monster with a hunting rifle. Bring your other two characters across the
hole and to the left.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
If you swim through the [ELECTRIC EEL] pool, you can find a [CAVE PAINTING]
  on the other side.

Enter the food court to find the beast hunter, who promptly discards her
"broken" [BATTERYLESS TAPE RECORDER]. Take the tape recorder but don't go any
closer, unless you want a personal introduction from the hunter's gun. Forget
about the hot dogs for now and take the tape recorder down the passage below
the food court.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
There is another [CAVE PAINTING] in the passage underneath the food court.
  Not that hard to miss.

Walk across the stone bridge (which looks a bit flimsy, according to all the
warning signs) and past the ladder to find the sleeping monster. Approach it
and the [CRYSTAL CAVE MONSTER] will throw you into the room behind it, where
you will be reunited by your "fallen" companion.

Have the third character follow the same trail as the one before so that all
three players are together in the same room. Climb the ladder and go up to the
top, then push the metal box down to the ground. Leave it in the left corner
so that you can reach the ledge above.

Walk past the [LEVER] and enter the cavern. This cavern is the resting place
for the previous three adventurers: the pirate, the robot, and the clown.
Honking the [CLOWN]'s nose enough times eventually makes him an [AROUSED
CLOWN]. Funny stuff. Anyways, inspect the [DEAD ROBOT] to receive a [DEAD
BATTERY]. The battery ain't charged though, but you are still one step closer
to getting that blasted tape recorder working.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
The [CAVE PAINTING] is located inside the cavern behind the [CRYSTAL CAVE
  MONSTER], at a dead end.

Have one of the other two characters up to the cavern and have them be in
control of the lever. This will raise an elevator; the elevator itself is
useless, but it opens up a hole in the ground. Place the dead battery in the
Batteryless Tape Recorder to get an [UNPOWERED TAPE RECORDER], and take it
through the hole in the ground.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
This [CAVE PAINTING] is below the elevator, next to the [DOOR CONTROL
  CONSOLE] on the left.

If you have the Scientist in your party, you can hack the Door Control Console
to keep the door open. Otherwise, have the second character use the [LEVER]
down here to open the door for the player holding the tape recorder. Walk
through and climb the ladder to return to the stone bridge.

Go back through the food court and dive into the electric eel pool. Swim
around and wait for the [ELECTRIC EELS] to shock the water - the voltage
should be strong enough to power up the battery but not strong enough to kill
you (just in case you're on a no-death run).

The tape recorder should now be up and running. Now any time you place it on
the ground, it will record. Picking it up will stop the recording, and putting
it on the ground will play back the recording. Back on your way through the
food court, drop the tape recorder next to the speaker to record the elevator
music, then bring it somewhere else and play the music back to you for the
"To Soothe A Savage Beast" Achievement.

Return to the Crystal Cave Monster and throw the tape recorder down next to
it. Now run into the monster and have it grab you and toss you back with your
friends. With the other two players still holding the levers, loop back around
and pick up the tape recorder, which should have recorded the monster's roar.

Carry the tape recorder to the food court and put it down near the [HOT DOG
MACHINE]. Play back the monster's roar to surprise the hunter and have her run
off. Grab a [HOT DOG] from the dispenser and return to the monster. Slowly
coax it onto the stone bridge, only to have the bridge crumble under the
weight and send the Crystal Monster tumbling.

Down the pit you go.

 The Missile Silo [0409]
==============================================================================
______________________________________________________________________________
[ With the Scientist ]--------------------------------------------------------

After falling down the pit after the monster and the hunter, the trio lands in
a pool of water. Get out and use the Scientist to hack the [DOOR CONTROL
CONSOLE] with Y. The door opens, and all three can go inside. Proceed past the
nuclear missile to reach a dead end. Hacking the [GROG MACHINE] reveals a top-
secret elevator.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
After riding down the secret elevator, follow the passage to the left and
you'll find a [CAVE PAINTING] during your travels.

When you reach the bottom of the missile silo, swim across the pool to the
exit door and remove the [FUSE] from the [FUSE BOX]. Bring it back across and
up the ladder, placing it in the [EMPTY FUSE BOX]. Load all three players on
the elevator, hit the [ELEVATOR CALL BUTTON], ride the elevator to the tippy
top, and enter the silo from here.

