"Repetitive, Yet Somehow Fun"
So, after the prince of persia series ran out of steam last gen, ubisoft decided to start a new series before relaunching prince of persia: assassin's creed. This game is very ambitious with what it tries to do, but falls short of greatness due to a few flaws.
Graphic and sound 8/10
It's pretty to look at. Being that you spend much of your time travelling throughout the land, there is great attention to detail.
This shows what a next gen game can do that is better than last gen. Backgrounds are lush and realistic looking. The characters look amazingly lifelike.
The sound effects also sound great. The horses galloping and swords clashing really bring you into the game more.
The story is actually pretty interesting. You play as two different characters: one lives in the present, the other is his ancient ancestor.
Your present day ego is being held captive by strange scientists. They are interested in one of your ancestor's life, he was an assassin in the assassin's guild. You go from playing as the assassin and...assassinating people, to playing short segments as the present day character.
It gets pretty cool later on but I won't spoil it. It keeps you interested but isn't the best story ever.
The game was definitely fun. The missions start out where you have assassinate different people using some really cool methods. But, then you do it again. And again, and again until the game ends.
The controls are pretty different from most other games. You have two different modes of play. One is stealth, where you blend in with the crowd, walk slowly and your only attack is to use a concealed short sword.
When you need to flee from guards or fight them, you enter combat mode. This let's you run, jump and use your regular sword.
The assassin is very agile, and uses parkour to jump from rooftop to rooftop to get around quickly. If you are spotted, it is often better to run than fight, like metal gear.
Much of the time, though, you will be forced to fight and will have to use the difficult fighting system. Much like prince of persia, you will have to use a combination of slashes and parries to beat your foes. You will often be surrounded by 3 or more foes, which can get pretty hard.
All in all, the game is really fun the first 4 missions or so. But it keeps dragging on until you just wish it were over. If ubisoft addresses this and adds some more variety, assassin's creed 2 could be one of the best games this gen.
Why anyone would want to beat this more than once is beyond me. You beat it to see the ending and for that sense of accomplishment when it's finally over. Other than that, just move on to prince of persia until assassin's creed 2 comes out.
Despite it's repetitive nature, assassin's creed is still fun to play. Since it's been out for a while, you can pick it up pretty cheap.
While this game wasn't all that great, future installments hold a lot of promise. Here's hoping assassin's creed 2 won't be assassin's creed 1.5.
