"Gears of War...Too much hype for it's own good??"

(note: this review is on the single-player mode only)

Is it just me or is this the type of game that would have seemed INCREDIBLE 2 years ago on maybe the original X-Box...
Sure by all means it's a good game...
Wait, let me rephrase that. Sure by all means it's a good LOOKING game but the gameplay...well doesn't it seem to leave a bitter taste in your mouth at times?

Graphics: Okay, here's the thing...the graphics are incredible. SD-TV, HD-TV it doesn't really matter. The graphics are incredible for a game so early into the X-Box 360's shelf life when many developers are still learning the in's and out's of the system. But unfortunatly it seems (to me at least) that the developers put too much time into the graphics and not enough into other aspects (ie. story) of the game. For such a graphical orgasm you think a game like this would have a story to back it up...well it has a story...well I think it has a story...well let's just say there's lots of gaps to fill in that are...uh...never quite filled...

Story: Okay, so you're in prison and busted out right in the beginning. Why are you in prison? Cuase you were a traitor...apparently...for all you know you could have gone to prison because you went on a circus rampage killing clown's and tightrope walkers. Case in point: the game never really says why you were in prison...well I guess it just leaves the story up in the air for more speculation...or for more WTF?! moments...or for more...well forget it...

Sound: Once again, along with the graphics another strong point. Everything sounds real...everything sounds like it hurts real badly! From the sound your armor makes as it slams into the wall tot he bullets bouncing off objects all around you...everything sounds as it should...which is good...

Gameplay: Okay, you want simplified? Gears of War gives you simplified. I swear give the game to a newborn child and just have them repeatedly tap the "A" button and eventually they will get through the game. Gears of War is perhaps too simplified. I mean the "A" button does an estimation of 80+% of Marcus' moves. Is that a good thing? Sure, if you have no gaming skill...sure if you want everything to be done for you...sure if you're...um...simplified? Needless to say the only time you stray off the "A" button is usually for three reasons: 1) To shoot 2) To aim 3) To reload. Now I bet people are asking "What about the chainsaw?!?! VROOOOOOOMMMMMM!!! (or whatever noise a chainsaw makes...)". Truth be told it's more practical to use guns. If you're close enough to use a chainsaw in the SP mode...you're most likely good as dead to start out with. Stand back and use your guns as the chainsaw's just there to look pretty and not much else. In terms of variety, sure they have the odd gun you haven't seen before in any game...but big whoop? I want gameplay variety not weapon variety. If 90% of the game consists of running to cover, peeking out from cover, shooting things til they die, running out from cover, reaching next cover point and so on and so on...well let's just say it gets old real quick. I honestly don't even think it took me more than 20 minutes to stare at the screen and have a serious feeling of deja-vu. Let's also just say that the initial deja-vu feeling...doesn't go away until you turn the game off and go play something else.

Final Verdict: Rent or Buy? Well it is Gears of War. Next to Halo 2 it is probably more hyped than God. If you don't have the game by now...well you're one of the few as everyone (myself included) fell for the "CRAZY HYPE" surrounding what appeared to be a game that'll change the future of console gaming. Well it changed something all right...for me it changed the fact that I'll never fall for the hype of a game again. While I do like Gears of War, if I had to go and do it all over again I would probably buy (because of no shortage of monetary income), though if you are lacking in incoming funds...I'd buy first, just my own two cents though. All in all, it's a good game that could have been great. Look around on the internet and read apparent professional reviews. Rating this game a 9.6 (Gamespot) or even anything about a 9 is absolutely ridiculous and you can tell that the hype worked. Unfortunately the hype worked...
