"When there is no room in hell, the Dead Rising will dominate the 360"
Dead Rising is the newest game for the Xbox 360 from fan favorite developer, Capcom. No stranger to zombie epic games, what Capcom as done is instead of creating another survival horror game with the same play mechanics, they have decided to create a game that using old school brawler game play with next generation graphics. Have they succeeded?
This game is one of the first games in recent months that I haven't been able to put down since I purchased it. Every system has one of these game, be it Zelda or Mario. However, those are established franchises. This game sets up what could be the next great franchise from Capcom.
The story is about a zombie outbreak in a small mountain town. Sound familiar? It should, since almost every horror related title starts with a similar beginning. However, what sets this apart from other games is that the lead antagonist, Frank West, isn't a Special Forces member or father looking for his lost daughter. He is just a photojournalist who is out for himself. A unique element of this game is that the story can end at anytime if you miss key story elements. You can still play the game, but finding out the reason for the outbreak will be lost to you.
This game screams next generation graphics. Over 1000 a zombie moving around independently of each other is something that couldn't be done on ps2, Xbox, or Gamecube. Every texture has a lifelike quality that draws you into the game. From the facial expressions (you can see wrinkles, crow's feet and other signs of age) to actually seeing pours on the skin, this is a great looking game. A true sign of this games impressive graphics is that while watching the game's cut scenes, my brother thought I was watching Dawn of the Dead. The water looks great, the grass looks like it needs to be cut again, very lifelike.
The game's sound brings you into the adventure. You actually feel like you're in a mall with mall announcements giving you information about which stores are selling which. During cut scenes, the sound changes from mall music to standard horror music. The character voice actors do their job well while it isn't perfect; it's much better and above B voice acting stuff.
Everything in this mall can be a used against enemies. During your missions, you will find guns, swords, pies you name it, and it is in this game. You can use severed body parts against zombies. Even non lethal items can be used. You can grab a soda can and throw them at zombies. You can grab buckets and place them on the zombie's heads. It is truly an open world. If you want to use melee attacks, you can do so. You want to use guns, the game adapts to it. You can play the main game straight, or you can do numerous side missions to flesh out the overall experience.
Lasting Appeal: 8/10
Even when you finish this game, there are still tons to unlock. You can carry over your previous save experience (fully upgraded character) which makes the game a little easier but much more fun. Alternate costumes and Xbox live achievements make this game new and fresh each time. There are some problems, mainly the small text (you can barely read what the characters are saying) and the horrible save system (you cannot save to new files, you have to over write you older game) but nothing that ruins the experience.
Don't miss this game. If this is any indication of where Capcom is going with the 360, we are in for one hell of a ride.
