Though not clearly on the explanation, I will give each possible way to "exit" the game:
1. If you are in the past and want to "exit" the Animus, just pause then select "Leaving Animus" or something, then you will be back in the present with two people been busy on their attention.
2. If you wish to quit the game, just pause anytime to exit the game.
3. If you wanna leave the game, be sure to save your process before do this; simple push Home Button (the large green X on the silver button) then select "Return to Dashboard".