The command center contains three [KEYHOLES], which will help set off the
missile by placing three keys in each slot. Hack the [LOWER BLAST DOOR
CONSOLE] at the top of the ladder. Go back down the elevator to view the
missile firing up, then ride it back to the command center. The door to the
next room should be open.

In the following room, a guided laser beam will track you down if you step
foot inside. The [LASER CONTROL CONSOLE] will disarm the laser. This part can
be sort of tough, but here's what to do: enter the room to get the laser's
attention and slowly move back to the doorway. As the laser retreats back to
the center, make a mad dash for the console and begin hacking it; make sure to
enter the room as the laser is moving backwards so you have enough time to
hack the console.

The hacked laser will turn on the lab tech and fry him. Pick up the [LAUNCH
KEY] left behind and place it in one of the three keyholes in the previous
room. Hack the [ELEVATOR CONSOLE] and hit the [ELEVATOR CALL BUTTON] to ride
down alone.

On the first floor (the yellow wing), a security guard is blocking the hallway
to the right. To the left is a [WARHEAD LOADING CONSOLE], but a lab tech will
immediately fix your hack job and prevent loading the warhead. Drop down to
the second floor (the green wing) and then down to the third floor (the purple
wing).

  Cave Painting
  -------------
There is a [CAVE PAINTING] on the third floor (the purple wing), to the
right and underneath the four {CODE ENTRY BUTTONS].

Head to the left side of the purple wing to located a [WET FLOOR SIGN].
Interestingly, the Wet Floor Sign is actually a wet floor sign, not a floor
sign signifying a wet floor. Putting the Wet Floor Sign anywhere will cause
the floor to be slippery.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
This [CAVE PAINTING] is in the corner of the cafeteria, next to the ladder.

Carry the Wet Floor Sign to the yellow wing and place it between the lab tech
and the Warhead Loading Console. Hack the console, then watch the lab tech
fall on his bum as he tries to undo your mess. Take the [LAUNCH KEY] from his
corpse and place it in the second keyhole.

Place the Wet Floor Sign on the edge of the ledge and slip off the edge
yourself to unlock the "Hazardous Work Environment" Achievement.

Your next goal is to access the storage room down on the purple wing. You must
enter a four-digit code to unlock it. If you examine the [ADMINISTRATOR'S
TERMINAL] in the room to the right of the laser room, you will discover that
the code changes depending on the day of the week. You must determine what day
it is in order to figure out which code to input (trial and error does not
work here since the code changes for every unsuccessful attempt).

Go down to the cafeteria and look on the chalkboard to see the lunch special.
Now head to the green wing and read the [BULLETIN BOARD] in the break room;
figure out which day the lunch special corresponds to (it is random on every
playthrough).

Once you figure out what day it is, look at the Administrator's Terminal to
find the correct code. Make your way to the [CODE ENTRY BUTTONS] on the purple
wing and type in the code to open the door. Pick up the [KNOCKOUT GAS].

Position one of your characters next to the [HVAC CONTROL SWITCH] past the
Administrator's Terminal, and then carry the Knockout Gas into the break room.
Punch the HVAC Control Switch to revert the air flow, then drop the Knockout
Gas next to the vent. The gas should get sucked into the ventilation shaft and
end up knocking out the security guard. Take the final [LAUNCH KEY] from him
and insert it into the keyhole.

The final step in the missile launch is to insert the guidance system. The
"guidance system" being the imprisoned [CHIMP] where the security guard was.
The monkey is food-motivated, so you'll need to find some bananas in order to
persuade him.

Return to the cafeteria and rummage through the [FRUIT BOWL] until you find
[BANANAS]. Feed the chimp some bananas and move through the yellow wing and
down to the green wing; the chimp will (slowly, but surely) follow suit. Enter
the room in the left and the chimp will take care of the rest.

The missile is ready to launch, so now all you have to do is literally launch
the thing. Position each character in front of a keyhole in the command
center; turn the first launch key, then quickly cycle through the other two
characters and have them turn their respective keys. I thought killing one's
own parents was dark, but this takes things to a whole new level. Whoops.

The exit door next to the fuse box from before should now be open. Continue
through and follow the Cave Tour sign down the waterfall.

______________________________________________________________________________
[ Without the Scientist ]-----------------------------------------------------

If the Scientist is not in your party, the drop down from the zoo will be much
longer as you dive past the missile silo and down to the next region.

 The Temple [0410]
==============================================================================
______________________________________________________________________________
[ With the Monk ]-------------------------------------------------------------

At the bottom of the waterfall, the exit is blocked by an elegant [MASTER'S
GATE]. It is now up to the Monk to usurp the position of master from the
current holder. Just as an FYI, if you are carrying the postcard leave it down
at the Master's Gate. Swim back across the pool and read the [OLD SIGN] near
the bridge:

"To a mind at peace, the lightest of things can be the heaviest."

Ignore the bridge for the time being and begin the trek up the mountain to the
master's abode. Along the way, a rock wall will block your way, but using the
Monk's special ability to move the [SUPPORT BEAM] with his mind will get it
out of the way for you. As long as you hold down Y, the Monk can use his
telekinetic powers to move certain out-of-reach objects.

Use telekinesis on the [WIND CHIMES] to get the master's attention. You must
complete the four trials of Zen-ness in order to achieve enlightenment and
attain the power the Monk so desires. Grab the [FEATHER] out of the air with
telekinesis and return to the base of the mountain.

The bridge can support all three characters, but adding the secret ingredient
(the feather) will cause it to crumble beneath you. Pick the feather back up
as one of the other two characters and lead all three down the hallway. Pull
the stone idol head under where the bridge used to be so you can climb back
out if need be. The second trial is through the tunnel and up the stairs; read
the sign at the top:

"Impatient thoughts are as petals scattered to the winds."

The second trial requires you to carry [LOTUS BLOSSOMS] through a wind tunnel.
(grab them using telekinesis). You must move slowly and carefully down the
passage to prevent dispersing the lotus blossoms; the petals will scatter if
you move too fast or if you let the wind carry them away. The lotus blossoms
will reappear at the start if you mess up.

Pay attention to the wind chimes on the ceiling to forecast when the next gust
of wind is going to arrive. In order to keep the lotus blossoms stable, turn
your back when the winds blow through. As the sign hints, you must be patient
and take things slow. Once you finally reach the other side of the hallway,
close the [WINDOW] using telekinesis and put the lotus blossoms on the
[BLOSSOM PEDESTAL]. Voila!

"An ordered mind seeks equilibrium in all things. A sloppy mind just uses
  the internet: http://monkpuzzle.com/"

Yes, the website actually works and it actually provides the answer to the
third trial of Zen-ness. Granted, my guide does too, so you should probably
stay right here. ;)

The third trial requires you to balance out the monkey scale using a [4 GALLON
JUG] and a [7 GALLON JUG]. You must use these two jugs to get 6 gallons of
water in order to balance out the [6 GALLON JUG] resting on the scale. You can
fill up the jugs at the [POOL OF WATER] and you can pour out water down the
[DRAINAGE GRATE].

First, take the [EMPTY 7 GALLON JUG] and fill it up, then pour it into the
[EMPTY 4 GALLON JUG]. You should now have 4 gallons of water and 3 gallons of
water left over in the bigger jug. Now dump out the 4 Gallon Jug and pour the
remaining water into this one. You should now have 3 gallons of water inside
the 4 Gallon Jug.

Fill up the 7 Gallon Jug. By pouring water into the 4 Gallon Jug (which has 3
gallons of water), the 7 Gallon Jug ends up containing 6 gallons of water.
There you have it! Now place [6 GALLONS OF WATER] on the [SCALE PEDESTAL] to
even things out and activate the elevator. Only one more trial awaits you.

"The path to enlightenment is a journey of peace and stillness of the mind."

  Cave Painting
  -------------
There is a [CAVE PAINTING] in plain sight atop the elevator after completing
  the third trial of Zen-ness.

Have everyone reconvene at the top of the elevator (bring the feather along
as well). Have each character stand on a mat as they whisk you in the air and
carry you to the top of the room. Along the way, each character will pass by
an [OBJECT OF DESIRE], but you must resist temptations and leave them be while
you ride to the top.

You should make one pit stop near the top of the room and have everyone get
off at the rope on the right. Climb up the rope and stand on the bridge with
the feather. The bridge should break just like the first one; you drop into
the pool of water from the third trial and come away with the "Embrace
Impermanence" Achievement.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
There's also a [CAVE PAINTING] found on the second bridge during the fourth
  trial of Zen-ness.

The trick to completing the fourth trial is to not move a muscle once the
mats start moving. The Old Sign preaches stillness of the mind, but stillness
of the body is just as important. If no one moves on the mats and ignores
their Objects of Desire, a rope appears on the ceiling that you can use to
escape; otherwise the mats disappear and you plummet back to the ground.

All four trials are now complete, but you still aren't out of the woods just
yet. Climb up the tall ladder and check out the Old Sign:

"Only in meditation does one gain the fullest view of the world."

As the Monk, interact with the [MEDITATION STATUES] until the camera zooms out
significantly. The increased range should now allow you to see outside the
temple - move towards the left wall to spot a [SUPPORT BOLT] outside. Keep
using telekinesis to unscrew the bolt until it eventually falls out entirely.

Now move to the right to see a [SUPPORT BEAM] on the other side of the wall.
Move it by pressing Y, then slide back down the ladder. A rock has been
dislodged to the right, which can be used to reach the dangling rope. Pull
yourself up to the temple exit.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
The next [CAVE PAINTING] is found near the temple exit, after the fourth
  trial of Zen-ness.

Return to your master at the mountain's peak. The perch can no longer support
his weight, so interact with the wind chimes to get your master's attention
and...

Well there you have it. Now that the Monk is the new Zen master, you can open
up the Master's Gate at the bottom of the mountain and enter the island.

______________________________________________________________________________
[ Without the Monk ]----------------------------------------------------------

If the Monk is not in your party, the Master's Gate will already be open and
you can walk through to the island.

______________________________________________________________________________
==============================================================================
 The Island [0411]
==============================================================================

  Cave Painting
  -------------
As soon as you pass through the [MASTER'S GATE], the [CAVE PAINTING] will be
waiting for you on the other side.

Stroll down the beach and push the rickety boat in the water. Load everyone in
and sail off to the island. Your crash landing attracts the attention of an
old hermit in search for a way off. As he runs off to pack his things, jump
off the boat and climb the ladder.

Walk up the hill past the annoying parrot and get the [STRAIGHT PIPE]. Bring
everyone up the hill to the hermit's camp, and have a second character take
the [CROSS PIPE].

  Cave Painting
  -------------
The next [CAVE PAINTING] is located at the hermit's camp, on the platform
  next to the [CROSS PIPE].

Push the blue box into the ditch and use it to continue across the island. If
you're carrying the postcard through The Cave, you're best off leaving it here
on the opposite end of the island so as you don't have your hands full during
the completion of the island's puzzles.

There is a second blue box on the beach that should be pushed into the cave
entrance on the left. There is a [BOX OF CRACKERS] and a [CAN OF CORN] next to
the box; leave them there for the time being and use the box to enter the
cave.

Place the Straight Pipe into the [PIPE SOCKET] and continue past the active
[WATER VALVE] and hot air balloon. Bring the Cross Pipe into the cave and go
to the left, jumping on the wooden bridge and climbing the rope to the
appropriate [PIPE SOCKET]. Put the Cross Pipe in place and climb the ladder to
find an [L SHAPED PIPE].

  Cave Painting
  -------------
The [CAVE PAINTING] is directly next to the [L SHAPED PIPE] in the upper
  alcove.

Grab the L-Shaped Pipe and jump to the other side of the rope. Follow the
trail, passing by a ladder, until you reach a third [PIPE SOCKET]. Insert the
pipe into the socket and climb down the ladder to the pipe's [WATER VALVE].
Turn the valve to raise the water level.

Swim across the pool to the beach and grab your boat. Push it across the beach
and now into the pool to the other end; now head past the parrot and stand at
the [PIRATE FLAG] while you use another character to pull the boat onto dry
land.

Back near the hot air balloon and the rope, look to the left to find a giant
metal dam. Slide down the ladder here and go down the tunnel (note the grate
on the floor and the weakened portion of the ceiling). Stand at the [PIRATE
FLAG]. Now take the third player and bring them to the surface, placing them
at the third [PIRATE FLAG] near the hermit's camp. Have all three players pull
the Pirate Flags to open the pirate door underneath the dam.

Beyond the pirate door is a chute deploying an unlimited amount of powder
kegs, three at a time. You must use these powder kegs to destroy the ceiling
above the grate and drain the dam. However, the range of the kegs aren't very
good and you must use all three to create a chain reaction of sorts.

Before you tinker around with this specific puzzle, return to the Can of Corn
and use the keg to blow it to smithereens. Assuming you destroyed the first
one back in the mine, you'll receive the "Creamed Corn" Achievement. Also,
don't forget to remove the [FEMUR] from the pirate captain's skeleton.

  Cave Painting
  -------------
If you have the Adventurer in your party, you can use her special ability to
grapple across a lava pit to the right of the powder kegs and find a [CAVE
PAINTING]. It's only active if she is in your party.

Roll the first powder keg back towards the ladder. To ignite the powder keg,
roll it up the slope towards the lava pool; the heat from the magma will light
the fuse and you can push the keg down the hill. Unfortunately, the keg does
not roll very far and stops just to the left of the ladder. See the pile of
four small rocks in the background? The keg stops right around there.

Here's what you have to do. Roll the first powder keg out of your way. Take
the second keg and place it between the rock pile and the grate. Next, place
the third one on top of the grate. Now when you light the first keg and roll
it down the hill, the ensuing explosion should create a chain reaction and
blast the other two, ultimately blowing a hole in the ceiling and draining the
water out.

Now begin pushing the boat through the cave. When you reach the empty dam,
dump the boat in and jump down after it. Pull the [LEVER] to open the dam and
move the boat onto the hot air balloon. Hop in and use a second character to
turn the [WATER VALVE] next to the balloon.

Water + lava = steam, and the steam carries the balloon up the shaft and to
the surface. Keep the balloon afloat and use the first character to push the
boat off and down to the east beach.

The hermit learns of your success and makes himself cozy in the front of the
boat. Since the boat only seats three, you have to find a way to get rid of
the old party crasher.

Grab the box of crackers and bring them to the [PARROT] at the other end of
the island. Press X in the vicinity of the parrot to have him perch on your
shoulder. With the parrot on board, make sure to avoid any water and do not
die, or else he'll return to his perch and you will have to feed him again.

Walk the parrot to the hermit's camp and find [SPANKY], the hermit's trusty
dog. Take control of whoever is holding the femur and bring it to the camp,
then hand it over to the parrot's caretaker. Shake the femur in front of
Spanky and the parrot will begin mimicking the dog's excited barks.

With the parrot barking nonstop, carefully move to the boat and the hermit
will hear the barks and forget that he left poor Spanky behind! As he runs off
to his campsite, get all three characters in the boat (make sure to pick the
postcard up again!) to abandon the old coot.

 The Exit [0412]
==============================================================================

The three spelunkers somehow ride the boat through the ocean and down to the
gift shop entrance. Putting the [POSTCARD] back on the [POSTCARD DISPLAY] will
net you the "Remorse" Achievement. The clerk sends you on another trinket-
hoarding quest, and this is pretty much identical to the beginning of the
game. Take the [NOVELTY-SIZED KEY] and unlock the ["EMPLOYEES ONLY" DOOR].

This should all look very familiar to you. Continue through The Cave, past
where you capture the Crystal Monster, to a lava field that used to be filled
with blue water. Jump down to the lower ledge and grab a [GOLD NUGGET], the
first trinket.

Continue to the right and dive into the water, emerging to find a [MONSTER
TROPHY] on the other side. Take the upper passage and run all the way to the
[ELEVATOR CALL BUTTON]; first use the third character to climb the nearby
ladder and collect [SPANKY]. With all three trinkets, return to the gift shop.

This is the end of your journey, and you have one of two options: you can go
for the good ending or the bad ending. After handing over the trinket, the
gift shop clerk gives the character the [OBJECT OF DESIRE].

  Bad Ending
  ----------
If you choose to keep this and leave The Cave, you will receive the bad
ending. You unlock the "Corruption" Achievement by seeing every character's
  bad ending.

  Good Ending
  -----------
Press X until you return the object to the gift shop clerk. If you leave
empty-handed, you will receive the good ending. You unlock the "Redemption"
Achievement by seeing every character's good ending.

In addition to the Cave Paintings found throughout the game, you unlock two
new ones depending on which path you take. If you want to reveal everything
you can about the characters and get the "The Whole Story" Achievement, you
must view the bad ending and good ending for all 7 characters. You're looking
at a whole lot of playthroughs in order to unlock everything The Cave has to
offer!
